As someone who does both, there is no competition skiing is 100% more natural for the human body. Skiing is far easier to balance, as you are in the natural direction with even body weight on both feet. Snowboarding you're facing sideways and placing 60-70% of your body weight on your back foot. Meaning every impact is absorbed unevenly.

that is an awesome explanation! I've never gone skiing or snowboarding, only ice skating so I had no idea what it felt like but you sir made me feel and picture what it is like.

I literally have to disgree with you I couldn’t figure out sking but the second I strapped into my first board I naturally could do it. The guy teaching me asked my parents if it was some kind of joke then chased me down to the chair. I still to this day don’t know why.

snowboarding is certainly style over practicality.

That’s just because you’re horrid at them. The start is easy w skiing. However mastering the sport is way way way harder for skiing

I roller-skate and ice-skate a lot, so when I first tried out skiing, I went from stopping in a "V" shape to a full parallel stop within the first 30 minutes of ever being in skis. It wasn't technically perfect, but I definitely felt that knowing how to hockey-stop on ice-skates helped tremendously.

Couldn't have said it better or more simply myself. I do both, along with skateboarding and skiing is way easier to learn at first but snowboarding is way cooler so you be the judge lol.

The beginner/intermediate skier looks less cool than the same snowboarder. I think it has to do with the stance, the traditional associations of each sport with different generations (older, wealthier people vs rebellious youngsters), and the focus of skiing on technical movements (eg. moguls, racing) vs snowboarding on having fun (tricks). When you see people doing random side hits on the slopes doing jumps, spins, butters, etc, both look cool. When you see people racing down gates or moguls, it's impressive but not particularly cool.

I went snowboarding yesterday for the first time and I went alone. Didn’t use a lesson or anything, just took all day to learn and by the end I was hitting the highest trails. (easy ones obviously) I’m pretty proud of that, knowing how it’s hard to learn

The nice thing about snowboarding is you can always slide down on your edge or go back and fourth without turning if you get yourself in a sticky situation or you mess up a turn.
@Ghostyfrost9688

Very nicely detailed opinion. The point about transitioning from snowplowing to parallel skiing is a good one. The only equivalent to that in snowboarding is those people who only use their heel edge and refuse to learn toe edges. Those people progress SLOWLY

@shredcity
@shredcity 5 лет назад
@lopindoosherfl No. I agree snowboarding is harder to learn as a beginner and easier to learn as an intermediate. At the top level of freeriding I think the results of competitions show us that skiing is easier. If you took an identical human being and gave him a set of skis for a run, then gave him a snowboard for a run, whichever one he could do the most impressive run on you could say is the easiest sport, since it is the same rider in both cases. In real life we can't do this because he will probably be slightly better at one sport than the other so it's not a fair test. One option for a fair comparison is to take the very best snowboarder and the very best skier and compare what they can do in one run. Since invariably in competitions the skier will do the more impressive run, as we are considering both riders to have the same baseline set of attributes, this suggests that at competitive level skiing is easier than snowboarding.

Best explanation, thank you. I have a question. I am operated on my ligament of my knee. So i have one protese on my right knee. Is it better for me to start snowboarding or ski? Thanks
@ENGKnowboard
@ENGKnowboard 6 лет назад
I would strongy suggest you try snowboarding over skiing. The wear and tear on you knee is very high while skiing. If you can snowboard without problems is determant by your knee damage in particular. I would have a look at our "basics" video. There i explain all the movements you have to do. Try them without a Snowboard and have a look what your knee thinks about them :)

You have expirience with snow and board sports, so why not to learn snowboarding. The expirience you have will not make you a pro, but it will help you much the first weeks and you will progress faster then people without any of that expirience. So do it if you want it.

It was a different case for me I guess.. lol. I've never skateboarded or whatsoever. First time I got to a ski resort, I didn't know which one is better, then I saw a kid with her mom behind skiing down the mountain. They made it look so easy, so I went for the skiis, and quickly found out NOPE! LOL, I then switched to snowboard and maybe an hour into it/ 3 trips to the top, I was cruising down already (no tricks tho, just riding)

Very interesting video. You mentioned that snowboarding is easier to master than skiing. However, in competitions the technical difficulty of the skiing is almost always greater than the technical difficulty of the snowboarding. For example, in the recent history of the Freeride World Tour, there has never been an event in which the winning snowboard run has been more technically challenging from a viewers perspective than the winning ski run, and this pattern is repeated right down to "grass-roots" local competitions. The same is true of films, where the technical difficulty of skiing is usually harder than that of snowboarding (for example, compare Cody Townsend and Travis Rice on The Crack). How do you explain this?
@shredcity
@shredcity 5 лет назад
@lopindoosherfl Hi there. To clarify- If snowboarding were easier, then it would be easier to do a very challenging run. So if you compared a competition run by a top level snowboarder with that of a top level skier, then you would expect the snowboarders run to be a higher level of difficulty (bigger cliffs, faster line, more spins). Instead the exact opposite is true, the top ski runs in freeride competitions are always faster with more cliffs and more tricks than the top snowboard runs. This suggests that at the top level, a lower level of athletic skill is required for a skier to do a given run than for a snowboarder to do that same run.
