What is going on? Why is this classic Heavy Metal sound suddenly dominating the Metal world in 2024 once again? And is it just a momentarily fling or does it signify a true revival of the classic Metal scene?
While we all can of course just assume that the reason for the new Saxon, Bruce Dickinson, Judas Priest, Accept and other albums in 2024 is just an old artists’ desire to release something new to stay afloat knowing that it won’t last forever, in reality there are actually some much bigger processes in place here that will have a long term effect on Metal music… so let’s discuss them
In only about the first four months of 2024, metalheads have already been blessed by Saxon’s Hell, Fire & Damnation, Blaze Bayley’s Circle of Stone, Bruce Dickinson’s The Mandrake Project, Judas Priest’s Invincible Shield and Accept’s Humanoid among the many other amazing Heavy Metal metal albums… and this is just a start of the year, we already know there are many more coming soon!
And of course this pattern did not simply start this year, but I guess just somewhat culminated in 2024. So let's talk about all the great Classic Heavy Metal album released in 2024, The New Wave of Traditional Heavy Metal and what the future holds for Heavy Metal. Here you go!
00:00 - Intro
00:36 - Nostalgia's gone
02:03 - Make it heavier
03:18 - NWOTHM
05:46 - Youngest kid around
06:42 - Key to the future
07:37 - Verdict

Saw Priest last night in Minneapolis. Great show. I did notice that the audience overall was younger than I expected. I'm 61 and I saw Priest 4 times in the 80's and I think I saw more women last night than I saw at all 4 of those shows combined. I even talked to one guy about 30, who drove 400 miles, by himself, to see the show. This does have the feel of a last hurrah for many of these bands and I think people sense that. It may partially explain the revival you're talking about
@viking_2112
@viking_2112 3 месяца назад
I saw Priest with Saxon and Uriah heep at Leeds arena last month and I noticed the same thing that there were some significantly younger people there. Now I'm pretty young myself and I got in to this type of music from my dad who's seen priest 4 times in total but I've always been in a minority as many my age aren't in to metal so it surprised me seeing people in their late teens and early 20s and even a 10 year old. I personally think that next tour will be it for priest considering they'll be touring into next year at least then probably have a year off and then tour again so I think it'll be it sadly and so many will be going to see them to say they've seen them

"Actually understand what is being sung" is the most important aspect. Despite my appreciation of Deathcore, Industrial and Melodic Death Metal, i have to state that this is not a beginner music. AS a 69 year old I'm unfortunate enough to live in the UK, where the BBC control most (if not all) live radio and TV and quite honestly have never wanted Heavy rock. There only concessions to this were "The old grey whistle test" and the odd late night rock show. Even when we had the New wave of British heavy metal which saw British groups playing all over the world, in the UK itself most of those groups were hardly even heard of. The truth is we still have a massive underground rock and punk scene going here that is mostly ignored, so much so that most of the rock concerts in the UK are now in the North of the country where they are still filling stadiums on a regular basis but you really have to search around to find where most of these are advertised (thank god for you tube where this is concerned). And for any brits reading this keep an eye out for the Nordic countries where rock is still going strong, with new groups on a regular basis.

I mean the New Wave of traditional Heavy Metal scene has been going on for almost two decades now. Bands like Bullet, Enforcer or Grand Magus have been going since the late 90s and early 2000s. Festivals like Keep it true or the Rock Hard festival always focused their line up on traditional Heavy Metal bands. The american and canadian scene is huge, Germany, Sweden and the UK always produced great Heavy Metal Bands and apart for maybe the 90s they never stopped. Just because there are no more giants like Maiden or Priest out there, doesn't mean the scene wasn't active in the underground and is now ready to step up as our old heroes slowly approach their retirement.

I think it's because of bands working with the right producers who understand the classic sound and the modern production is needed at the same time. Also, with younger bands calling them out as influences and especially ones who would become big from the last 25 years or so out of the nü metal, or new wave of American metal stew, that's not a bad thing to me. I mean, if Slipknot calls out Judas Priest and Avenged Sevenfold and Trivium shamelessly cover Iron Maiden, i'm glad they exist too. As for 2024, it could be a last hurrah type of situation, along with my original thought that they found the right producers and obviously, all these albums are good in their own rights.

