Shirley Jackson, the author of the book the series is based on, is one of the authors that inspired Stephen King. Not hard to see why. I would love if you watched the series a bit quicker. Have been waiting for over a week, you guys! 😊
I saw this when it first came out. I won't tell you which episode, but make sure that you're prepared for a jump scare so no one gets hurt. It'll be glorious, but please don't hurt yourselves or each other. It's a reaction moment I'm going to rewind, like, 30 times.
Great reactions. As you progress through these episodes you will notice that each of these siblings represent one of the five stages of grief. Steve- Denial, Shirley- Bargaining, Theo- Anger, Luke- Depression and Nell- Acceptance
i really appreciate that you guys caught onto the little girl’s abuse so quickly, i feel like the male reactors i’ve watched usually don’t get it at first compared to women that i’ve seen
@@AsylumSaint if anyone is playing the victim card it’s you. I’m sorry you’re hurt and are taking it out on a comment simply praising a group of men for their sensitivity towards abuse. Life isn’t a competition of who’s more abused and hurt by the patriarchal system we all live in. Crazy how a comment trying to appreciate men’s emotional intelligence -> including them in the conversation around abuse turned into this from you. But I guess we can’t do anything right for someone like you that clearly decided to hate woman for being sexist. Oh the irony
@@AsylumSaint All she said was her opinion and you’ve taken it so personally. She said SHE felt other male reactors didn’t notice. She never said anything to warrant this level of anger man chill out.
@@AsylumSaint no broad strokes were painted as the comment made it clear that it was their individual experience that usually the men reacting to this scene don’t get the first few hints of abuse. You are the one to turn it into every an implication of your entire gender. The only one coming in with negative energy and implications is you. Have a wonderful life 🌈
"the twin thing" ep always gets me emotional. Luke went through a lot and the whole addiction thing, Joey betraying, Nell dying and above all he got jumped for no reason smh.
All while experiencing rigor mortis fully alive after Nell died because of "the twin thing." That's why he's so stiff and cold before his brother finds him.
I'm actually glad they cast such a handsome adult Luke. If they would have turned such a sweet, innocent kid into a haggard mess; it would have really broke my heart.
Yeah the one thing that always made me feel so sad for Luke was that Luke always drew strength from his family (his counting to seven whenever he was scared), but then his family goes and abandons him when he needed them. I understand that having an addict for a family member and dealing with the constant struggle and disappointment trying to get them clean can be extremely emotionally draining, but it still gets me that Luke was left alone to deal with his demons.
The siblings are portraying the 5 stages of grief. Steve is denial, Shirley is anger, Theo is bargaining, Luke is depression and sweet Nellie is acceptance. I love this show so much. The way they sit with the shots and let the horror linger, even if there isn't a ghost on the screen, but just traumatized people. Damn that hurts. It also shows that you can be haunted by so much more than just people who died. Shame, trauma and grief are just as powerful to scare the shit out of you, and that is so true.
Theo is always cold in that house because she is more susceptible to feelings and touch and the house is full of spirits. All the other kids are wearing summer clothes, she is always wearing sweaters
The Mr. Smiley storyline is so well done; there are so many clues... When she uses the dollhouse, she uses the Father doll to indicate Mr. Smiley in the basement. When Theo talks to the foster parents in the hall (3:17), the smile poster lines up to the foster dad's face. In the girl's drawing, the foster Dad's face and Mr. Smiley's face are drawn identically, the other family members faces are drawn normally. The Mr. Smiley monster in Theo's dream is wood.
I'm so glad you guys caught the rigor mortis thing. It's one of my favorite details from this episode and you're the first reaction channel I've seen catch it. - Oh also, fun theory my brother and I thought of. Each of the kids is psychic relating to one of the five major senses. Theo is the most obvious, touch. But whereas Theo is always cold, Luke is always smelling something bad, Shirley is always hearing things, and Nell can always see things, leaving Steve with taste, which is the weakest, but might be why he never experienced much in the house. Also, he became the narrator and teller of their story so somewhat of a "mouth/mouthpiece" metaphor. Idk, just a fun theory that lines up.
