As an addiction professional, I often get asked, what is Buprenorphine? Well, Buprenorphine is a synthetic Opiate that was created as a powerful pain reliever.
Please subscribe and help my vision of helping inspire many! / @drbaddictionrecovery
Recover from addiction by calling me: (800) 779-4715
Or visit: american-addic...
After the creation of Buprenorphine, we soon found out that it can be a powerful tool to help overcome Heroin and other opiate addictions.
There are two types of Opiates out there, a Full agonist, such as Heroin or Oxycontin. You body reacts the same way to these and the drug locks into the Opiate receptors creating the Opiate effect.
The other is an agonist-antagonist, which Buprenorphine falls into. What this means is that it blocks the Opiate receptors so you do not feel the effects of Heroin after you take Buprenorphine.
Brands of Buprenorphine are: Belbuca, Probuphine, Butrans, and Buprenex

Now I see how I ended up here using this patch. I got sucked into pain management, got prescribed narcotics, eventually got hooked and now I’m using this “AMAZING” drug. 🥺 to give it credit though, my life is back together. I will never get addicted to narcotics again.

Dr b, i 've researched the internet for literally hundreds of hours, asked my gp & pain specialist for a simple pragmatic answer to what buprenorphines function is & what exactly it does.. to no avail, you casually answered all subsiquent questions in less than 15min's, priceless, thankyou Dr b. I wish we had a doctor like you here in Georgia with your knowledge. I was one of those escalating pain patients, which in fact put me in a box of undesirables. Now after some unfortunate events and a favor from a coworker I found Suboxone. It has changed my life so much that I never thought this could be obtainable. But with all things the perception of this life changing medication is still frowned upon in my area even though I've become a productive member of society once again. Thank you for your work in this field of medicine as well as your video's. 👏

I am so thankful for the education of Buprenorphine and its purpose that you are teaching. I am in Australia and have used the patches, tabs, and now the monthly jab of Buprenorphine. What a relief not having to go to the chemist all the time to fill a script and to be feeling less pain. I thought I was going to die early from lack of pain meds and not being able to care for myself, now I am back in the garden planting food and flowers again.

10/4/20 I am on day 3 of taking 2mg of buprenorphine after a 15 year daily 40mg Norco maintenance program for chronic pain. This video was one strong piece of motivation after my shrink recommended it along with a couple of other options. The greatest motivation of all was of course finding myself in a position of either jumping of a cliff with a higher dosage, legal or otherwise or to quit and this video helped my decision making amazingly so simple and after undergoing the treatment by a professional, my psychiatrists/dealer I find myself free of the chronic craving for more which in my case was exhausting emotionally and had made myself a very damaged, angry person that you wouldn't want to interact with. What is amazing the most to me is how calm I feel without the constant cravings so if you are considering a change with you pain meds this is just one example of how effective this medication has been for me and I have hopes for a even greater and and longer recovery period with Buprenorphine. ***I should note to my surprise no doctor had ever recommended this medication in my past dealings with pain management or my shrink who is a addiction specialist but on the other hand I didn't ask. I should note I am a 70 year old recovering alcoholic who has been clean for almost 4 years so there is hope for anyone of any age and just remember "You are either on the bus or off the bus" Ken Kesey *** I failed to mention the pain relief of this medication to the best of me accessing it over this short 3 day run has been that is is doing perhaps a even better job of controlling my pain than the Norco did and just remember the big bonus, no cravings for more and while I am taking a small dosage it is getting the job done as well if not better than the Norco so don't be concerned that your pain will become a big issue as in my case it hasn't and if I recall Dr. B mentioned that it would be more appropriate to start people on this medicine for pain relief than the other evil drugs such as I was taking, Norco Amen and thank you Dr. B, to say your videos are enlightening would be an understatement, with no bill.

I actually downloaded this video when my rapid taper began in December and I was scared to listen to it for months. THIS is how I found you and I am standing on a threshold. My pain doc appointment will show me the way to go next. I'm down from 3 mg klo to 1 but had to reinstate three days off 😢 I was going to lose my DL and car registration and everything! I'm sick still but not quite as much,5 weeks😮 later. The way I was cut by a psychiatrist after relocating was by way of a protocol that needs to be ABOLISHED 😢 it's gonna be awhile and I don't have all the answers yet, but I am finding out 😢 Thank you for all you are doing. I'm so tired of Drs who don't agree with one another! Patient harm, turmoil, destabilizing and chaos since Oct 2018😢

This is such great information. I have chronic back pain, and my doctor switched me to this medication. I have never felt better! It is amazing. It helps my pain and last much longer. I wish I would have had this before I took hydrocodone for 2 years. Thanks for all your information. I love your videos. The only thing is, that when I tell a doctor I'm on this medicine, they automatically assume I was a heroine addict or other illegal drugs, which I have never done before in my life. So, I hope that assumption will go away.

