All insects are attracted to any bird food, or treats. I found a palmetto bug when my Sister brought over her Parakeet for a couple of days. These seeds are notorious for a bug to appear and eat. I sweep 3x's a day to prevent the unwanted roaches.
I never knew a cuttlefish 🐠 bone is from a fish. I always wondered why it is called that but never bothered to research. Wow! We learn something new everyday! 😊 Thank you very much for sharing this information! 😊👍🏻
I have a 4 yr old Indian ringneck parrot. I grew up in Lynnfield ma . When I was growing up in Lynnfield ma. I live near where I grew up. I'm a retired dental laboratory technician crown and Bridge laboratory . I did my studying, & watched your videos . Adam which he was born in Tallahassee Florida & got the utmost care. After a yr the males the males get a colorful ring around thier neck . He is so special which the avian specialist at bird supply in Nashua new Hampshire gets 5 stars. Thier are not one pet stores in Massachusetts that have parrots no more parrots to sell .
Love your vidoes. I have a female cockateil and she finally let me pet her today. I've been watching your videos and I know our relationship has a long way ahead but I am patient.
Hi, yeah Jake destroyed it in about a minute, he is a conure, but my vet. said Jake doesn't need this since as you know i just had all his. Bloodwork done and he is in great health! Thanx Donna, alot of bird owners don't know that it can get sharp and hurt them, glad you showed the kind where this won't happen!♥️♥️♥️and yes female egg layers do need extra calcium, for sure!👍for Jake the veggies help him😉
My finches never ate the cuttlebone so i cut it into tiny pieces and scrape it into a small feeder. They get extremely excited for it now. It works great. I use the hard back in soil for plants, as fertilizer.
I really enjoy your videos, it's like going to bird school. You know so much. I've had canaries for 5 years now and I've done my homework as well as watch your videos for advice to caring for my canaries. Thanks 🤓
Awesome info, Donna! I've seen bird owners give egg food to their female birds when they were breeding and having issues. Later that bird passed away. I suspect it was egg bound. These birds need calcium, not more protein and fat. I feel like these situations can be minimized with proper nutritional knowledge.
Aww sad, but it's the egg shell that has the calcium in it, that part, the shell , is good for them, bbut being egg bound, the bird needed to sèe a vet.__/ might have got help and still be alive, so very sad😢😢♥️
Another thing is if you live somewhere it naturally washes up on the beach collect it and there's a few ways to sterilize it i boil mine for 10 _20 mins and then leave it to sun dry for a couple days but you can also soak it in vanodine or other bird safe disinfectant, For me boiling works best because it removes all smell of salt so i dont have to worry about my bird eating any bad stuff ,my cockateil loves it and sits ontop it eating so i break big peices in half and only give a new one once a month to every few months i doubt this is that useful but i hope it helps someone somewhere
Love these videos and the background music as well! I wanted to go to my first bird show in Ontario this year but they are all closed due to Covid. Im hoping next year they will be back on!
Glad you enjoy my videos. I was so looking forward to going to the bird show and was disappointed that it won't happen this year. Hopefully next year it will happen
Hi Donna, i never have given my big parrot a cuttlebone but i think i will offer it to him. I love the way you explain things too .Thanks for sharing this as it might be something my Timneh might enjoy. He went for his annual vet physical yesterday . The hard part was catching him to put him in the carrier lol. Here where i live they take my bird from the car as iam still not allowed to go in.They ask me questions about him on my smart phone as to what hes eating etc.I hope someday they can go back to normal but i guess it will be awhile yet. Thanks again Donna
Thier no pet stores in Massachusetts that have parrots. Adam is so loving. At night when im watching cronicle or something else. He will start kissing me on my side of my cheek & other places on my face & would never poke me in my eyes because he knows it is a very delicate matter. I could hugged Adam to death. Adam which sincerely Barry Shulman.
Ah, once again, such a nice video. I have watched through it 3 times already and glad that I have been doing something right in providing a cuttlebone to my budgies (although I thought it was for their beak filing; hahaha!) They also eat lots of chop which includes broccoli and cauliflower, so at least I know that they are getting the proper amount of calcium. It's always good to see Marbles at 3:45 and 14:18, even though you stated that cuttlebone is really for small birds; Marbles can really tear apart a cuttlebone, LOL. Hey Donna, check your PayPal account; I always enjoy seeing Marbles and want to get her a good toy for tearing/shredding apart. Keep the videos coming; they are very educational.
Birds in the wild get calcium from the soil, clay licks, buildings, exoskeletons of bugs, snail shells, egg shells, fish bones, ashes, their own food source etc.
Great video as always🌷 My birds like to chew on bricks (dont ask lol I have 4 supporting my table) but they have a mineral block which they ignore. They do like cuttlebone as well. Is that ok?
I purchased a cutterbone for my Parakeet. He ate it, and a bug was on this bone, and caused him to lose the usage of his right foot. Why do these cutterbones attract bugs? He lived to 15, but was unable to be a total Parakeet. Very upsetting to watch.
My female parrotlet would CHOMP on hers! She still broke her leg when she was 12, I never understood why she didn't get strong bones because she laid only a few eggs in her life and her food contained Vitamin D.
That's too bad about your parrotlet breaking her leg. She could still have strong bones and break her leg as accidents happen occasionally. Hope she is okay.
@@Loveofpets the vet saved her life and she healed and lived 6 more happy months, but then she broke the same leg in a different spot and her heart couldn't take it :(
