Why is there so much hate on here? Why is this about America and Britain? We all know for people that don't play a sport or said sport isn't part of their country's cultural fabric it's going to be hard to understand. If brits are so smart, and it takes a brain to understand cricket and not baseball how come no Brit can understand American football? British people with their massive brains and superior intelligence should be able to understand it right? But Americans do when they don't because it's part of our culture just Like cricket is part of British culture. My point is both countries have beautiful cultures. Why can't Americans like one thing and brits like another? Why is everything right or wrong? Can we just accept each other's differences and move one?
@@sounaksharma7486 Yes a culture of liberty and rugged individualism that has enriched the world so that people everywhere need not be enslaved by their own culture, can still draw from its roots but forge their own path as well.
Yes I do. It began when I lived in London. And then I moved to the Cayman islands. It was the only answer to baseball for me. And then I realized I like it.
tjb516 Interesting.D'you think the new fast format has a potential to attract Americans to the sport? Was it hard to fet used to the slow pace of a sport?
Are you from south asian/south african/Zimbabwean/british of west indian/australian/new zealander descent? Or may be a tibetian based in India? Or an English living in USA? Perhaps a Scottish or Irish?
Honestly, explaining cricket to anyone who hasn't played is difficult. There's too much to talk about, and most people wouldn't have the patience to hear it all. The best way to learn it is to play it. Forget talking about it - go out and do it. It's way more fun in action than it is on paper.
shivansh srivastava When i say most popular, I mean how many people play, follow and like cricket. 2.5 billion/7billion peeps in the world like cricket, 3.5 billion/7 billion peeps like soccer, there's not even millions who like MMA and UFC. This is what I know.
shivansh srivastava I don't even know why u r so insulted. I just said a fact, and said it in my point. Yes it is the second most popular sport, and a few Americans don't know about cricket, in that matter, why do u need to get so triggered?
shivansh srivastava mate, not all fucking 1.3 billion watch cricket, half the population don't have t.v's and 3/4 of that enjoy cricket. It's like saying, "Oh look, every Australian plays AFL footy, every American person plays Baseball,” it doesn't work like that.
+Zihan Khan wait what..............whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat.......................no I mean srsly............whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat??????????????????????????????????????????????????
Cricket is mainly known as gentelman game...not like NBA or american football..very less body contact which means less collision between players..perhaps in baseball u could see constant striking of the ball but in cricket we play shots with elegants, footworks, timing and obviously striking too its a full combination...well english invented cricket but we r the champions now..champion dhoni boys
***** well after all its all juz game buddy. .win or lose is part of game..yup we lost the test series but looking forward to the oneday matches. .we got plenty of youngsters coming in especially sanju samson..he is from my home town lets hope he debut in england..well congratulations to team England for the fabulous victory over india..deserve it big time..well but still oneday matches yet to come fingers crossed😊😊😊😀😀😀
The ashes are supposedly the 'ashes' of a bail that was burned by the English players after they were shocked to be defeated away in Australia and then in England. Lords turned orange, English cricket lovers' faces turned red.🏏
Correction, they're actually metaphorical ashes. When Australia beat England there was a famous new article about it slamming the England team which said that English cricket had died and "the body will be cremated and the ashes taken to Australia"
What are the Ashes? On 29 August 1882 Australia defeated England in a cricket match played at Kennington Oval, London. There was a great deal of dismay felt by the English about this loss and a few days later a mock obituary notice written by Reginald Shirley Brooks appeared in the Sporting Times which read: "In affectionate remembrance of English Cricket which died at the Oval on 29 August 1882. Deeply lamented by a large circle of sorrowing friends and acquaintances. RIP. NB. The body will be cremated and the ashes taken to Australia." It had previously been arranged that a cricket team captained by Ivo Bligh would tour Australia in 1882-83 and this team became the English hope of victory. Before leaving England for Australia, Bligh pledged to bring back "The Ashes of English cricket". Thus was born the greatest contest known to man. Currently (2017 - 5 Test series) - Australia lead 3-0 but England have put up a mighty display and may win this Melbourne Test and make it 3-1. We live in hope! By the way, Freddie Flintoff was the best modern day cricketer . He breathed life into the game at just the right time. Yes.....I'm an Aussie but I loved Freddie.
