In this video I dive into the topic of what is bright indirect light in more detail and explain my own little 'hack' to getting the lighting right for my plants everytime
This can apply to both natural lighting and LED grow lights.

On the topic of light - unless one wants a particular result (e.g. change the season of plants blossoming), one seems to really need full spectrum light to grow healthy plants, acc. to the research presented in the book "What a Plant Knows" by the biologist Daniel Chamovitz. I find the book truly fascinating because it describes the senses of plants based on research, and for example explains how the plants perceive light, what the blue, short-red and long-red light does etc.

I use Lux over foot candles quite successfully, fwiw. The other thing I wish to add to this ….. because we need to add more complexity …. is your eyes can be quickly deceived. Our eyes adjust to the light we are in. So what you think must be low/bright light, is often is proven otherwise when it comes to taking a light reading. When you start to measure light levels in your home, you’re going to be quite surprised at the results. That is often caused by you thinking it’s bright, when in fact, your eyes have adjusted to the conditions. Lastly, I picked up a replacement light meter on Amazon around a year ago for ~ $60.00. I am in Australia so it maybe different to what others can get, but at least in my area, they’re around. Great video, Memo. It’s not easy to unpack the light topic, but you did a good job 👍🏼🌿💚

Yes definately need to consider Lux it seems 😊 💯 Agree that our eyes can deceive us when it comes to brightness. Ohhh that is a very good price, it might be time to check out if I can get a light meter here for an affordable price too 👀👀👀

Only a guy from the britain archipelago will consider foot candle better than lux. Joke aside, it measure the same thing, 1lux=0.0929fc. One is in the metric system and can be used easilly for calculus, the other is from some weird system and you need to convert to lux for calculus. For just a measure it's the same thing.

Ahhhh did not know that, I just read a scientists that look into light levels and they all preferred Foot Candles, but now you mention it, they may have all been British 🤔🤔🤔😅😅😅😅

I wouldn’t be putting low light plants from inside where I live in Victoria Australia in the summer. They would be scorched alive! Yes, it's muggy heat wise here but we're a state where bushfires are highly prevalent and summer can become VERY dry on occasion. Even spring is still frosty so it's not something you can do UNLESS your absolutely sure you have shade and enough humidity outside otherwise.... nope 🤣

I’m also from Victoria Australia and I absolutely agree with this statement ! That said the one exception I’ve had is dracena (snake) plants, formerly known as sansiveria. I’ve acclimated mine to a full sun position in the summer months and she thrives. She’s gotten so huge in 3 years, I never imagined she’d get so large so quickly.

@@RareRootsOfJoyMelbourne i live more towards the country/beach direction from Melbourne and right now we've had winds that have torn fences and pretty much everything else down. We'll have this sadly until December so unless you got heavy rocks or cement in those planters you might as well kiss your house plants goodbye if left out side 🤣

@@meikahidenori I’m currently in the inner west - on the beach. So I feel you. All my outdoor plants are still tied to the fences. I had to bring in a lot of them in advance. My first 18 years was spent growing up in Safety Beach so I know your area well. Gorgeous place I hope to return to one day 💚

@@RareRootsOfJoyMelbourne I'm sort of newer to the area. I used to live at the base of Mt Dandenong so fires were more of a risk to plants than anything else. at least the wind won't wipe out my entire collection 😅
