I haven't DJ'ed in about 18 years and recently started to gain interest again. So I started watching some Wu-Tang scratch sessions on YT. I had NO IDEA this technology existed and was getting ready to go to war in the comments saying the video I was watching was fake and blah blah. I'm glad my old ass researched a bit before hand. The DJ maneuvers I was watching were all there and accurate which was confusing the shit outta me because the song kept changing without the needle switching positions on the vinyl and the dj would just randomly pick the needle up and drop it with a flick of the wrist. I was like... NOPE FAKE. I landed on this video and I'm glad I did. This technology is absolutely amazing and I wish I had it back when I was in my prime. The mixing and scratching skill is still fully there. It's just made more accessible and quicker to access. Incredible technology and I'm going to dive deeper into. Thank you for the video and clarification!

I was standing next to ritchie hawtin in the booth while he was using his beta version of final scratch (now serato i think?) at axis in Boston in 99/2000. Its real. Ritchie invented it (naturally). I looked on and pretty much figured what was going on with the analog digital conversion of the timecode at the time, because other USB midi controllers were birthing at the time, but anybody else and i might have thought it would be a fad, but since it was the Plastikman, I knew i was watching history. Now you know something about the history of Techno on this continent. THanks for reading.

+Jonathan V. Believe me man, you can't explain that to 'softwear djs' It's part of the entire experience for oldschool djs and even newer ones before a gig to spend time flipping thru your crates of vinyl, putting together mixes and other vinyl to take to the gig. It gets you pumped up for the party!! We flip thru crates, not files!! It gets you more pumped than just reading the text of a file/track name, boring. I just agree to disagree with them, we're all different but you'll have those ppl that are 'always right' and there way is always 'better than everyone elses'. I don't call them lazy unless they're just standing there pushing a play button, standing there bouncing up and down like idiots with their hands above their heads in the shape of a heart! Lol! Wtf?

i remember when DVS came out, my friend who was a DJ at the time back in university bought the first ever serato DVS system and we were messing around with it. it was sooo fun. living in a country where good vinyl records were very hard to come by, this allowed us to really be able to experience vinyl DJing but in an accessible way! he never stuck with it though and sold it after a while coz it didn't really work for him being a mobile DJ having turntables was more of a hassle than it was worth and back in early 2000s vinyl and turntables didn't have the same appeal they do now. i never really DJed at the time but much later (5 or 6 years ago) i got into DJing but i took the controller side of things, DJing mainly techno and some house, i went the traktor route, built my own controllers and controller mappings to do exactly what i wanted and it was fun for a bit but i got kindof tired of it, there was no pleasure from it personally. Now i'm starting to feel the desire to DJ again but this time i've already aquired a small collection of vinyl and my love of vinyl has grown a lot and i decided to get back into DJing but with real vinyl. i'm probably not going to be playing any shows or anything it's merely a desire to have fun with music. i might end up switching to DVS if i start feeling the need to perform or make more sets often but i think for now i'll stick to the techno vinyl collection i'm slowly building up. bought a very cheap setup that most people would judge me horrible on and gonna start learning how to properly mix vinyl and beatmatch and all that. gone are the days of having 4 different tracks running at the same time being looped and key matched and tempo synced :D

Now I understand why in competitions , dj's don't change their physical records like they used to do in the 90's when playing multiple tracks. I used to be a vinyl dj and am thinking of getting back into the mix by purchasing dj controllers connected to a laptop, to update my knowledge. So from my understanding what I took from this video is I can retain my SL 1200's and mixer and just buy Serato software and DVS which is the analouge to digital music converter, correct?
@notectrl
@notectrl 6 лет назад
Realatable story here. Bought a pair of cdj's 9 years ago after moving far far north, where regularly purchasing records would have been problematic. Got tired of burning cd's and evaluated upgrading the players last year, retrieved my 1200's and got myself a TTM57 and ScratchLive instead. Smartest choice i ever done. The thing is absolute dope, as having the Serato interface box built-in allows you to browse the music and do basically everything without ever touching the damn pc, you can even skip looking at it altogether if you setup things in a certain way and you mix entirely by ear and hand without need for key, waveforms and bpm counters. Add to all this the fact that the mixer itself is bomb, as far quality goes for both build and sound quality. Practical layout, excellent magnetic faders, and not too much blinking from the artifact. 8.5/10 since the eq's are good but shoud have been just as awesome as everything else instead. Just ask if there's something more you wonder

That explained so much! I went to see Grand Master Flash and Mix Master Mike live recently. I couldn't figure out why they never changed records, but this totally explains it. I can see why purists might have an issue with this, but to be honest it didn't affect my enjoyment of either gig.