This is great news, as a 62 year old metal fan since the mis 70's I've seen bands come and go, many styles come and go, but I could not get past Metal-Core at any price, I hated it. I zoned out, this exites me again.

I think one of the driving factors of younger people getting into these bands is the instant access to all kinds of music. I had to get my ass to a record store to buy a physical copy if I wanted to hear something. Now my kids just have to ask “Alexa” and it comes on, and if they like a song they’ll use Pandora to find similar music. I would’ve killed for that ability when I was a kid.

Considering that most people listen to Taylor Swift and I listened to some pop country music in my friends car a couple days ago, I'd say that mostly people over the age of fifty listen to metal, minus my nephew of course who likes my classic rock iPod a lot

Mainstream music here in America has been garbage for decades. There are young metal fans and bands (I've seen 'em), but metal here is considered an indie genre ("alternative" music in the true sense), with none of the festival culture supporting the music like they have over in Europe.

Japan has been playing metal, hard rock for years now. Nemophila, Lovebites, Band Maid, Galneryus, Bridear, Unlucky Morpheus, Babymetal, etc. all these bands heavily influenced by Maiden, Metallica, Arch EnemyGnR, Slipknot, etc. many female bands there, as music is taught heavily in schools there.

I see a revival happening starting around 2020 more or less and yeah, we're seeing it gain momentum into this year. Like in the early 2000s the thrash revival started, now we're seeing it reboot again with more speed metal influences and a slew of blackened thrash bands. I think 2023 was one of the best years for metal releases in many many years and 2024 is off to a hot start as well. Something is brewing! Especially now that those bands from the 2000s are the veterans in the scene now. That said, of the 'classic' bands releasing stuff this year, only Priest has mattered to me.

went to sepultura/sacred reich in manchester uk last year, and the crowd could hardly headbang, most of the people who i used to hang about with in the pub were propped up against walls or had walking aids, by the end of the night i was in a worse state than my first concert in 1990, headbanging like a true thrasher, even after a break of about 12 years since my last concert

I think a big part of it that the "heaviness war" is finally coming to a head where you can't much heavier/abrasive without getting into noise music territory after 30 years of constantly pushing the boundary. So people are re-evaluating and considering that maybe what defines the quality of metal isn't who can downtune the most or make the most intelligible growl. That gives all the legacy acts and the modern revival acts doing more traditional and melodic forms of metal time to shine as people start exploring that side of the genre. Which, I have no problem with that resurgence because I'm someone rarely goes heavier than thrash and some metalcore/nu metal.

I am the first Fan of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal 😅 (i started at the Age of 14) and in these Days i was a RiffRaff (as AC DC sang). I had Problems with my Parents, Teachers, Neighbors and the BarbieGirls ( witch i didn't mind because in the Metalscene we didn't need Girls - for Talking 😊) Now Heavy Metal is Mainstream. On the one Hand i embrace and like it to see so many different People and young Folks. But for the young Folk it's TikTok or Amazon. Available at any Time. Very fast forgotten afterwards because they are on the Way to the next Event. To me Heavy Metal is my Life and Soul. I life for it. Keep on Rockin'

As much as I agree with you, I'll go one step further. The most untapped potential in metal isn't with Thrash/Death/Black Metal acts, it's with the NWOBHM acts and their progeny. A band like Midnight would not have been popular in the early 2000s but here we are and the younger acts who want to study the discography of Tank, Tygers of Pan Tang (Jon Sykes, great guitarist), and Cirith Ungol among many others, will find fertile ground to see the experiment out. Thanks Metal Pilgrim!

There is a hunger for something that isn't rap or the polished 'pop star du jour' from Big Music. There is so much social engineering going on in the media and pop culture and little in form of a rebellious movement. Punk and Metal both need a comeback.

I think we are seeing a split happen in metal, and two very separate scenes emerge. I was a teen in the 2000s and we loved metal raging from Sabbath, to Thrash and Death metal. When metalcore and Deathcore was becoming big it felt very differnet and i would dabble but could never get into it. Now metal and metalcore genres seem to have deviated from one another and for the kost part have very seperate fan bases. I think that separation has given traditional metal room to grow again.
