What is Flow Theory? What does this mean for our students?

This video is about Flow Theory.
If we want students to be fully empowered to own the creative process, we need to understand what it means for students to reach a state of creative flow.
The History of the Theory
Although the idea of Flow has existed for thousands of years, Flow Theory began in the 1970’s and 80’s when Hungarian psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi became fascinated by artists who were so lost in their creative work that they would lose track of time and even ignore food, water, and sleep.
Through his research, he noticed a similar experience with scientists, athletes, and authors. It was a state of hyper-focus and complete engagement that he described as “optimal experience.”
The Basics of the Theory
Researchers do not have one single working model for flow theory. However, the following are five factors identified by Csikszentmihalyi and Nakumara as vital for achieving a state of flow.
#1: It needs to be a task that you find intrinsically rewarding
#2: You need clear goals and a sense of progress
#3: The task needs clear and immediate feedback
#4: The challenge must match the perceived skills. This requires a sense of personal control or agency over the task.
In 1987, Massimini, Csíkszentmihályi and Carli published the 8-channel model of flow shown here. Note that if a task is too easy, you might experience apathy or boredom but if a task seems too hard, you’ll be anxious.
#5: Requires intense focus on the present moment
What Does This Look Like in School?
Tap into intrinsic motivation
Embrace student choice and agency.
Provide the right scaffolding so that students can match the challenge level to their ability levels.
Minimize distractions so that students can focus on their learning. Change the pacing so that you have fewer tasks and more time. Here, students can enter into a state of what Cal Newport calls “deep work.”
Help students learn to monitor their own progress through metacognition. Teach them to set goals, analyze tasks, figure out what they need to do, make adjustments in the moment, and reflect on their progress in the end.

I get that from books, I called it "reading myself paper-thin" because I’d ignore my needs and once I was done with a book, I would be hungry and tired and, kinda, barely there, as if my book was more real, than reality.

I think the state of flow is the waking moment of enlightenment - being present at the now. One can experience “the flow” at any moment and task such as cleaning toilet as long as you are being present at the now, the moment when time (past and future) ceases to exist.

I saw someone comment on being exhausted after 20-30 minutes, that isn't flow, that's just work, study. I'm a musician, and I wrote and recorded an entire song in a day, I don't know how much time it actually took but perhaps 12-14 hours (not just on a guitar, I'm talking EVERY instrument, including drums). I barely ate that day, only took breaks to use the bathroom, and that's an example I have of really understanding flow. The music just seemed to pour out of me, it's like I instinctively knew what I wanted to do. That may not sound too foreign to some people, but for me, it was intense. I love listening to that song, and although I want to re-record it for better quality, it was a defining moment (day) for me.

A simple search on Google shows that it is a thing. I was formerly unaware of that. It is a very, very interesting concept. How much and how fast can we improve our cognition, when we can look at it objectively? Very fast, of course! I will go so far here as to add that I am a uniquely intelligent person who has increased my own intelligence through sheer desire and force of will. So I know a bit about what to do to increase cognitive power.

For students to be in the state of flow, they need time, choice and authentic applications. We can't do this in 55 minute chunks of lecture. We need to think about changes to education as we know it. Project based learning, collaboration, integrated lessons and flexible time frames are more likely to help students get into the "zone".

The only issue is that transient hyperfrontality suppresses the prefrontal cortex and the person in flow cannot use "explicit functions." So, things like awareness of time does not exist (time management), and the inner critic is turned off. For example, assignments should not have the typical due dates. That sort of structure needs to be reassessed.

"Metacognition." Um...I love that word/term. Is that a 'thing' or did this speaker coin that term? So, metacognition, hmm? Something overriding that directs normal cognition? Is it simply reviewing one's own cognitive ability to refine and empower it? Please, elucidate what you mean by 'metacognition.' As I think you would agree: cognition is EVERYTHING. We need more of it. So how about that route to metacognition?
@Maritotten
@Maritotten Год назад
Metacognition is an actual term, “Metacognition is, put simply, thinking about one’s thinking. more precisely, it refers to the processes used to plan, monitor, and assess one’s understanding and performance. metacognition includes a critical awareness of a) one’s thinking and learning and b) oneself as a thinker and learner.” You can find lots of information on this subject online.

3:20 is it the skill level of the protagonist on the x-axis? (or the skill level needed for the task? which I guess is the same as "challenge level" or y-axis...) your notes say: "In 1987, Massimini, Csíkszentmihályi and Carli published the 8-channel model of flow shown here. Note that if a task is too easy, you might experience apathy or boredom but if a task seems too hard, you’ll be anxious. "

If your skill's level is low and the challenge level is also low but in line with your skills, why there is apathy? shouldn't be a flow as well? Or everything will be perceived differently so that the flow it is still with high challenge and high skills?

Quick Motivational Procedure that you never heard of involving the management of positive affect, or 'flow' experience. Want to make popcorn taste better? Then eat popcorn while watching an exciting movie. We ‘know’ this non-consciously when we buy the stuff for the latest Tom Cruise movie. The reason? Opioid-dopamine interactions. Opioid and dopamine systems are comprised of clusters of brain cells or ‘nuclei’ in the midbrain that adjoin each other. Opioids cause pleasure or ‘liking’ and are activated in sex, eating, resting, etc., and dopamine systems cause attentive arousal or ‘wanting’ and are activated by the perception or anticipation of novel and positive means-end expectancies, like that Tom Cruise movie. These two systems interact, thus if we do something pleasurable, we get aroused, and if we get aroused our pleasures increase. This also happens when we follow a resting protocol such as mindfulness, and alternate it with the anticipation and performance of meaningful behavior which may be defined by the virtual perception of novel and positive mean-end expectancies (writing your great novel or just making the bed). So just get rested and alternate with doing meaningful behavior, and you will have such ‘flow’ like experiences and find that motivation becomes pleasurable, and thus much easier. More on this on the web site of the distinguished affective neuroscientist Kent Berridge of the University of Michigan who thought much of this stuff up, all of whose research articles are available for download. A more formal explanation based on Berridge’s research (or a neurologically grounded theory of learning) is provided on pp. 5-6, and 44-51 in a little open-source book on the psychology of rest linked below. (‘flow’ discussed on pp.82-87) www.scribd.com/doc/284056765/The-Book-of-Rest-The-Odd-Psychology-of-Doing-Nothing Berridge article on the Neuroscience of Happiness - from Scientific American sites.lsa.umich.edu/berridge-lab/wp-content/uploads/sites/743/2019/10/Kringelbach-Berridge-2012-Joyful-mind-Sci-Am.pdf Berridge Lab, University of Michigan sites.lsa.umich.edu/berridge-lab/