Lol i m an american... I love cricket the bowling, sixes, catches, fielding, anxiety it creates is gud.. Baseball is shit. Just no gameplan and brain is involved in it. Nd even i love football but also in my country many people prefer rugby that is no good as compared to football... I have actually played nd watched many sports nd at the end i can say that of all sports my nation plays the worst sports.. May b any tym in future i wish we wuld start playing the real sports....
Freddie did not explain the full story of the ASHES. The first time Australia toured England and played them at home in a test, Australia won. It was described in the papers as "The death of English cricket". The bails of the stumps were burned and put in an urn as its funeral. Then it became the trophy that was played for every 2-3 years when the 2 teams met in a test series to defend the ASHES. Rememeber a test series is 5 tests. Each one lasting 5 days.
mithil more and there it is someone tried to make something completely unrelated to politics political. Btw I would have voted leave, sanity and democracy prevailed, onya Britain.
Lmao I’m not Pakistani but India has really dumb ignorant cunts of fans who don’t know shit. India lost to Bangladesh in 2007 and there they are boasting about wins against Pakistan. Kohli is not special anymore and dhoni is too old to play and doesn’t do his job. Their middle order doesn’t exist and it’s only the bowlers and sharma who give them a victory
YOUR OFFICIAL DAD Bangladesh and I like every country who plays cricket apart from India coz they are rude and disrespectful asshole who think they are the best.
@@Ok-us5th Kohli is not special anymore lol. You're the one ignorant here bro. And BTW your team sucks India is the no 1 side in the world and will remain in the coming decade whether you like it or not.
Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, Pitbull all performed in India for IPL but she couldnt cause she wanted more money than them plus private plane to fly her from US to India and back
I like how with Cricket even when you're trying to describe the simplist thing to someone who knows nothing you need to explain half of the entire sport
+Kevin Cordoba-Llanos Cricket is popular worldwide. Not only is it played in England but also in Wales, New Zealand, Australia, the West Indies, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Namibia, the United Arab Emirates, Papua New Guinea, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Afganistan, the Netherlands, the Republic of Ireland and a host of other countries.
The ashes are the remains of the bails from the first test England lost to Australia. The papers at the time ran the headline that this was "The Death of English Cricket".
I can make it more memorable for you. Cricket is a sport where the 'creators' of the game themselves have not scored a single world cup in their history! Kudos to you :D Btw before you attribute everything to Americans, this is a British television show people
American sports are basically an evolution of European sports. The development of the sport forked differently on the other side of the pond. Rounders evolved into Baseball. While Rugby evolved into Gridiron Football. In Australia, Rugby evolved into a Australian Rules Football. Even the sport of Cricket is evolving into shorter game format like Twenty20. Since a Test Match takes several days to finish and isn’t fan friendly to watch.
You people never realize the intensity of last over when there is 15 to 20 run to win the best bowler is there and anything can happen. Tailenders trying to save the match on 5th day of test match facing all those bouncers and sledging. F*ck that is the best sporting moment for me anytime
Seen so many comments saying one sport is 'easier' that the other. Thats just not true, each has its own challenges. And to say baseball doesn't require any thought couldn't be further from the truth. Unless you've played the game, avoid commenting on how 'easy' you think it is, because trust me, hitting a ball moving 94-100 mph in ANY sport is hard, thats without taking into account various situational factors in both baseball AND cricket that will change where the ball should go, and anyone who says its easy, I can guarantee they haven't ever played the sport to any sort of competitive level. Just like cricket, baseball isn't always 'hit the ball as far and as hard as possible', there are situational factors that dictate what the hitter needs to do to. Avoid labelling one sport as easy and one as hard, they're different games that require different skills. And the bottomline is that hitting a baseball is SCIENTIFICALLY proven to be the hardest thing to do in sport. You literally don't have enough time to think and hit at the same time, a 96mph pitch gives you 0.4 of a second to decide to swing and actually swing, not to mention timing your swing so the bat meets the ball on an area of that bat no bigger than an inch and half wide so that it goes forward. Of course, this kind of speed is seen in cricket, but the margin for error is greater simply because the ball is in play wherever you hit it AND the bat is bigger so you are more likely to make contact. But that doesnt make either sport easier than the other, they just present different challenges...
