In today’s interesting medical case, I start with a hypothetical presentation of a “friend” with Borderline Personality Disorder. After discussing the symptoms, we’ll explore what causes BPD and the available treatments. Please don’t self-Diagnose yourself or a friend with BPD. Understand the Disorder, so you can help your loved ones suffering with this Disorder.
Topics:
a) Symptoms of BPD: see if You or your friend have symptoms of BPD?
b) What causes the disorder: Not only serotonin but also genetics and environmental factors matter.
c) Treatments: Drugs are not useful. Psychotherapy is the current best treatment. What is STEPPS?

I have BPD and I need to say this. We are people like others but we don't have "emotional skin" that protecting other people. We need support and I know its difficult with us. But also we are very loving and we can help others. We just cant help our selfs. We fight with our selfs every day. Me personally I wish to be normal but hard trauma from my childhood make me this way. Be happy for your normal life someone would give everything for life you have. Support others when they needs you.

A very mature and self-reflective comment. I want to let you know that from the outside looking in I DO see how empathetic and deeply hurt people with this disorder really can be. My main advice is to work very hard to reinterpret and question your reactins and thoughts about rejection, because this is the core misunderstanding I see BPD people make. Us setting healthy bounderies is misinterpreted as us "rejecting" the person with BPD. This is NOT THE CASE! :) Bounderies are not rejections, it just means we have personal limits and values that we must hold to preserve a healthy selse of self. It does not mean we don't care, respect or value you guys. We set bounderies among each other all the time. Maybe we ask a very personal question, and the other replies "Don't ask me that, please". Or maybe we ask a favour and the other says "I'm not comfortable doing that", or we scroll through someones private chat when the other just meant to show us 1 picture from it, and they say "don't read the entire thing!". Things like that happen. It does not mean they don't want to connect, don't respect you, or talk shit about us in their private chat. So, my outsider tip is to work on (with a therapist or alone) critically examining your reactions to bounderies, by asking yourself "am I sure they don't like me?", "maybe they said no because they didn't have time?" And "can I think of examples where they expressed they liked me?".

@@fromeveryting29 I work with my therapist almost 3 years and I need to say it helps a lot. I need to say that I'm learning psychology and reading a lots of books about BPD. My living with BPD make it actually even more interesting and difficult as well. :D Thing that helped a lot is STOP rule (stop your actions, take step back, calm yourself and think about facts about the situation and then make decision). I'm still trying to understand the deference between BPD and "normal" people. I have friends from my hospitalisation in psychiatric hospital they also have BPD. Also I have "normal" people around me (sorry for saying "normal people" I'm not native speaker) And It's interesting for me see the small differences between them. And I agree boundaries are not rejections. I would say everyone has them and they are here to help us and also makes us safe. And thanks for saying mature and self-reflective comment :D actually I'm only 25 and still learning about how world works :D

@@JreamNova Hi I can say that people with BPD have problems with friendship and interaction with people. I was recently diagnosed with trauma-related disorder. But every counselor I speak to has skirted around BPD with me. I may have to ask straight-up to be assessed for it. The major thing for me is that unstable sense of identity, constantly seeking what and how other people think I am, so I can have some direction in life; it’s so difficult for me to be able to work inward out.

Ok I can relate to that BPD is not taken seriously. I believe it's the worst mental illness of the lot. The suicide rate to this disorder is so sad. Amber Heard is claimed to have this. I disagree personally. We don't manipulate, attention seek. We get the bunny boiling comments, however we are people who at times feel dead behind our eyes. Warrior's that mask our pain.

@@roseduffy3136 Amber the C*nt does not have BPD. She has Antisocial PD. Whether psycho- or socio-path, I couldn't tell you as I don't have enough information to go on. This sounds harsh, but don't bother trying to get an answer out of them. For therapists, we are the hardest challenge they could face, because we are *egosyntonic.* I don't see BPD as an illness I suffer from; rather I AM a borderline. I'm not proud of it, per se... but taking ownership gives me a kind of pleasure. And psychiatrists dgaf because there's no official medication procedure for it.