It's so lovely to see you guys watch this, honestly you're probably the most enjoyable reaction channels I've found so far doing so. You share your thoughts fairly frequently through the video and you bring the charisma to the camera and it makes for good entertainment. I hope you're enjoying the series, it's definitely a good one, and its sister-show Bly Manor actually made me cry.
little baby theo screaming "don't touch me!!!" straight up brought me to tears. it freaks me out and when you see a kid in distress like that all you want is to hold them, comfort them somehow and that's exactly what she doesn't want. luke's episode is just so heartwrenching and it makes sense why he is the way he is, he's continued to experience things the others haven't because he's been followed this whole time. it's horrible to think about.
What I love about Theo's episode is the sudden turn at the end, as we expect the presence of ghosts and monsters, but reality hits us with the presence of real monsters such as the child's father, and we go back to saying, "Oh, it's true that monsters exist in other forms in reality!"
I love the tall man in the hat. Is so simple, but so genius, I could have never imagine something lile that. The fact that he floats but walks with a cane? I've never seen anything like that before. Luke is one of my favorite of all the kids, him and Theo are my favorites I think.
It's how a lot of people that think they've seen ghosts describe them. Missing legs, or arms, or features and stuff like that. No clue if ghosts are real or not...but it was a nice touch to track with other shows.
You guys are so intuitive and in tune with the characters/plot - even this early on - it's incredible to watch. You speak of the different perspectives of all characters as you're introduced to them and have such seemingly honest reactions. I really love your commentary. I'm thrilled I found you.
I'm so glad you're watching this masterpiece of a series. This show came out at the exact time when I needed it, it helped me with a loss I was dealing and it'll always be dear to my heart. No other piece of media did for me what last two episodes did and I can't wait to see you react to them.
Prepare yourselves for the next ones! One of the best shows which should have been nominated and recieve a lot of rewards! Mike Flanagan is a genius!! A masterpice! Episode 5, 6 and the rest of it will blow your minds! Just a magic of cinematography, writing and cast! Just...I wish you would binge watch, but I get the schedule guys! Thank you for you reactions, years have past but I'm waiting for your reactions to this one more than any new shows existing! ♥ Also I highly recommend to watch The haunting of Bly manor after this one. It's also Mike's but different amazing story with almost same cast but different charecters and story. There's no connection with Hill House, but yet, brrilliant too! The haunting of Bly manor! Hands down, both of these shows are brilliant!
The brother who plays Steven was in Game of thrones. He played Daario Naharis (Daenerys' lover and bodyguard in Meeren, slaver's bay).He had long black hair then.
Luke's episode was my favorite. His and Nell's relationship is my favorite, besides Shirl and Theo. The fact that he felt he felt her die, felt her body going into rigor - the writing of them is absolutely magnificent! Can't wait to see you guys react to the rest of the episodes!
In stark contrast to what many others will say - I say: don't waste your time watching out deliberately for the ghosts in the background. Most of them are simply figures standing still, only partially visible - some of them even stuck in locations, where no one would ever look for them (in cabinets, etc). The few ghosts that are actually relevant to the plot, are shown in full view and close up - at a time, when revealing their existence makes sense. If you waste your time looking for one half of a body, shown standing in a doorway two rooms down a hallway, or a face peeking out under a ladder, you'll miss the actual important stuff.
I really like what the Oak touched upon; childhood trauma is incomparable to adult trauma. At its core, trauma is trauma, but the secondary impacts can be especially huge for developing minds. Children already have a harder time regulating their emotions and making sense of things, so the initial impact often feels more intense, it may take much longer to work through, and the lingering effects may be bigger. Plus, it all takes time and energy away from normal developmental opportunities. Something that is often overlooked is how it can also change their entire worldview. Especially when it involves a parental figure (which children see as something that's always going to be there), they can lose this essential sense of safety and stability and feel incredibly lost. Another thing that can be involved is magical thinking: some children cannot rationalize the situation and end up thinking that they caused the traumatic event(s) to happen, because of something they did or thought, or simply because they existed. The internalization of how the world works and what kind of impact you have on others is the cornerstone of your internal beliefs as an adult. This belief is made up out of all of our (sub)conscious experiences, weighed against each other. Because we remember negative experiences better, trauma can have a great impact on this. Especially repeated/continuous trauma (e.g. abuse, foster system) can change the entire way you see yourself and other people, and thus influences the relationships you have with others for the rest of your life. When trauma becomes intertwined with development, one can assume it will create lasting consequences. Of course, trauma manifests in many different ways and is dependent on many different factors. There are children that gain incredible coping skills and come back from trauma faster than most adults. A good support system is vital in this. And just because the impact can be drastic does not mean that you're lesser than or that things can't get better. The human body can recover in magnificent ways, and the mind can fight back. There are many people who thrive after trauma and there will always be people to support you in this journey. I'm not trying to dictate the trauma experience, I'm just shining a light on what cán happen. It's different for everyone, me included.
