What is Economic Anthropology? In today's video, we will be explaining, discussing, and defining economic anthropology. Who am I? My name is Alivia Brown and I am a recent UCLA Anthropology graduate on a mission to find a career that I love. My major does not have a straight forward "path" as many would say and I am not only determined to prove that I can be successful in my major but also demonstrate my ability to find a career that brings me joy. Um, am I blind or was there no mention of self-domestication? Whether you say we domesticated ourselves, or we were domesticated by memes/culture shouldn't matter. Keep accumulating your models of what's going on.... You're headed on tye right direction, but I'd strongly recommend Matt Ridley and Joseph Henrich, such as The Red Queen and The Secret of Pur Success, and not least: The ToK system by Gregg Henriques, including the justification hypothesis...

Why would our genes select such white sclera as ours? Why would those with less-white sclera in our past not get as much sex? Why do dogs and horses have more than wolves and zebra?

I'm a double major in Anthropology and Economics and you did a great job! So much of what we consider to be the economy is actually very limited to western perceptions of legality and finance, and this perception often cannot fully see the extent of many economies, especially in the Global South. Economics focuses on creating models that often erase nuance, while anthropology is often quite focused on nuance and thus can make the study of systems quite complicated. It's hard to reconcile the two fields but ultimately, economics definitely can benefit from anthropology!

I would not use the term "Global South" if I were you, it's yet another phrase devised by powers at large to divide humanity up even further, much like 1st world and 3rd world. And in terms of geography, Australia and New Zealand are pretty south, so are they also considered the Global South?

@@taimalik1110 While I agree that the term can be a misnomer, I think it is important to recognize socio-economic differences between various countries, especially in a field such as economic anthropology (in response to the idea of the term "dividing up humanity even further"). By refusing to acknowledge differences, we are unable to see these countries and their needs in their entirety.

I actually think it's the opposite. Of course I'm coming from an economics background, but I don't think the definition of economics is even remotely close to what we study. Even when I did my undergrad studies we had entire topics on things like non-monetary evaluation, fair allocation, etc. I still think economics can learn from anthropology, but much of what I've read from anthropologists doesn't really get passed economics 101 so their critics are usually just on really basic economic models, that even economists say are a stepping stool for more complicated models.

What is a double specialization in anthropology and economics like? I am from Peru, I studied anthropology, I would like to specialize in economic anthropology issues and rural economics issues.

Great topic Alivia! I was thinking about the Kula since you introduced the topic and I’m glad you used it as an example. Economic anthropology also relates to kinship, religion, gender norms, which makes it a very exciting and interdisciplinary topic. Another example than comes into my mind is the gift exchange theory of Levi Strauss, later commented and critiqued by Rosaldo and Gayle Rubin among others

Made me think on how symbolic money in general has been, I mean, you cant eat paper money, or gold or silver coins, so it is just a symbol of the value actual goods like food or clothing have. Nice video! 😁

Just in addition: Marcel Mauss used Malinowski's case-study of the Kula trade in developing his theory of the gift in non-industrial societies (archaic societies as Mauss called them). Just as Mauss used other anthropological studies about the potlach and other forms of gift exchange. He did not do any fieldwork in the Trobiander islands himself. As far as I know. But correct me when I am wrong! And thnak you for the wonderful video :)

In my economics course, we defined it as how "society meets endless needs". I often debate people on neoclassical approaches to economics and neoliberalism. These are obviously huge academic debates but I would describe myself as someone who has a more heterodox approach.

Hello my friend, it was pretty much a serendipitous moment when I chanced upon your channel, and let me tell you, I am digging it :p So, I am a construction engineer (architectural/structural engineering), and we do lots of digging in the field. But the question that always comes to me is what past anthropological and archaeological remains are we disturbing when we build new structures? Would you please be able to make a video about anthropology/archeology in the context of architecture and civil engineering? I think there is definitely an application of your field of study in construction. Thanks!

As far as I can tell, economic anthropology as a sub-field of anthropology is still not generally recognized. Can you recommend a reputable economic anthropology PhD program in the United States or in the United Kingdom?