So would this be a great way to learn to mix vinyl without having to hunt down crates of vinyl to start?
@notectrl
@notectrl 6 лет назад
Yupp, absolutely. Remember to use Absolute mode if that's your goal, this way you won't have access to hotcues and all that, and will be forced to pick the cue point manually every time. Avoid looking at the pc screen entirely if you want to go the radical way, with no aids in the form of tracks' waveforms, bpm and tonality. Have fun !

I'm seriously contemplating getting this. I'm not into scratching, I bought my turntables to mix and enjoy my collection of progressive house classics, but I certainly would like to get more recent music on vinyl. Only problem is that many tracks were never released on vinyl. I checked and only about 20% of my digital collection (post 2010) was released on vinyl as well and many of those are hard to get or very expensive. There's so many awesome tracks that never made it onto vinyl. This would be the perfect alternative. Especially since a pair of xdj's would cost at least another €1400... Thanks for the video, good explanation. Only thing I'm missing is how to set it up with the convertors etc. But I will definitely check this out.

Question. Do time code records have “sides”? Like if one side is worn, can you flip it over and use the other side? Mostly it’s a question I’ve always had about DVS.
@airfixx_8952
@airfixx_8952 2 года назад
As far as Serato goes; one side has 10min play length, the other 15min which means the music on the latter will be more condensed (think LP vs 12" in analogue vinyl terms).... Generally; the 10mins will be better for turntable manipulation, but there may be times when where the other side will be necessary (eg. playing a rack that is longer than 10 minutes or if you've designed your own scratch tools 'record').

You can actually record/convert your existing vinyls into your computer and play them with these DVS. You sill got those crackles/clicks and at the same time enjoying the convenience of accessing and storing your records. This technology is a compromise for those who can't get over their turntables just like me.

I learnt to DJ on Technics 1210,s and are recently getting back into DJing. People tell me that the skills I collected when learning are of no importance now. The Beat matching and many other things are done for you. Its always in my head that if you dont understand the fundamentals of BPM matching and how to drop tracks in, when playing , and where to drop them , its like building a house. You need solid foundations or no matter how good the house appears its going to suffer at some point, or are other DJ;s right and the old knowledge I have is of no importance now. I have a lap top with virtual DJ but dont know if to get new decks and Digital Vinyl or just a controller as I have all my old vinyl in digital now anyway. What would you suggest? Respect!

Thank you for this. A decade ago, I use to scratch with traditional turntables, just for fun, and eventually took time away from it. I've been wanting to get back into it, but with a more modern setup, and I was wondering if there was a digital way to do so, while keeping a traditional setup (as opposed to CD's). @powerlineside

There are softwares that can add crackles to digital music so they can still sound classic. I had used pinnacle studio before and though this is a video editing software but there is an option to make the background music sound like a vinyl by adding clicks and crackles to the track to make the subject a nostalgia. The DVS may not be able to add them but you can edit your music files to have those noises.

Easy Buckets master it on vinyl maybe somewhat easier to do it on a controller but then there so much extra stuff the controller can do it's you thinking, just like me as an old school DJ, you probably not even going to use most of the tech but when you slowly but surely learn some and then some more you're going to kick yourself for not learning at all in the first place.

So let me get this straight - If I upgrade my Serato to include DVS and hook up my turntable to my compatible controller, can I put any record I own on that turntable and hear that record being player? Or do I have to buy a special vinyl record that makes that buzzing noise in this video, and I digitally choose which song I want to play on the computer? The video makes it seem like it doesn't matter which vinyl record you play on the turntable, the actual song is selected dgitally on the computer. Hence, never having to remove the record to switch tracks.

