Bronchiectasis is a lung disease in which enlarged airways are thickened and/or scarred. This can lead to mucus building up in the lungs. When mucus is not able to be cleared from the lungs, this may lead to infections, which in turn causes more lung damage. Join me this week as I discuss the medical condition bronchiectasis. #lifewithavent #bronchiectasis

Sometimes it’s hard to believe that humans, or for that matter anything alive that breathes, can even exist in the world. All the best to Barbara.

Please tell me, if you swallow the coughed up sputum, do not spit it out, then there is no significant harm from it?
@LifewithaVent

The stomach is highly acidic. It should be able to kill most bacteria in the sputum. However, if you are sick with a respiratory infection, the sputum should be spit out because the sputum contains high levels of bacteria.

@@LifewithaVentYes, that's good. Indeed, bacteria are unlikely to re-infect. But if sputum is always swallowed in chronic bronchitis, then it does not happen that regular ingestion can cause intoxication?
