In 2020, protests by environmental activists in Bashkortostan prevented the development of a deposit on Mount Kushtau, which local residents consider sacred. On January 17, 2024, protest leader Fail Alsynov was sentenced to four years in prison for inciting interethnic strife, based on a statement by the head of Bashkortostan, Radiy Khabirov.
After the verdict, mass riots broke out near the court in the city of Baymak. An unauthorized rally took place in the capital of Bashkortostan, Ufa.
Authorities are pursuing protest participants. More than 50 people have been detained, and one person died during the detention. People fear repression, arbitrary actions by mining companies, and recall Salavat Yulaev - a national hero of the Bashkirs and a participant in Pugachev's rebellion