BPD is not a mood disorder, it's a personality disorder more closely related to antisocial personality disorder than depression. This is an important distinction, since while many mood disorders like clinical depression and anxiety disorders can be effectively treated with medications, borderline personality disorder cannot be treated with medications (although it can help with symptom management).
@Tawroset
@Tawroset 9 месяцев назад
It is not "closely related" to ASPD. These are two different diagnoses.
@sophiafern
@sophiafern 9 месяцев назад
@@Tawroset BPD and ASPD are both Cluster B personality disorders. In contrast mood disorders, like bipolar, GAD, and major depressive disorders are classified entirely differently to personality disorders. Of course ASPD and BPD are not the same, but they are much more closely related to each other than they are to say depression. The literature on BPD is quickly evolving though, and amid calls to rename it I would not be surprised if BPD (or EUPD as it's called sometimes) ends up in a different cluster.

Just so you know, as I have never seen this included in a video, I have epilepsy. Epilepsy makes it much more likely you will get BPD because both involve the same neurotransmitter; serotonin. I also have a family history of it and had an extremely abusive mother and an alcoholic father. However, I'm doing much better now without therapy or medications. Some of my epileptic meds are crossover medications for mental illness and may be helping, but I learned on my own to get a lot of symtoms under control. The worst I still deal with is fear of abandonment because of the accumulation of traumatic relationship breaks I've had. I was diagnosed with minor PTSD over these traumas. However, don't think there is no hope. The more I grow the more I understand and learn to control my BPD.

I am more learning about BPD. I was on the verge of being diagnosed by my mental health professional while serving in the military. I say on the verge because she wanted to work with me a little more to differentiate between BPD and potentially something else. So they put eccentric personality in my "current diagnosis" as a placeholder. I saw an opportunity and then bailed on therapy altogether.

Can this be caused by trauma. When I was 11 my mum killed herself infront of me and all the attention went to the older children and I was ignored. A year later my dad said no wonder she killed herself dealing with you. I was then groomed at 14 and the police made me feel like a prosititue and my family threw me in my room and never let me speak about it. My sister's 40 year old boyfriend then entered the family and sexually assaulted me at 16 to 18 and I was open with it and told them and their response was you're toxic. I learned to shut it all in and I now struggle with occasional self harm and when I get angry I hit myself in the face. My feelings of suicide have gone from scared to a comftable feeling. Every day I don't know if I'm going to wake up happy or numb or depressed angry. It's exhausting and I don't know how to even be diagnosed since I'm terrified no one will listen like my family.

I had some symptoms of this but don't know why the last few months i am extremely suffering high mood swings. i get triggered by a very small thing.i feel some weird emptiness in me like something is missing but don't know what. i am absolutely normal now then burst with anger, suddenly happy but the most strange thing is i really don't know why it's happening. i have no control of myself. not only that my thinking pattern is also changing so quickly. i love my mother the most but sometimes i can't even tolerate her. i yelled at her and feel so bad after sometime. i can't understand myself. i am not the same person all the time like others. i am really confused. but i told my mother about my problem but she never takes it seriously. i cried so many times and told her mom i don't know what is happening to me please help me. BUT she just tells me it is happening because of my age or its just became my nature or habit and you have try to solve this. Then i get really angry why she always kept telling me that i don't. i try but can't do it and it's happening repeatedly. they just irriated and yelled at me and that's it. sometimes i feel shameless to try to tell my mom everytime so i stop it. i know she loves me a lot and i also love her but she is not helping me. SO I STARTED to searh at google and youtube. but i don't think its so helpful cause i should meet a doctor but my mother is not willing to do that. so i decided to go by my own atleast i will be able to know what actually happen to me. i try to understand myself and be a better person. I might have BPD but I'm gonna go to the doctors and sort it out this year. I'm so unstable and an emotional wreck I need proper tests and need to find out what is wrong with me. I get so attached to people and I'm so scared of losing friends. I engage in destructive behavior like smoking weed to cope and doing recreational drugs and sitting and isolating and not going out. I've had some problems with friends recently and my girlfriend because how much i seek there approval and attention. I have self harmed never nothing crazy (I have cut but more so scraped my skin, punched a few walls.) I tend to cause strain to my head and just burst into fits of rage out of no where, My biggest fear is having no one but also like I have to do what my friends want to get approval, and i feel like they're talking about me and making fun of me behind my back and think I'm psycho. I don't hallucinate maybe i have? Like sometimes think i see things out of the corner of my eyes and have seen like figures before out of no where like making me feel like ism seeing a ghost? my recent experience with MDMA caused a lot of hallucinations though after smoking weed at the end of the trip (Alot of these symptoms were present before i started doing recreational drugs) as a child i've always felt like something is off with me. Think this year I'll try take action.

