In this weeks video, I take a deep dive into forensic anthropology explaining some of the technical knowledge you will need to know, education involved, and what kinds of jobs will be available to you as a forensic anthropologist. As an anthropology student myself, I was so excited to get this video request and create this video. I hope you enjoy!
Who am I? My name is Alivia Brown and I am currently an undergraduate Anthropology student at UCLA on a mission to find a career that I love. My major does not have a straight forward "path" as many would say and I am not only determined to prove that I can be successful in my major but also demonstrate my ability to find a career that brings me joy. This is my journey to expanding my global and anthropological knowledge. This is my journey to finding the best career I can. This is my journey to finding happiness. This is my journey to success.

Hi! Girl Scout mom here. One of the coolest activities my daughter's troop experienced was a trip to the Forensic Anthropology Center at Texas State University. (F.A.C.T.S). The girls were all about 13 at the time and we spent several hours with the team of female Anthro students who ran the lab. It was super engaging! They were introduced to how field research for this career is conducted, the methodologies by which cause of death is determined postmortem after significant decay. We missed the chance to tour "the boneyard," where donated cadavers are housed to study various decomposition circumstances (above ground, below ground, under a blanket, under rocks etc) because winds were extremely high that day otherwise we would have been treated to that. They explored the lab, the equipment and then they were set free to use the tools and what they learned to explore, mark, and document a mock crime scene the students set up for them. The kids also were able to closely examine 2 different sets of human remains on site which were respectfully brought out in numbered boxes and arranged on tables. Not only were they able to get an insider's view of the field, but they were also up close and personal with the students and because of our organization, the fact that the entire department was mostly female really made an impact. Personally, I put off finishing college to start a family and a business, but I'm proud to be re-enrolling into an Anthropology program myself fall after next. I'm in my early 40's so at this point in my life, I will be doing it for my own edification and don't know if I'll end up with a Master's or not, but becoming an Anthropologist has been a dream of mine for at least two decades. I may have even had more fun on that trip than my kiddo LOL. It's never too late!

Congratulations on re-enrolling that is absolutely wonderful! And on top of that, I think it is incredible that you and the girl scouts got to have this experience. It truly sounds one of a kind experience and would certainly have had an impact on me. Thank you so much for sharing this story and passion and I can only imagine what the future holds for you. You are absolutely right-it is never to late!

What you say about digging is just so true. In my archaeology class, we spent a good half a day to uncover 5 different plots in a practice site (the instructors made a makeshift). Thank you for putting that detail out. People think digging is very easy. THAT IS ONE OF THE HARDEST THINGS TO DO.

I’m working on my undergrad in forensics anthropology. Sue Black made me so it! She is an incredible woman and has quite a bit of lectures on you tube and has also written a couple of books. There are a few schools that offer a forensic’s anthropology degree.. Boston University being one of the top. There are on going projects you can work-They are still working on identifying soldiers in Vietnam.. working in war zones is an option as well as each state has a forensic’s anthropologist.. you’re called out if they find skeletal remains.. such as the Brian Laundrie case and Lori Vallow Daybell… I’ve been focusing on biology, anthropology, archaeology and criminal justice right now.. it’s super cool if your good with skeletal remains. Also, archaeology will always tell you the minute you start digging you destroyed a site… it’s about preservation and logging everything meticulously. Love your videos!!!

Hey, Alivia, I just wanted to say that I love what you're doing, and your videos are super helpful and informative!! I'm a senior in high school and I am currently researching different careers I'm interested in. Anthropology and archeology as well as ancient history/culture has been an interest of mine for as long as I can remember, and I love learning more about the career options related to those subjects. I found your channel today while doing some research and I was super excited to find you. I really appreciate that you get the information across while still keeping it at a friendly, personal, and conversational level! 😊 I subscribed and have been binge-watching several of your videos since. 😁 I also wanted to mention that I enjoyed your video about journaling as well. You offered a lot of good ideas/advice! I tend to get frustrated when I can't stick with a plan, so I really appreciate your relaxed and fun aspect!

May I ask if how important forensic anthropology is in personal identification? Thank you 🥰
@AliviaBrown
@AliviaBrown 3 года назад
Hi, of course! I would argue that forensic anthropology is extremely important when it comes to personal identification. As this is something incredibly important to get correct the first time through, the technical training forensic anthropology has to offer is essential. Of course, I am biased but I hope this is at least somewhat helpful!!