RIP .. TWO MINS SILENCE FOR EVERYONE WHO IS SAYING CRICKET IS SECOND MOST POPULAR SPORT AND IS A GLOBAL SPORT LMAO ... OUT OF TOTAL 1.5-2 BILLION FANS IN WORLD 1 BILLION IS FROM INDIA AND THE OTHER 1 BILLION IS FROM PAKISTAN, BANGLADESH, SRI LANKA , AUSTRALIA ALL MIXED TOGETHER.... OOF THESE CRICKET LOVERS WILL NEVER STOP CRITICIZING FOOTBALL OUT OF JEALOSY .. BCS DEEP INSIDE THEY KNOW FOOTBALL IS 100 TIMES BIGGER IN POPULARITY , BUDGET EVERYTHING ... AND IF WE LOOK AT GLOBAL SPORT LEVEL( NOT ONLY ONE COUNTRY LIKE FOR CRICKET IN INDIA ) CRICKET IS NOT EVEN IN TOP 10 .. NO CRITICISM ONLY TRUTH
+Rusty GODAMN I know what cricket and American sports are capable of I was born in America and I still live in it so umm duh cricket is a nation wide sport Americas football lol is only one country
+Gopi Maddi not only America. But Argentina Brazil Chile Mexico Colombia etc etc and every other South American nation, Russia Spain Italy Germany Poland etc etc are on the list, even Asian countries like China Korea Japan Thailand etc etc etc. Cricket is said to be the 2nd most popular sport mainly due to our tremendous contribution with a population of 1.2+ billion people. Now if India was crazy about Basketball it will automatically make it 2nd most popular sport. Football being the most popular.
+Rusty "shit sport", yet being more popular than all the Murican sports put together. "We like our athletes who are actual athletes with 5% body fat and not lazy beerguts" . Correction "we like our athletes who are actual pussies with overly used protection like in Murican football and baseball" ;)
Bend it over on google mate. It's the reason people here in Australia don't take to baseball - because it comes from rounders which became baseball and softball.
Yep, before that in the USA it was the game played in private girls schools. A thing that continues to this day in the UK, Australia, India etc. It's what hurts baseball most in these places. Shame, a schoolmate of mine was a spin bowler (cricket) but had a great nack for pace when needed who got a scholarship to go to the states with baseball and never made minors but got a degree free out of it and after that no one in sports wanted to help him after. He plays club baseball here but it's no where near a semi pro sport at all. Cricket is the national sport and there is such a stigma around baseball, not least of all the rule of not hitting the batter (batsman) which is a big thing of cricket because that's allowed.
Sloth from The Goonies If you lose in group stage of world cup then it won't make the news..and if you win a ODI series and it makes the headlines...That's the British media for you.....but i am sure you guys will be all over the moon if you win the worldcup...even if we take the recent ODI series against newzealand..That was such an electrifying one...i can still feel that moment.. that cheer when morgon scored a ton..you guys enjoyed it..didn't you....there is no deny that Ashes is competetive...but at times too boring particularly in Australia
Ravi Teja No. The media isn't that fussed by cricket in general, except the ashes. I remember England winning the T20 world cup, it barely made the news.
Thank God Freddie Flintoff has more of a sense of humour than many of the commenters here. As an Australian, I totally understand Americans' confusion about this silly game.
