To me… DSE is far more bothersome than blooming. The new LED TVs have gotten so good at minimizing blooming that it is not all that noticeable in most scenarios. However, DSE varies unit by unit and is a total crapshoot. Unfortunately, some manufacturers don’t even see this as an issue even on their high end models.

Man TV reviews are so good and annoying because when you learn TV defects you can't see it. I can't stop looking for blooming , I get irritated by panels with grey blacks or no local dimming in non OLED tvs. Just wish my bank account could match my ideal TV choice 😂😂. Now dirty screen effect 😂

Maybe some additional information on what causes the DSE. There are three things that make DSE: 1. Uneven backlight distribution 2. Uneven pressure on/in the panel itself 3. Uneven space distribution between the RGB layer and difusser from the backlight - The first one can be solved by replacing the backlight system, the uneven bright LED's are causing different light distribution and therefore causing DSE - The second one is solvable if the pressure lays on the panel itself, that's why some people suggest to "loosen up" the back of the TV. If the pressure lays in the panel itself than it's a manufacturing failure and can't be solved. - The third one is tricky. It's caused by either touching the RGB layer and backlight difusser or the surface of the difusser is not even. If the layers touch each other you get lighter white spots but if they don't and the difusser is uneven you can get dark spots. The RGB layer and the difusser have to have a gap between them and the defusser also has to be as even as possible so replacing the difusser solves the problem for the most time.

I lost the panel lottery on a TCL I ended up returning. It was such a hassle to box everything back up that I decided to take a different route altogether. For Christmas I got my son a Hisense U8G and lost again; it was thru Amazon. I decided to give it another shot locally since the TV itself was very good, and got one that was almost perfect. Very happy overall. I do believe that manufacturers ship units with DSE because not enough people notice it or care about DSE. I am positive that if they had enough returns, they would not sell them in the first place; it costs a lot of money to process a customer return item.

As a golf fan, DSE drove me nuts on my last TV. It was very noticeable when watching golf. Luckily, my LG CX 77 doesn't have that issue. Of course, my old TV is still in use, just not as my primary, so it isn't as bothersome.

Just tried the test images on my Sony 77A80J, and it looks quite good. Not perfect mind you, but nevertheless quite good. That being said, many of us who regularly view these expensive large display panel televisions don’t have perfect vision anyway. For example, I have myopia and astigmatism, corrected with lenses, but still have significant issues with vitreous floaters… which can appear like “migrating dirty screen effect” at times! I guess my point is that nothing is perfect… And even if the screen were absolutely perfect, our eyes may not be capable of perceiving that perfection. As my dear old dad used to say, “it would look good to a blind man“.

It's on my 55 inch 2019 TCL 6-series Roku tv. I would call it moderate/acceptable DSE. When watching a movie I rarely notice it, maybe for a brief scene or two (camera pans across an overcast sky for example), or not at all just as likely. Fortunately I don't watch hockey or close ups of golf greens. I knew about this before I bought my TCL and thought a fair tradeoff for the great price and overall quality of the image. After over two years still very pleased with the purchase.

Thanks Caleb. I can’t say I wasn’t warned. NOW I know I should’ve skipped this video. But it’s early on a Saturday morning, so I decided to played your “can you see the dirty screen” game. The first few were not very obvious. Then I noticed a spot on one of a colored panels! Great, I think. I‘ve learned something important, I think. I’m going to be ready to check out the screen on a new TV I hope to buy later this year! I think. For several fleeting moments, I’m very proud of myself! The next color flashed on screen and the “pinkish” mark was still there. Hummm. A the third test panel arrived, and the very light, pinkish hue is still there. WHAT! Calm down. I’ll just clean the screen and it will disappear. Nope. I’ll never look at this iPad mini the same way ever again. The “pink splash” will always be on the screen. Right now, it’s on the keyboard while I type. It’s on and between the top corners of the h and j keys as I type this note. It hasn’t bleed on the “u” key, yet. But I’m sure I’ll know the moment it does, because I seriously don’t think I’ll ever “unsee” this again! I swear it wasn’t there yesterday, or earlier today when I watched subwoofer reviews on RU-vid. I’m resigning myself to months or years of a growing pinkish hue splash, emanating from my iPad mini. 🤦‍♂️. I suppose my only real hope is Apple announcing an unanticipated upgraded iPad mini (@ a super low price) during next week’s Apple Spring event. Right. Pigs will fly first. Caleb, can you do a video of how to put toothpaste back into the tube? Yea, I know. That’s not gonna happen either.

I’m shopping for a tv now after 14 years with a Panasonic plasma. I bought an oled because reviewers go on about their black levels much like what they said about plasma’s back in the day. I remember being blown away by my plasma when I set it up. Well….I don’t like the picture on the Sony oled I bought. Even after adjusting the settings the display is just too dim. It looks horrible to my eyes. It’s going back to the store. Now researching mini led’s I come upon this issue. At this point I’m considering buying an Hisense mini led for half the price of the oled and hoping better technology is on the way.

