Colour in music can mean a number of different things. Some musicians experience Synesthesia in which particular notes, keys or chords are experienced directly in relation to particular colours. We talk about the Blues or about white noise, both terms that raise a reference to colour. The video expands on the above then goes on to explore colour in relation to chords, different textures, and to the varying colours available between one instrument or voice and another, and within the ranges of particular instruments or voices. The impact of dynamics, articulation, particular playing techniques, sound waves and instrument design all play their part in contributing to the colour and consequent emotional impact of a score. This music appreciation lesson explores the topic from the perspectives of the listener, the performer and the composer.

I’m old enough to remember when music was all in black and white. We thought that was good enough because we didn’t know any different.

Thank you so much for an extremely interesting tutorial.I found it amazing that so much thought goes into choosing the instruments ( particularly in an orchestra) to give the colour that the composer wishes to project. How much more one can get out of listening to a piece knowing all that you talked about , most grateful .

I thought colour in music was an obscure term used to describe certain melodies and chords but I am happy to be proven wrong! You have explained what it really is so well and I thank you for that. For me this is a whole new way of thinking. I have always struggled bringing my compositions from sheet music into instrumentation, knowing what I want it to sound like in my head but never quite achieving it and I think the reason for this is that I have not been selecting and controlling the colour of my sound. I will be working hard on this from now on. Thank you again for your generosity in sharing your knowledge with us.

Oh no, what happened to that poor little duck? 😂 Talking about texture, I think a follow up video about common types of textures and how timbres of various instruments interact could be really insightful. As always a great video. Thank you for your ongoing work and for sharing your knowledge with us :)

Thank you very much for this interesting video! I'll go back to it! Very useful for me who am writing a piece implying oboe and flute....and start playing the violin (crazy old woman! it"s an electric Yamaha violin using headphones...so my husband doesn't suffer), excellent for ear training and creating sound!

I have a specific color-shape for each note. But the more I started fine-tuning my own hearing (pianist here), I began to realize that my hearing was entirely spectral, beginning with Middle-C as red, (where rainbow begins). My work seems to be controversial because I argue that we ALL hear these colorings in the same way. C, red, is a warm color by nature (love songs of old and new.) A-flat, blue, is the coldest color (songs about death, or estrangement. “Every Breath You Take.”). The spectrum ends with magenta, B (spirt world, the aethers: Ray Parker Jr.’s “Ghostbusters.” My work can be found here on this given uTube channel: The Acoustic Rabbit Hole

Many people hear notes/ keys/ chords in relation to colours; many don’t. If it works for some that’s great.

I don't hear the notes as color either, I just started realizing that the notes differ in intrinsic "texture." And I realized then that our actually hearing is spectral. This also explains why people even have perfect pitch at all. They simply have learned to identify those innate colorings of each specific note.@@MusicMattersGB

Also, allow me to apologize for not acknowledging your very thorough video. I DO understand what you mean my COLOR in music in relation to timbre and orchestration. I jumped in wit a contrary definition, without any reference. Here's one example. The Liszt transcription "La Campanella" from the Paganni opera is is A-flat. Which is a cold key, distant sounding. I always think of twinkling stars when I hear an A-flat. A-flat falls onto the blue on the spectrum (If we begin with C-256 Hz as red). The piece was not named "La Campanella" (The Bell) by Liszt. The people just started calling it that. Because they understood the bell-like quality of the A-flat note. We have lost this knowledge, even down to the conservatory level.

Thx 👍 😊 What the difference between timbre and colour?
@MusicMattersGB
@MusicMattersGB Год назад
Colour might be achieved by variety in the texture and/ or by the use of instruments. Timbre is more a matter of tone and differences achieved between different parts of the range etc. There’s a strong overlap between the two.