Very true. Psychologists have been saying how important those early years are...and they're not lying. But there's always hope. No one gets out unscathed...but healing is always possible.
Children have no context yet in which to frame events. They depend on their parents to provide a lot of the context for things. This is good, this is bad, this is scary, this isn't, etc. Until they build up enough of their own experiences and choices to learn for themselves how they view the world. So when something like this happens, it obviously has massive impacts on literally everything.
I never thought I'd be a person who dealt with addiction in my family. But several years ago it happened with my little brother and it was such a stressful time, and has never fully went away. He lost his baby and everything just went downhill for him. He was just 20 years old and already had some life stress, like us all, and dealt (deals) with bipolar. Everything escalated after that. He was friends with a guy who was in with some drugs and unsavory people. So that gave him easy access and influence to start. We tried an intervention, which we knew wouldn't work. It didn't. His personality changed, his looks. And I not only felt the pain of seeing this person who was a part of my life growing up ever since we came into this world, but the pain of people who would see him, strangers, who would automatically see an addict and nothing more. I hated that people could only see that when they looked at him, and there was nothing you could do about it. Just someone to either laugh at or judge severely. But never see him as a person who was once a little boy and funny and important to people. Not once consider where's he's been, and how he might've gotten to where he was. It was such a horrible time. You sort of feel like you've lost a sibling in many ways. Everything takes a twist and you find yourself in scenarios and dealing with worries and stress that you never did before. It's almost impossible to accurately describe. Eventually he ended up going to prison for a few years. That was a whole new situation as well. Driving 4 hours one way just to visit. I had never experienced going to a prison before and it wasn't enjoyable. Walking past dorms with inmates watching was very uncomfortable, a few even yelled although it didn't happen much as it wasn't allowed. But they definitely watch. And the whole situation is just depressing and nerve wracking. But there are definitely worse prisons than where he went so he was lucky that it wasn't a horrific experience like some go through. It actually helped him and we can only be thankful for it now because he would've ended up dead. He's doing so much better but you still see those little signs that stress you out, and small changes in his demeanor and mannerisms from the drug use. He's been clean for almost 2 years so he is honestly so much better off than he was. But it's always a fear of him falling back into it one day. It's so easy to do. We know this as well because after he went to prison one of my younger cousins got messed up in drugs and she went through being sober and falling back many times. It was after all of this began that we started to see just how bad the drug problem is in the world. It was like it didn't exist and then all of a sudden this curtain was lifted and everything became more clearer, but also more depressing. It's just horrible and even though I don't wish the experience on anyone, you can't fully understand it unless you go through it. So I hope things like this (this episode), that show a person during different life stages like this, will help people to try and understand these things a little better.
Thanks for sharing. Hopefully we can find ways to better take care of each other. Everyone has a part to play. A lot of addiction really is just self medicating depression or bi polar or what have you. It's not exactly the moral quagmire some make it out to be. People just need a hand up, and maybe some treatment they can afford. Glad prison ended up being the wake up call he needed. Best to you, and him, and your family.
The family vibes from this show is so good and well casted. They genuinely feel like a family and so we feel bad for them because they're so fractured. Theo is my favorite of the siblings by far but I think these show that none of them turned out to be perfect people. They make really human mistakes. I also don't know how far along you guys are but I want to point out that sometimes people think that none of Nell's siblings were ever there for her but I think people overlook that they all show up for each other. In Luke's case they had to put up walls because he's an addict but I think depression in general is difficult for people to understand because it manifests differently in each person. I think the older siblings kind of get some unfair flack for how Nell and Luke are handled especially when it came to Nell's last day. I just wanted to say this moving forward because people think that just because Nell's siblings were busy on her last day it means they were never there for her.
