Cervical dystonia (sometimes called neck dystonia) is the abnormal position of the muscles of the neck, causing a twisted, turned, flexed or extended neck position. Abnormal signals coming from the deep parts of the brain cause this condition and therefore it is not muscular in nature and will not resolve with muscle massage or stretching.
The mainstay of treatment of cervical dystonia is with injection of botulinum toxin, such as Botox or Xeomin. Botulinum toxin injections work by causing a disruption between the nerve and the muscle, thereby weakening the muscle that it is injected into. For cervical dystonia, because the muscles that are pulling or twisting the neck to one side are overactive, Botox works to calm those specific muscles down and allows for a more natural and neutral head position.

I recently got diagnosed with cervical dystonia in December 2022. The pain is excruciating. I also get head tremors and intense headaches right at the back of my head. I tried botox, which seems to work but I still keep up with physiotherapy and chiropractic treatments as well as massage therapy. Sadly this is a life long condition 😢😢

What’s up, Big Foot. I thought this was forever too and it’s not. I’m making what looks like a full recovery after adding psychedelic therapy to my daily brain training routine. If you want to get over this thing, you can! It’s 100% possible to build a new pathway for movement. It took some effort but I’m learning science just doesn’t know how to treat this thing yet. If you’re motivated, you can end this thing. Look up Neil Durrans or Hope For Dystonia on RU-vid. Both these channels are run by guys that recovered as well, I’m not (totally) nuts! Lol Seriously, give them a look it’s for real!

I was diagnosed with Cervical Dystonia January of 2020, following 2 years of relentless trauma to my cervical spine. The posture you described as jutting forward & rare) Here is the abridged version. Car accident fractured c-6, March 2019 Anterior Corpectomy C-5 to C-7. Two months later my right arm started to feel quite weak and the pain from the corpectomy was getting worse and not better. Several months later the pain became incapacitating so MRI, which showed a fractured c-7. Neurosurgeon told me "Too much torque on the screws holding the plate fractured your c-7". So, November 2019 Posterior Laminectomy from c-2 to t-1 (Hardware in my cervical spine consists of 10 bolts, 2 rods & the plate spanning c-5 to c-7 from the anterior corpectomy also still there) By the first week of January 2020 the muscles in my neck, face, throat and upper back were incredibly painful, three times normal size and the consistency of bone. I was then diagnosed with CD and my treatment plan seems to resemble most I see here in the comments, pain meds and Botox. 70+ injections every 3 months and each time at least half a dozen needles bend due to how unbelievably hard they are! The pain at all times is debilitating and exhausting. I'm in Hell.

I have Benign Essential Blepharospasm with Apraxia and Meige Syndrome. I now have other issues that I think are Dystonia. Cranial dystonia being one of them. I have been seeing a Neurologist out of state. I had him refer me to one in my town. I've been experiencing a lot of pain.

Doctors have no idea what dystonia is or how to treat it. I was told I would never recover and this was totally untrue. I started to recover shortly after experimenting with DMT. Was over the chronic pain 1 month later. By 6 months, I was capable of moving any way I liked!

@samuelcarpenter2852 I think DMT is a psychedelic drug, can also stand for Disease Modyfying Treatment but I believe in this case it is the actual drug. As a ex addict I will most definitely be steering clear of it 😅 Botox didn't work for me but the chiropractor helps a great deal although very expensive and not covered on the NHS.

@@mariasofia5257 hey friend I’d encourage you to look into meditation, yoga, and hypnosis for the same benefits I got out of psychedelics. The drug experience did forcefully precipitate tons of revelations, but the big changes came from going back to that place every day through my meditation practice. I started attempting movement rehab on my own 10 months ago and would say I’m about 75% recovered. Have heard of others that claim full recovery in 1-2 years. There’s also a lot I can do better than pre-dystonia and even new stuff I’m learning like dance and singing. I could barely walk with a cane last summer, this year I’m enjoying backpacking in the mountains with way too much gear in my bag. I fired everyone except my chiropractor and he tells me to just keep doing my thing and even stopped recommending I get botox. Both of us are convinced science is just missing something right now. I say screw dystonia, build yourself a new control center! 😃

Wrong! I was diagnosed with cervical dystonia in 1995. Took both BOTOX Injections for 10 years plus the use of Baclophen. Neither treatment did any good whatsoever. I just DOES NOT WORK!!!!! Yoga stretches over the years has done the most to help relieve some of the excruciating pain.
