I think he said you're not a native speaker because you speak slowly, very carefully and with perfect diction to make it easier for your students to understand. Maybe what you can't appreciate is how important it is for us students to hear you speak, about any subject. Yes, you are Canadian, lol, like that song,"Alberta bound" (Paul Brandt). Thank you for your effort in helping us, I have improved a lot.

I've always known that you're a native and what made me a follower was precisely the clear and calm way you pronounce the words and that's great for me, because I have great difficulty listening and concentrating, understanding what the natives say. Maybe the colleague is more used to English spoken more quickly, in a jumble...Jesus!!! I can't concentrate! 😄 My mother tongue is Portuguese and yes, we can see when someone of Spanish origin speaks Portuguese. The accent is strong. In fact, here in Brazil, we know when a person is not from our state, because of the different accents in our country. And as you said, each of these people will have an accent, a characteristic, when they speak English. Thank you for your interactive and creative videos.

I'm not going to 'hold my peace!' -I learned this phrase from you. Your teaching English way is original, unique! You are a person who deals with topics from your own points of view, something that most do not dare to do. I don't know what the problem is with the person who sent that message, but what is clear is that he doesn't know how to appreciate the efforts of others!

English is my passion and I've been learning it for the last twenty years. Many people think I'm a native Brit because I've mastered the intricacies of the British accent, it's hard work but it's doable. However, I still make occasional grammar mistakes and use wrong vowels (sometimes). On a side note what I've also learnt is the skill of telling a native speaker and a non native speaker apart and bro you are the former for sure and you're a good man too

Hey! For me, fluency means that you're able to speak a language very well without thinking about the words, vocabulary... etc, and this can be done by native English speakers or English learners that have learned the language for a long time. I'm native Arabic speaker and I'm also French speaker but like you said in your video, I don't know all the vocabulary, grammar, spelling...etc of these languages. Finally, I knew, at the beginning, that you were a native English speaker even if I was beginner. Take care and stay safe and healthy!

For me being a native speaker means to be able to speak fluently the language or languages of the country you were raised in. Why do I say " raised in", because you can come to a country as a baby and grew up in that country speaking the languages of that country and still you'll sound like a person who was born in that country. Why did I say "fluently" too, because fluency is just the ability to speak clearly and comprehensibly so that someone else can understand you.

I love your channel and your way of interacting and explaining. It's so simple, you know. Without any show, any filters etc. Just a real conversation. You have been one of those rare people, whom I followed nearly ten years ago, and I still watch. Well your "speech" here is a kind of mix "humanoprofessional", as always. I am a nonnative English teacher, so it was great to hear from you that even natives don't know EVERYTHING in English. Sometimes I feel so upset about myself, it always seems I know too little and I always make mistakes. So thank you for your encouragement. As you said it's impossible to be perfect in a foreign language. I would even say it's impossible to be perfect even in our native languages. I am far from perfection, at least. What about that person whose comments you are discussing, he probably didn't mean anything wrong, I think he watched a lot of those nonnative speakers, who try to act like a natives. You know that kind of videos, I guess. But if you look closely to their "speech", you can notice how many mistakes they make. But they are perfect at making great show

@@MadEnglishTV by the way, I need your help. Probably you know the British word "funfair". Can you tell me please, can we switch these syllables? Is there any opportunity to use the collocation "fair fun"? I think technically it sounds logical and grammatically correct. But is this "fair fun" useful in the real life English? What if I say it to the native speaker?

(I'm from Tadat-Baomekot, Hewokloäng subdistrict, Sikka regency, East Nusatenggara province, Indonesia, South East Asia). "I don't know how many words I know", Mark said. I think it also happens to all of us without exception; since no one, I believe, have ever counted the amount of words they have known. (Just know, not mastering them).

God of algorithms, bring me to this channel that I have no prior knowledge of. However, I admire you because you explain matters in a very easy and simple way. As a Korean who studied for an English teaching license, my American professor emphasized the importance of authenticity. It's like broken (slightly incorrect grammar but commonly used by native speakers). We know that languages are similar to human life, especially in this Internet era. Regarding fluency, it is better to understand the type of person speaking or their personality. In my case, even when speaking my own language, I don't speak fluently in terms of grammar and such. There is a famous American professor who has a RU-vid channel (I can't remember his name right now) who said that nobody can speak any language perfectly grammatically. According to him, not even a linguist knows the perfect grammar of a certain language (he mentioned English). So, I am glad to have found your channel and have subscribed and hit the notification bell to not miss any of your uploads. I hope nobody will critique my grammar. 😅

It is really good to watch a person hurt and then he talks because at those times people usually tell all the truths. I really appreciate his time and passion for teaching English. I am also a person who teaches English but I am an Indian from Kerala that is in the south part of India. I do a lot of research and always try to stay updated and this guy is the person I listen to whenever I get to see a recommendation in my feed or notification. Thank you.

What makes Mark different is that it is more understandable for English learners. The two most important reasons for this are; Speaking more clearly and explaining words that may not be understood with different explanations. Of course, predicting which words will not be understandable to English learners puts Mark in a different place from other English teachers.