I love how insightful you guys are, catching onto the stepdad, the kids's abilities, Shirley's husband...it's such a treat to have reactors who are paying such close attention and then analyze it, catching things even I've missed in my many rewatches of this! I love it!
The older brother is portraying "Denial" and that explains a lot about his behaviour... We have to consider the fact that he didn't see anything or at least he thinks so. His take on what happened is super 'practical/realistic'. It was mental illness. He doesn't believe in the supernatural aspect at all. All the siblings changed with that experience, the olders got more distant while the youngers still suffered without getting a lot of attention to their real struggles, because everyone else was occupied in denial (steve), anger (shirley) or bargaining (theo) with the past. THIS STORY IS SO SAD 😩
I LOVE that basically every episode you can find ghosts hiding in the background in the house scenes, its super fun to try to found them, for exemple there is one behind theo here 20:29 ...i love this show
Love the reaction guys! I just get so sad for Luke from getting robbed, judged, abandoned, jumped, beat up, etc. just so MUCH, he couldn't even go to his twin sister's wedding :(
Episode 3 had me turning all the lights on in the house before going to sleep. Episode 4 had me so emotional; tears came to my eyes when Luke explained that counting to seven (whole family) is what keeps you safe. I love this show and I am so glad that you are watching it. Thank you gentlemen.
I've seen many people react to this as it's one of my favourite shows, but it's brilliant to see you guys treat the material with maturity and intelligence rather than just lust over the horror aspect. This show is a psychologically detailed and emotional mosaic coming together slowly piece by piece. Can't wait to see your takes on the next 2. Bravo Guys
This show IS brilliant. I started watching it to watch with you guys and I was surprised how much I loved it and how well done it is. Theo’s episode is definitely a stand out favorite. What I love is how this show blends the psychology and trauma almost making the horror symbolic of how those things do carry on with you, they can “haunt” you. So good.
When you guys finish this series, please please please go back and watch a compilation of the ghost hidden in the background. There is a crazy amount throughout the whole series and it deserves a reaction on its own!
this show is so brilliant. some of the deepest horrors in our lives are the secrets we keep and the ways in which we hurt the ones we love. i love the theory that each of the kids represent one of the 5 senses, or even that the 5 stages of grieving.
I really love how this whole story is told with the flashbacks/flashforwards and focusing on different characters each time. And I enjoy you guys guessing and speculating, and the empathy you have for the characters.
The guy who made this series also directed Dr Sleep (the shining sequel) and if you like this I highly recommend adding it to the react list if you haven't seen it already 😊
I watched this show when it first came out and it blew my mind. I agree with you guys, now a days everyone expects a jump scare, but the director did such an amazing job putting you on you toes and letting you own mind come up with the "what ifs" to scare the bejesus out of you. I love watching your reactions to it, you even brought up a couple of instances that I missed or forgot. I did want to bring up since I didn't see another post about it but I had always thought the the Man in the Hat was Luke's fear personified. That was why it would stay at least 7 steps away and it wasn't until Nellie died that it was able to come closer.
One of the great things about this show is that each siblings represent the 5 stages of grief, even in order of eldest to youngest. - Steve is denial with him not believing in the paranormal and the things that happened when they were kids in the house. - Shirley is anger because she's always blaming all her siblings and holding grudges. Even getting angry at Nell for dying. - Theo is bargaining. With her power of touch she's always trying to bargain for a better outcome. - Luke is depression being the one having a drug addiction, which is a form of depression. And once he finds out his twin sister died, he just couldn't live without her. - And Nell is acceptance since she went back to the house and accepts her death.
After watching your reactions for episode 1&2 I had to become your patreon and have yesterday watched your reactions till episode 5 and have enjoyed it so much. Today I will continue
Oak’s “no wonder the dude’s got problems” after the basement scene had me howling 😂😂😂 … also, Luke’s episode breaks my heart. I’ve never really watched a show like this before or since that’s made me feel horror and deep sadness all the time-maybe Babadook. I went through my own version of what Luke did… not quite as dire as his story, but bad enough and let me tell you, crawling back out of it is it’s own nightmare. The shame is enormous. I feel like this genre of horror that doubly uses it as metaphor for personal demons, grief, loss… it’s a very underrated niche.