I believe so too. Like when I take kratom which has a similar effect, perhaps a little weaker but I take quite a lot & dependance can go up so high.. The perception of pain reminds me of sometimes when I take a good dose and you still feel tension or "pain", but it's bearable, you're not really affected by it cuz you got that peaceful & relaxing feel in your body. It seems indeed that full agonists who might remove pain more easily, are indeed a bigger problem over time.. You'll need more & more, effect will lower, you'll need to take it just to feel fine.. I think buprenorphine could be good for me cuz now I have to take like 3-4x Kratom daily which is 30-40grams & I'm afraid that might be harmful to the body over time. If I could with 1 dose of this medication daily, would be better. Don't think i would need more.

I am so glad I have found this RU-vid channel. I have been taking dihydrocodeine for going on for 20 years after contracting pneumococcal meningitis in 1997. The meningitis left me profoundly deaf and with severe headaches. After numerous tests and scans, it was decided that I use pain medication for the headaches. After trying loads of different ones, I found dihydrocodeine worked the best for me. But, 20 years ago when I started taking it, nobody was warning us of the addictive properties etc (im in the UK) so I ended up taking bigger doses of it to get the pain relief I needed. I am now taking much more than I should, and am struggling getting off it. It was only when I decided to stop taking it that I realised just how much my body is addicted to it. Buprenorphine has been mentioned to me, so I am trying to get all the info I can about it. This channel is going to help me a lot. Thank you.

Buprenorphine Is very hard to get off if you taper it's not so badd but if you get a binder something in have to come off of a stable dose it can take 3 to 4 weeks to feel better from physical withdraw so unless you're willing to do that I wouldn't get on it but if you're able to taper off that could be a good idea that's up to you good luck

Dr B ... I am on suboxone and it has been a saving grace. I was addicted to heroin. I’ve been clean for a year now. I have osteo degenerative arthritis and it is becoming very painful. There’s no way I will ever be prescribed opiates again because of my past addiction. But, what do I do for this pain? Also, I had to have surgery and I was told by the surgeon to go off of the suboxone two days before the surgery. They said they would manage my post op pain with opiates. However they were very uneducated about what managing post op pain for a suboxone patient should look like. Doctors need to educated about this. Because no one should have to suffer in pain after surgery.

I normally don't comment on posts but I am a 43yr old woman with chronic pain (moderate scoliosis/kyphosis, DDD, and lumbar stenosis) and new issues (ac joint pain/osteoarthritis). I'm in PT and I just put on my 2nd Butrans patch. I was never on opiates full time, only intermittently because my doctor couldn't prescribe them for very many days. I've tried kratom as well. I finally got into pain management here in West KY. They put me on this patch. 7.5mcg/hr. As I said, I have never had an opiate or any other addiction. Maybe I'm impatient but it's just not working yet. I also have dental pain which is a whole different beast, but that will be fixed soon. I just don't want to spend 241 on patches again and it not work. I'm in pain, my right shoulder kills me, the dry needling is helping a little. But I don't notice any pain relief. And to think I had a panic attack trying to use this the first week. IDK what to do but keep waiting on results. I go back to pain management Nov 8th and my prescription copay is just high bc I started this new job and got new ins in Sept. I feel hopeless and in pain. I don't want surgery, I just want to feel better. I can't take NSAIDS so I'm taking Tylenol too.

i think you're minimizing the negative side effects of suboxone and how hard it is to come off. when i was on it my libido was almost non existent. as a guy in his 20' early 30's that is not a good thing. it made me numb to a lot of emotions and it interacts with certain over the counter meds negatively. ive been off it for 9 months. and i was physically sick for the first 3 weeks and then i dealt with severe depression for about 5 months. people need to know these things before they go on suboxone maintenance. doctors over prescribe this drug and give people way more than what they need. i should have taken it for a week after coming off heroin but i listened to my doctor and stayed on it for four years. worst mistake of my life..