Hi everybody, I would need some help, as I'm not familiar with this technology. So far, I have only 2 turntables (Technics 1200) as play source and an analogue mixer (Rane Empath, not DVS compatible) that fulfil my needs. I'm now willing to enter DVS world. For that, all I need is an external sound card, a DVS vinyl and licence with Serato, traktor etc... Here are my concerns: 1 - How can I tell my computer/turntables if I want to play a real vinyl or a DVS vinyl ? (Will I have to make the selection back and forth on the rear panel of the soundcard all along my set ?) 2- Once everything is connected. When I will play a real vinyl, will the sound be digital from the sound card or analogue by bypassing it ? Thanks

Could this be done digitally with timecoded compact discs?
@notectrl
@notectrl 6 лет назад
yes they do exist, but why bothering ? the point in this is to stick with the feeling of an actual turntable, while playing digital files, if your control surface is a cd player ( aka jog wheel instead of a spinning record to manipulate the sound with ) i suggest you let it play the actual sound as well, without extra steps ( and a tiny bit of latency )

you the man bruh! I am a newbie in the DJ field.. and I am opting to use DVS but dont really know how it works and... but after watching your video... man I am surely going for TURNTABLES and DVS! good job bro!

I plan to buy a DVS system but I'm a little bit confused with the choices.. Most of the solutions I found cost the same price.. I have difficulties to choose between Denon DJ DS1 with Serato or Pioneer Interface 2 with Rekordbox. I'm not a pro DJ, I only use at "home for fun". Compatibility with club set up isn't an issu for me as I don't use it elswhere.. Both costs 300€... Any advice ?

Thanks, I thought the turntable gave information. But it's the Vinyl that does it and the computer does it. This is great because the hardware in DJ hardware is very limited compared to computers. Also because updating DJ hardware software-wise is more difficult instead of clicking "Next, Next, Install".

I'm sorry and trust me I rate SB actually to the point that I don't know who I rate more Qbert or scratch...... but I'm sorry there is an ART to digging in the crates, you can't impeed the wheels of progress but I can't help thinking this is a step in the wrong direction

The Art of digging in crates changes, like when we stopped making motorcycles with a kick start. This is no different. Kick starts are cool and can be useful but when the other technology got so advanced that producing a kick start for every motorcycle was a waste of money that could get passed along to the consumer. Same here: DVS is life after the Kick start of actual Vinyl records became more costly then the Return on their investment. The cost of an entire album for one track is not efficient. Lots of hold dirty bikers love kick starters...good for them. I do too every now and then..but my knee doesn't like that much trauma to start a motorcycle and my back doesn't like that much trauma to lift a box of records and just like that...poof The Rebirth of Indian Motorcycles without kick starters and in the DJ world Digital Vinyl Systems. Not your direction...but like dude said, it has kept turn tables alive. Long live the Art of crate digging, Kick starting, and DVS.

Came across a reference to "control vinyl" on Sweetwater, had no idea what it was, now I know! 🧠 Such cool technology. I don't need it, I can't afford it, but I want it. 🤩 Ha. Thanks for making this.

can anyone help me out...what Daw should i need to record sounds play them through Dvs to scratch them up make some patterns, to then be played/recorded back into a daw to re record so that is what would be your beats, I have a rane ttm56 mixer- technic 1200s, would it basically have to be 32 bit ableton live bridged to like a serato ssl3-4 box?? or can traktor be linked to Reason or something can't seem to figure this out, would love it to be done through Reason, had Ableton for a while now but actually miss Reason, cheers if anyones responses

First I'd like to say thank you for creating these videos. I'm an old school DJ. I use to love creating my own remixes using vinyl and knowing where the pitch control went. I'm also expert in blending. Well I sold my equipment 10 years ago because of financial reasons and I was giving it up for good. Well I got the urge to spin again so I bought 1200s, Pioneer mixer and new cartridges and needles. Next up is Serato and a lap top then I want to sell my mixer and get a Rane. Now I never used a mixer with all the sample buttons. Could you do a video teaching how to use them and how to use them when your rocking a party? Thx and I really enjoyed your videos. Btw I was never nice on the cut but now I'm dedicating time into becoming a better scratcher and transforms. Any cuts you be willing to teach would be grest. I saw the chirp scratch video.btw I never sold my vinyl.

I'm 100% sure that scratching vinyl sounds so much better than scratching digital files on DVS...