Really enjoying your reactions to this series. Since the first 2 episodes were posted, I keep checking everyday for the next ones. SO HAPPY to see these 2 today. I honestly cannot wait for the rest.
The writing is brilliant - the way they weave real life horrors into the storyline (child abuse, non-support for our veterans, addiction) to show how many levels there are to it. Luke is sensitive - he talks about how the whole house smells, like Theo said the whole house is cold. Yes, Luke finally faces his fears/trauma and it's not The Tall Man, it's the loss of his mother. Theo is listening to Cold Heart - a nice character drop. Several hidden ghosts in these two episodes. Background: Luke and Theo are characters from the book, tho not related. Theo has ESP, but not in the way she does in the series. "Who's hand", the cold spot and the smell are taken from the book.
so at the time of this episode when it was released and i binged it all in one night, the 4th episode caused me to pause. 14 years at the time clean and from 11-16 i was in rehab centers in and out constantly. 5 years of those types of places. it really hit hard but i loved that they covered it.i loved the reactions and the discussions!~ thanks guys for the amazing content to binge watching!
Gotta give props to the musical score in this series too. Some of it gets transferred to the next series Bly Manor (and I actually like it a bit more there), but it still really beautiful here.
We are almost there, Episode 6 is one of the best episodes of TV in a looong while. I'm enjoying this little journey. I'm not much of a horror so this put me off at first and then when I realized it was more psychological than horror, I was hooked. Horry has become more gross out gore than scary, and this went more eerie, creepy, uneasy than gory brutal.
I love shows that could allow a random character who only appears once in the series make such an impactful monologue and performance as that blind guy in the beginning. Excellent writing, and loved your reaction and commentary.
Gosh guys I’m so glad you’re taking to this series! This has been my all time favorite show ever since I first watched it and it’s about to get SO GOOD!! I’m so excited for y’all for what’s to come! Also you guys should really consider watching more of Mike Flanagan afterwards, he’s a MASTER of horror anthropologies
Little mckenna grace killed it as theo! Check out her work she's incredible! Her movie gifted is one of my favorites, and she kills it on the handmaid's tales right now
Theo is my absolute favorite character and Luke's episode is my favorite episode. I love how Theo moves through the world and obviously cares so much for her family. plus, her power is just cool! haha as for Luke having a power, since he and Nellie are twins he has that twin thing with her and so I think that's why he's the only boy who has some type of power. Shirley sees and says things in her dreams and Nellie was also said to have extra sensitive hearing. when I realized that Luke was essentially going through withdrawal from Nellie, I freaking lost it! anyway, so glad you guys are enjoying this amazing show; so excited for the rest of the season ❤
I love this series, you guys are amazing , when you finish the series you have to see all the hidden details you missed on the show, it’s creepy but the attention to detail was incredible✨
After you guys posted the first video I realized that my fiance could not remember anything that happened so I ended up watching it again with him, now my third time. Still a great watch and an amazing show! I'm really glad you guys are watching it too.
So glad you are enjoying this show. I really hope there will be a third one at some point, I loved the first season, enjoyed the second even thou it was very different and they are new stories each season, so I am hoping for more.
I watched this episode while sick, later, I went into my hallway to stand by the heater to combat the chills and started to fall asleep. That floating man was heading down the hallway in my dream and I woke myself up swinging at the thing. Stopped watching the show until I got better lol.
This show, what can i say.. I've said it before, the best horror series ever. It is so beautifully written, the casting is perfect, those kids , I mean, they are amazing !!!! The acting is so perfect, you get so invented with the whole family. I've seen this show a few times and this episode is always so hard for me to watch. Lukes struggle is so painful to see, I can't imagine being in his shoes. So happy you guys are enjoying this so much, can't wait for the rest of the series reactions
You 3 have me in tears with the Theo in the basement scene 😂😂😂 omg I had to pause it because I’m a bit on edge watching it even though I’ve seen this whole season twice