@Queerlien
@Queerlien 3 года назад
@@eversunnyguy I will say as someone with BPD, I do feel like relationships are a big factor in how I am reacting, especially considering I have a lot of trauma where I was beat into learning to people please. It does make it really difficult, because my attention is always constantly on the other person and making sure their needs are satisfied. I do my best in solitude when I can have space for myself to really be able to get into a better perspective and see how I am reacting. But! That doesn't mean all the symptoms go away, I wish that were true!!! I still have severe emotional dyregulation without a partner or friend around, in fact it can get worse and I am more likely to melt down without support. When I am left on my own, I am way more impulsive since I am bored and feeling numb or empty, another common symptom. Sometimes I will disassociate more severely as well. There are loads of symptoms that have nothing to do with a relationship, the barest amount of research or even just rewatching this video would show you that. I'm not sure if you are genuinely curious or maybe if you've had a partner with BPD, or maybe you have it yourself, but I can assure you, BPD is something underlying in a person and is not being caused by relationships. I think relationships just may trigger out more reactions and emotions based off their history/trauma or just Rejection Sensitive Disorder in general, which is another common symptom in BPD. That being said if you want me to expand I can try but I hope I helped you understand a bit more.

when I was in 9th grade I had a friend, a very close friend she was the first friend to ever gotten that close to me. One day or moment, i dont remember how but I just suddenly distnce my self around her, I feel like I am suffocated when I am around her and I need to ignore her, that goes on for month until she confronted me. I don't realize that I am ignoring her because in my mind at those moment that I am ignoring her, I were thinking that it is all normal. We get back together but now she understands when I distance myself. That happened again in my senior year, i got close to this person, I ignore her for the reason that I feel too close to her and I feel like I don't like it. It always happens, same with the guy I got to talk to. many relationship got wrecked because I can't keep anyone too close to me. I do it consciously but uncontrollable.

Just want to correct, BPD specifically, or Bipolar Personality Disorder, is a Personality disorder, it's in the name! However, Bipolar Disorder, which you even reference at the end, is a mood disorder. It would be nice if this was clarified and both disorders were compared and discussed. Lovely video otherwise, thank you!
@Queerlien
@Queerlien 3 года назад
For those unaware, Bipolar Personality Disorder impacts your entire personality and often causes mood swings to happen within mere hours. From what I know with Bipolar Mood Disorder, your moods may last days, weeks, sometimes months. Bipolar Disorder is more well known for the days upon days of mania or depression, whereas BPD is much more known for the frequent switches in personality and instability in emotions. I have BPD and it is a Rollercoaster 😅

Absolutely. U need to talk to a psychiatrist to get diagnosed though. Fears of abandonment go harder at times though. Pushing people out of your life as you feel is a safety measure out of fear can damage every relationship you’ve ever had. I would threaten my life all the time. Times got really hard for my family because my mom could never find a good man. I was going back and forth with my neglectful dads and I would have to constantly sneak food because I was starved so often. My mom grounded me for a year one time and I had the worst and the best times ever. I never saw people. But I got loved at school because all they saw was what I put on. My mom was emotionally unstable and her men would treat me like literal garbage. I was told at a young age that I was a really hard kid to love. I believed it so much, that now I know, life is meant for a short time. Not a long one. BPD is something I’ve struggled with immensely. I get paranoid by many many things and I’d rather be alone to talk with myself and my rocks than make and form an unworthy relationship that I can fulfill by myself. But it’s a battle too because I want all the love. At the end of the day… my inner child is still not wanting anyone to disappoint me again because I know they’ll just leave.
