I am from Hong Kong and agree with the grammar is very unique against English & Chinese. Someone might think that is easier to pick up Japanese if you understand Chinese since Japanese shares some similarity with Chinese because of the history background. For me, they are totally different.
@@EanaHufwe "It's a pen" would be more natural. You only (usually) use "this" or "that" when the noun after it is first introduced, afterwards you refer to it as "it". "what's this?" "It's a pen" or "a pen" (自然) The only time you would use "this is a pen" is if you were introducing it to someone who doesn't know what it is, and hasn't already asked you what it is.
