Learn how to start English paper piecing! This versatile technique applies to hand and machine quilting alike. Ready to start your EPP project? Check out more of Helen's lessons here --- craftsy.me/2cHhy0O
This is a clip from Helen Stubbings' online class, Quick & Easy English Paper Piecing. Why take this class? Students rave:
"I have tried several EPP projects in the past but never finished them because I felt rather bumbling about it. I was using cardstock and hand-basting stitching around the perimeter before attaching hexagons together. This class has really opened my eyes and I actually feel excited about attempting an EPP project now! I have learned a handful of new techniques already ... and it is so wonderful to see Helen walk me through not only how to do this by hand, but how to successfully do it by machine also if you're in a hurry. I can't recommend this class enough!"

Buying paper templates is great, and I do recommend it. But I'm also gonna put in a word for cutting your own templates. The beauty is that you can make it out of anything you want, and that's important for a couple reasons. I like the weight of glossy advertisements that come in junk mail or newspapers. What's great is that sometimes you get pictures of really cute stuff framed in these little paper hexies, and that gives a spice to the back side of your work, like little pictures of food, or people's faces, or bicycles, or whatever. Sometimes you'll get a date in there, and that helps date your quilt. The thing is, to be very realistic, a lot of us start making hexies and it may take years before a quilt gets finished, if ever. It's nice to have something cool to look at on the back of the hexies until such time as the quilt actually gets done. Having interesting bits of paper showing tiny snippets of life makes me feel like the work has a more historical setting to it. Seeing a few words here and there can look beautifully poetic. It's an opportunity for a rather ephemeral sort of accidental art, to allow the papers that you sew with to be something a bit more interesting than just plain white templates.

fiskars Hexie x-L SQueeze Punch are great to recycle all your junk mail postcard type paper into hundreds of hexies. Five-Inch square Charm packs can be cut easily into 2 1/2 squares. 1 five-inch charm will make 4 squares to cover 4 hexie shapes. You can trim the corners later. ALSO, if you punch a small circular hole or heart in the center of the punched paper it will help easily release the paper/recycled postcard when it's times to pull out the hexie paper template with a small cuticle type stick

I'm just learning this technique, but I am mesmerized by the large quilt on your wall. It is beyond stunning. Wow.

I create my own templates using Microsoft Word. Once cut, I baste the fabric so that I can just pluck the paper out after stitching the hexies together and reuse the template. I can make any size and any number very easily. I love the slow, peaceful and quiet of EPP.

I made a double bed quilt like this. Then skipped the paper and it worked even better with that I made an 8ft square double sided one. All hand sown . I got stamps from the patchwork stamp company. You just then sew on the dotted line

I've always been interested in this but always felt that not having a sewing machine I just gave up the idea as well as I'm not very good at hand sewing, ok well not good enough I have always wanted to make a quilt with puzzle pieces. Is it possible to make puzzle shapes in quilting love the video by the way, and thank you for sharing.

Yes. But I think it would be easier done as applique, not English paper piecing.

Very pretty‼️ but...What do you do with the paper used in those shapes? Do you have to remove them after you're done? I'm curious to know what happens when you wash these pieces‼️ This is the first time i hear about this kind of work!

@solatiumz

I did this type of patchwork, you do not remove the paper until you are attaching the patchwork to a backing sheet or the like, then if you remove the stitches carefully you should be able to re use the paper.
@pinksnoopydancer
@pinksnoopydancer 2 года назад
She does talk about that. You remove the papers and finish the back of the quilt. Depending on your papers, you can reuse.

Cotton will be the easiest to work with by far, but you can use whatever you want. Just keep in mind that fabrics like satin, silk, and chiffon are very slippery and hard to keep aligned when sewing.

If you know someone that works in an office, they will tell you that a ridiculous amount of paper is wasted from printing and photocopying, you could ask them to bring some home for you to use in patchwork.