I've often wondered a bit whenever I read or hear it said that Buprenorphine shouldn't/doesn't get you high, because I've found that while almost completely true, there is an obvious exception, and that's opioid naive individuals who take a dose for the first time which is a substantial dose for such a person (say, 8mg) they appear to experience the itching (pruritus) and constricted pupils(miosis) associated with opioids but do feel somewhat high, just nothing like a full agonist. People in UK in prison who manage to be able to crush and sniff them report defo doing.

Also, can you help us understand pure buprenorphine in all the ways that you have discussed methadone and suboxone? Thank you for your non-judgmental understanding of this “disease.” SusanPD

Question for you Doctor. In general do you think dosing buprenorphine ONCE per day is more effective and beneficial than split dosing (taking two doses per day). I can never seen to find any agreement on this matter after talking to many different medical experts and patients. From a phycological point I can see single dosing per day being better as the patient isn't in that addict mindset of waiting and anticipating their second dose. They take one dose in the morning and then forget about it for the rest of the day. I have spoken many people who say that split dosing suits them better because they say they start feeling "off" come late afternoon, early evening. I'd love to know what you think on the matter. Even better would be a video dedicated to the topic. I genuinely believe that a video could be beneficial to a huge amount of people out there. Both patients and professionals alike.

Hi I’m on 2 mg .05 Suboxone . I am going thru a lot of depression. I have been put on this because I wanted to get off the prescribed opiates that I have been on for 12 years . The Suboxone has made me very depressed. My pain doctor has now prescribed me belbuca 750 mcg two times a day and titrate me down . Have you used this med before for your patients? Do you know more about this ? It is extremely expensive, but if this helps I will take . Please help.

Do you happen to know if Kratom is a full on agonist that not only locks onto that receptor but does it also turn on the other pain and euphoric etc properties as something like Oxycodone does?
@DrBAddictionRecovery
@DrBAddictionRecovery 5 лет назад
Hi Suzo, Kratom is plant based. It effects opiate receptors, amongst oth receptors, some of them unknown, . clinically it acts, depending on the dose, both as a stimulant, and as an opiate. It can have effects, on pain, dysphoria, amongst many other properties. It is not FDA approved for anything and withdrawal symptoms can mimic opiate withdrawal symptoms. Although many people use it to come off opiates, there have been no studies to confirm this and in my experience I usually have to detox them off of Kratom. One other thing, people do die from this drug!!
@jasonspring2034

People have died from water and coffee as well. Very few people have died from kratom alone, most were multi drug related incidents.

I have had 3 back surgeries in the last 11 years. My doctor has kept me on opioid the entire time. I would like to only use opioid if I really need them for severe pain. I was thinking about Suboxone. What do you suggest?
@DrBAddictionRecovery
@DrBAddictionRecovery 5 лет назад
I have never used subs intermittently in that way, but what a great question. I would talk to someone, but with me, if it is something I was gonna try I would try a low dose like 2mg as needed. Never heard it used that way. I think one of the main questions would be how often does a patient need it and I would go from there. Hope that helps.

Dr B. I’ve been on suboxone since 2014 and haven’t touched anything since I started going to the clinic to start on it. So my question is while they were trying to get my dose figured out I told the dr that it wasn’t lasting till the next morning. I was on 16 mg . The dr recommended that I take one in the mornin and one before bed . It worked fine but I’ve read that u are not supposed to do that because it is habit forming ? Is there any truth to this ?

Belbuca AND oxycodone?! I may not be a Doctor but I'm 99% sure that buprenorphine products (such as belbuca) should definitely not be prescribed at the same time as full agonist opiate such as oxycodone. You're almost certainly flirting with putting the patient into precipitated withdrawals. What is Precipitated withdrawal? Precipitated withdrawal can occur when an antagonist (or partial antagonist, such as buprenorphine) is administered to a patient dependent on full agonist opioids. I'd double check with your Doctor and make sure he understands what he's doing. It really really scares me; the amount of "Doctors" out there writing prescriptions for drugs or combinations of drugs without truly understanding how they work or interact with each other or react with the patient. Good luck and hope you get sorted.

@Mibebe59 5 лет назад
@@tintintb1980 you know it's funny you say that because she did not mention I was going to go through withdrawals. I started feeling very sick and I called she said that I was going to be weaned off the oxycodone and to try to do it over the weekend. I broke down because she did not consult any if this before she out me on balbuca not did she say I was coming off oxy, or that I would go through withdrawals being in both. I told her I'm not ready and I'm fine of oxy for now at least. Living with chronic pain sucks so much. I feel so overwhelmed trying to get something that works for me. I am seeing her on Tues. To tell her she screwed up by not consulting me what she was doing.