Bought a Sharp 60" TV and became aware of this issue the very first day, after a couple of days I was certain it's the TV (and not me). Following advice on one site (which described this problem as clouding), I did manage to gently and I mean gently massage the screen with a very soft cloth to even it out. As you say, I couldn't un-see it, but also realized there was vertical banding. Over the next few days the back light started clumping in other areas. So I returned the TV. In doing research to find a TV that was less likely to exhibit this problem, the Sony X90J came highly recommended. I did more research on this TV and that's how I found your channel, I watched all the videos you made for this TV (and subscribed). I came away confident that the Sony was a good buy, and I am very happy with it. It it does have DSE, I haven't seen it yet (had the TV for a month) so I think I got a good panel. Thanks for your channel and keep up the good work.

So glad to see this video. I had these dark splotches (didn’t know the name for the effect) on the upper corner of my Sony X95. Caught it just a month or so before my Best Buy Geek Squad warranty ran out. Best Buy replaced the TV (with a refund which allowed me to upgrade since prices had dropped) and in so many words told me my effected TV would be disposed, and I was not liable to return in. Since the splotches weren’t horrible, and hardly noticeable unless bright scenes play, I basically just scored an extra 65” X95 for my gym.

I was worried about OLED burn in as I use it for a monitor (but from the bed). So I bought a LED panel one from Philips, and it has slight DSE, but you really gotta look for it. Overall satisfied and accepted that there is no perfect TV, I'll be more aware next time. I just don't know how realistic it is to return a biga$$ TV, I mean the unboxing an installation was such a chore in itself. I don't necessarily want to minmax it and pull the lever to get another one, and another... So many things could go wrong. If I deem it acceptable might as well just stick with it. I mean I did minmax my monitor but that's different and is used for work, I was hunting for bad pixels and there was in-store unboxing of several until we found a perfect one. That's a bit unreasonable for TVs (store employees will surely hate you for making them unbox and exhaustively several TVs that look perfectly good for the average person but you are nitpicking about a bad pixel you will not even see from over 1.5-2m distance or a DSE you didn't know exists before this video :D). Or with infinie money order 10 different models, test them all in your home, then return the bottom 9 with a courier? They'll just love you. Realize TVs used to be black and white and bulky in terms of depth. Nowadays they are far more brilliant than most people's eyes have ever seen. After seeing how crappy TVs are set up in hotels, and at non-TV-enthusiastic people's homes, with wtf/default settings... the fact that we care even a tiny bit about picture quality to notice flaws means we pay attention and are already better off. If it's not that annoying, just be happy with it :)

I think that would be hard to determine without a full almost, camera looking at the screen. Like a calibration. Hey Caleb, i know you don’t comment or make videos on lower tier TVs but i thought i’d give it a shot. Can you give your recommendation (only for picture quality) between LG Nano85 and Samsung Qled 77. I’m thinking 75” for both and gaming isn’t a must. A comment of which TV you think is best would suffice. Thank you!

Oof. Retailers are going to love you for all the returns this could cause from people nit picking their TV with test patterns. If you don't see this in normal content I wouldn't worry about it. There is rarely a perfect TV when mass manufacturing.

Problems due to age can be the LEDs going bad. This is repairable, though substantial. Symptoms include dark areas all the time, also they can go purple or lose lenses, looking like there's a light inside. NON-backlight problems include LCD "the glass" aging which might look dark and bruised in areas only on dark scenes.

My parrents had an LG LED LCD TV and it had a big amout of DSE. They didn't notice it untill I said it. While they had noticed the shadows they tought it was was something the TV shows added in. So we bought a new Hisense QLED TV and could emidialty noitice the diffrence. It was huge. I found out that the DSE was a common problem for the LG model we had. It was caused by some of the LEDs in the backlight being blue

Thanks so much found your video helpful however when buying my new 4K tv in 2019 I knew nothing of this DSE or blooming. The blooming was so bad when watching anything with a lot of dark scenes I couldn’t watch it. I would see white lines dance across the screen. Now idk what happened now the blooming seems to be gone. I have a LG 55 inch Nano Cell 4K tv I got in 2019.

We just bought an LG 65 inch QNED90 from Best Buy. Put the Stanley Cup game on and the DSE was terrible. Vertical lines every 4 inches. It was driving me crazy, but my husband couldn't see it at all. I turned it off and went and watched on our old Samsung 48" and realized that tv had a lot of graying issues too, but I just never saw it. Went back to BB today and bought a Samsung 55" Q70A. We realized that the 65" was just too big for our living room and I hope this one doesn't have the DSE. We always liked Samsung and should have went with it to begin with. Thanks for the great video. I couldn't unsee it, so back it goes.