It's really hard to explain cricket to people who don't know about it.. I was trying to explain the rules to my Russian colleague and I can't stop giggling coz it's really tough for people who are not born in a cricket playing nation..
Cricket explained. You have two sides, one out in the field and one in. Each man that's in the side that's in goes out, and when he's out he comes in and the next man goes in until he's out. When they are all out, the side that's out comes in and the side thats been in goes out and tries to get those coming in, out. Sometimes you get men still in and not out. When a man goes out to go in, the men who are out try to get him out, and when he is out he goes in and the next man in goes out and goes in. There are two men called umpires who stay all out all the time and they decide when the men who are in are out. When both sides have been in and all the men have been out, and both sides have been out twice after all the men have been in, including those who are not out, that is the end of the game!
I tried watching the Sri Lanka , India Match this morning and started figuring it out a lil bit but it was pretty damn confusing-- What i picked up the most is how they score but not the value of points or when someone is out ect--
I thinks the Ashes come from the first international game between England and Australia. To everyone's surprise the Australians won. An English commentator said it was the death of English cricket and to symbolise the death he "cremated" a bail. A bail is a small object placed on top of the stumps. Knocking the bail off the top of the stumps proves the stumps (the wicket) was hit. The ashes from one bail creates a tiny amount of ash. It is stored in an equally tiny ern and is given to the side winning a series of games between England and Australia , known as the Ashes.
They are International Role models and they don't know about Cricket.. The Second Largest sport in the World.... And Cricket is Hard ... Baseball is easy.. In cricket you require Brains along with your stamina to play it
Cricket is a fantastic game. Very sociable and healthy. It's getting more inclusive, which is great. I predict England men will struggle in the next ashes. Stokes has taken on the role of Freddie. Hopefully he can continue the renaissance.
In Affectionate Remembrance of ENGLISH CRICKET, which died at the Oval on 29 August 1882, Deeply lamented by a large circle of sorrowing friends and acquaintances R.I.P. N.B.-The body will be cremated and the ashes taken to Australia.. That is the obituary written after the 1882 series where England lost to Australia where the 'demon bowler' Fred Spofforth decimated the English batting line up to defend a very low total
Baseball was derived from Cricket. The first International cricket match ever played was between Canada and the United States. A hit in Baseball, if played during a cricket match, is best described as a 'slog' to the leg side. Purists have derogatorily named it 'cow corner'. It is the easiest and some would say 'agricultural' stroke to play, and not always expedient in cricket because the ball can be hit towards any direction. Most opposition teams would try to avoid feeding a batsman a stroke towards cow corner, whereas baseball demands the opposition place the ball right in the that hitting zone. No doubt the reason why the bats used in baseball are deemed to be thinner.
How to Americans know croquet but not cricket. If you wanna explain cricket to Americans it's the better version of the one country played sport known as Baseball.
+CfCFan99 Dude, you are talking about Jennifer Lopez here. Don't lump all Yanks in with Lopez. The average American baseball fan knows what cricket is.
+Josh Hanson The term 'Ashes' was first used after England lost to Australia - for the first time on home soil - at The Oval on 29th August 1882. A day later, the Sporting Times carried a mock obituary of English cricket which concluded that: "The body will be cremated and the ashes taken to Australia".
Terrence Holmes Yes, which is not the first time they played and also not the series when the ashes were put into the urn. That happened in the next series in Australia..... Would you like to tell me any other things that I already know?
+Terrence Holmes you told me something I never knew. Josh can shove it up his arse, if you're going to correct something then provide the correct details, don't just say 'this is wrong'; you can forgive Terrence for assuming you were ignorant, because that's how you come across.
Cricket is the most sophisticated game in the whole world. It's certainly not easy to explain but when you get it there's nothing more interesting than it.
Wow are you wrong. Naismith was Canadian American. he invented the game in Springfield Massachusetts, USA, while teaching at the International YMCA Training School which became Springfield College. Do your research before you make ridiculous statements.
