I remember many years ago a group of fox hunters trespassed on my grandfather farm, where the fox escaped on his land and the hounds started attacking his cows. He lots 9 calves to the hounds because the hunters couldn't get control of them so he and my uncle ended up having to shoot 14 dogs to stop them. Ended up with my grandfather going to court with the hunters and they lost being charged with illegal entry, trespassing, animal control misconduct, death of livestock and many others. That case ended up with all farmers in the area closing off access to their land to any fox hunting club for many years now.

@@jordanbridgesRational culling of foxes isn't the issue. If foxes are over populated and need culling then by all means we need to do it. Issue legit hunting licenses or have the local municipal game authority figure out the best environmental system. The complaint people have is 1. Rich people calling it "fox hunting" when they aren't hunting they're just letting a huge "pack" of dogs cruelly and viciously tear apart foxes and 2. Claiming it's important because of "tradition". They aren't doing it to cull population, she even mentions that, they're just torturing animals for fun. Justifying any behavior but particularly a bad behavior with "tradition" is the dumbest thing ever. It used to be tradition to feed criminals to lions in arenas, there's a reason we don't do that any more. Tradition isn't an excuse, it's an empty reason that relies on an emotional strawman. If you want to use a gun to hunt overpopulated foxes, go for it, that could easily be integrated into hunting regulations. There's no legitimate reason why you need to ride a horse while dogs mutilate foxes. I've yet to hear a reasonable argument why this practice is necessary or why a need for fox culling requires this method. "As long as all of it gets used who cares how it happens" is the antithesis of how we operate as a society and how we manage wild or domestic animals. All of society disagrees with you.

fox hunting is the reason foxes were introduced to Australia which led to the extinction and endangerment of so many unique marsupials and ground dwelling mammals. it’s the reason Quokkas are now only found on Rottnest and why Quolls, Bettongs, Bilbies and Wallabies are so rare. It's fun to ride around, dressed like an idiot, but the end goal is awful. While the practice is incredibly stupid and cruel, it's basically ceremonial at this point.

I know people who fox hunt as a (now retired) equestrian. At least in my area (Minnesota), no foxes were actually hunted let alone killed. Only rarely were dogs taken out, and when done a scent lure was used on a predetermined trail where the dog handlers or other people would wait at the end to reward and then collect the hounds. The dogs would be sent out, the riders could either follow the dogs or if there were no dogs they could choose from a handful of routes to take to the end. It was essentially “extreme trail riding” lol. I’m not sure about it in other states nor do I know the exact laws surrounding it, I just know from what I’ve heard from the head of our local club who I worked with at my part time job and then the stories from a few of my friends and coach at one of the barns I rode/exercised horses at who had taken the lesson horses fox hunting. It’s true that this is the history of fox hunting, but the more contemporary version with no actual foxes killed could maybe explain the existence of fox hunting clubs in the states to this day? Idk. I know in England the hunting of the fox is illegal but “hunts” like I described above are still around and are the foundation of the modern equestrian sport of “hunters over fences” or hunters. For clarities sake, so no one thinks I’m defending hound or fox hunting, I am against hound hunting but am fine with other kinds of hunting dogs (flushing spaniels and retrievers) as they don’t have contact with the animals until after it’s death. Hound hunting is excessively violent and cruel to the hunted animals and is unnecessary. The only reason it still survives to this day is because of people viewing it as a “sport” or hobby because it certainly isn’t a sustainable nor ethical way of hunting meat for food. This can be seen by the targets of this form of hunting often being trophy animals such as large predators like bears and mountain lions, killed mainly for their pelts and to taxidermy. Hunting should be done to gather what you need and can use and no more, and the final moments of the animal’s life should be considered and executed quickly to avoid prolonged suffering. I have family that hunts and the end goal is always food for the family, not killing an animal purely for the act of killing like in hound and big game trophy hunting…

I'm an avid hunter and all around outdoorsman. Always thought this was a UK thing. Never viewed it as hunting because it's not. Had no idea that they did this in the states... You know if you let your dog chase wildlife you can get a fine for harassing wildlife. Dressing up like a dub and getting on a horse and allowing your dogs to tear apart a fox somehow makes that different? How this is allowed in Colorado where it's illegal to hunt elk with a scoped inline muzzleloader is astounding.

@Stogie1
@Stogie1 11 месяцев назад
@tsovloj6510 comparing the ecosystem pre human is a waste of time. With our abilities and population, it was inevitable that we would disturb the ecosystem. But you are wrong. Many invasive species have infested our ecosystems, and without contusion, human intervention. They would simply dominate their environment. The two biggest examples of a species with no predators to keep their population in check would be some species of Carps and Pythons. At this point, it is completely necessary that we hunt and fish. But it goes even farther than invasive species. Simple population control of many animals keeps the vegetation healthy. We have disturbed the ecosystem too much to not manage it.

As an equestrian and K9 handler who values heritage sports, we can find a way to "Fox Hunt" WITHOUT cruelty. Such as dummy lures, hell I've even seen cowboys work their cattle horses on RC cars for practice! 😂 I understand people wanting to keep the sport alive and maybe even the social status because fox hunting and things like Polo are aligned with a lot of that. So I disagree with those people that still think that it is necessary to cause foxes this much stress and harm. It's not that I don't appreciate the sport, it's just that there are ways to enjoy it without the unnecessarily harmful elements!❤

In America, fox hunting is also called "fox chasing", as it is the practice of many hunts not to actually kill the fox (the red fox is not regarded as a significant pest). Some hunts may go without catching a fox for several seasons, despite chasing two or more foxes in a single day's hunting.

Fox hunting for sport though, seems cruel and unnecessary in most circumstances.