We just purchased a 55” Sony X89J (UK equivalent to the X85J) and it’s got DSE all along the top and bottom edges as well as vignetting in all 4 corners. The Vignetting doesn’t really bother me as it’s not noticeable on anything but test slides but the DSE along the top and bottom is visible when watching sports. The retailer won’t take it back as DSE does not constitute a fault and Sony have looked and said it’s within tolerance. I’ve had issues in the past with other brands and is why I went with Sony for my last tv and this current one. My previous tv a 55” X70E had no DSE at all this X89J does so I won’t take a Sony TV next time as it seems their quality control has taken a slide. I don’t want to start returning TV’s and playing the panel lottery as this one is just tolerable and the next one could and most likely will be worse. Instead I will just change TV brands next time.

Ok, did the test on a 7 yo Samsung 55” TV and while I saw very slight vignetting and a band near the bottom in your tests, I must say, I have never noticed it in normal usage. And this was not an overpriced TV of its vintage.

I have a Sony FALD set, 55” and fortunately it’s pretty clean. It does have some DSE but I’ve seen a lot worse so accepted it. It’s a few years old now though and I’d like something bigger, but honestly I dread buying a new tv as I seem to be sensitive to all these panel issues, and sending them back is such a pain. I’m planning to make my next “tv” a DLP projector with 3 laser / led light source. After research this seems to be the best tech available at the moment to give a large clean high resolution picture. Ironic really since the tech is decades older than anything in a modern tv.

FACT: And that is why we should NOT be spending lots of money on these "High-End" TV sets that will just ultimately end up getting "Dirty Screen Effect" that cannot be repaired. It is better to just buy a cheap TV and presume it will need to be replaced after a relatively short period of time. It is a shame the TV manufacturers today have such poor quality standards for production.

My display just recently starting acting up with this...been good for many years, so guess I was lucky. I use my TV as gaming monitor with my PC. I'm sure that the high backlight settings I used caused problems seeing menu text on left side. First there was the flashing, forcing me to turn the backlight down to no higher than 61. Then, on my computer, under settings, display, personalization, I switched to Black Background and HIGH CONTRAST Setting which HELPED A LOT! I guess this setting is typically used for vision impaired people. Tremendous improvement. My TV is a Vizio E55-UDO LED 4K my next will be and OLED 55 inch LG probably.

I noticed some severe DSE (horizontal banding) on my 55" Hisense U7QF (H8G equivalent panel I believe). I tried to exchange it within a week of purchase, but the store I bought it wouldn't budge. So I'm stuck with it now. I don't see it as much in regular content, but since buying an Xbox I notice it a lot on the Xbox menus. It's also very apparent in vertical panning shots. The TV is really bright for its price class though, so HDR generally looks great, so for the price I guess I can't have everything.

The 85" qn800a Only had a faint DSE spot. But was suffering from an audio issue. The QN90A in the living room was bad it had DSE throughout the screen, But both are perfect now... 🤞🏾🤞🏾 If I would've gotten another bad screen I was switching to Oleds for sure.

What makes me mad with DSE is that it seems to be getting worse. I watch TVs from ten years ago that have no issues. Now, you can’t find a set that doesn’t have it and I am talking flagship models. It angers me when I get a QN90A that has it but then I go to a sports bar or the school I teach at that both have cheaper tv panels mounted to the wall and they have no noticeable issues.

Unless you see some serious issue with your screen while watching normal content. I wouldn’t go looking for DSE. Before everyone jump me, here is my main reasoning. A lot of time, you won’t even notice DSE if it’s not bad. But if you look for it, and even if it’s not even severe, a lot of time you can’t unsee it.

Most if not all "DSE" that develop on LCD screens with time in form of uneven darker areas is just dust on the reflector that made it's way inside due to the movement of hot air from leds and can be fixed by partially disassembling the TV and simple cleaning. Too bad lazy servicemen often don't want to do it, but aside from need to carefully remove LCD panel (which is not that terribly fragile btw) - it's not very hard. But in my experience - just about every LCD TV will start to collect visible patches of dust inside in about 2-3 years max. Irony of the situation is that OLEDs are free from this problem but suffer from burn in with very similar effect...

I just bought an LG UP7750 and it shows DSE in the form of vertical bands. What's interesting, though, is that the DSE pattern looks substantially more pronounced and less regular when showing the WebOS splash screen as it turns on. To me, this is showing the real nature of DSE. DSE is inevitable due to panel irregularities as mentioned in the video, but manufacturers calibrate the displays at manufacture by measuring the irregularities and correcting them in software. I believe when a consumer sees DSE in their TVs, it's a defect in calibration. It should be possible to recalibrate the screens to compensate for any residual DSE - I wish tech service providers offered that service, because it would completely fix this problem. That's assuming accurate calibration is possible, maybe the tools to precisely calibrate DSE out are out of reach for budget TVs. Anyway... food for thought.
@klaussfreire
@klaussfreire 2 года назад
I just calibrated out the DSE in my TV with my smartphone and a bit of software. Sadly it only applies to my PC (where I can apply the necessary corrections). It's a shame - no, it's apalling - that it's not provided by the TV's firmware. It's such an essential and simple luminance calibration step...
