Rick, a few things: 1) Brilliant as always! Your presentation matches your knowledge and pedagogical approaches as a music teacher! 2) The visuals you use to match each mode are breathtaking! 3) You should release an album featuring all of the songs that you write for videos like this. I would love to own a copy of that and I'm sure many other viewers would too!

God man, the way you explain modes and compose for them and so on is just so damn inspiring because just "learning a mode" is that the same as what do you do nor has any teacher or player I've come across. @@mwdanny absolutely! I will say that Ben Eller has a really good channel (for guitar) as well! It's so hard to find musicians locally a play with because they're either too busy or already in multiple groups, it gets disheartening after awhile but alas. But yeah, thank God for the internet and his beato book and bundle are AWESOME! Quick side note, I recently got the 2014 remastered edition of Rocksmith and I will say that is an absolutely brilliant way to not just learn songs but learn techniques, regardless of how long you been playing, and you can pick modes, Keys, whatever can set it up to where you play on one part of the neck the whole part of the neck have it randomly Shuffle, change to prove all that stuff so it really really ingrained in your brain, it also does awesome with a memory so when you're unsure if it's going to be the right note, there's a higher chance it will be because even though you can't remember the cord name or the mode you're playing in, you'll end up staying in the right one. I really wish I would have had that teaching game, focused on modes a whole lot more when I was learning, etc. I have plenty of data and technique, but is no substitute for being driven play in practice like when you first start out so better late than never to come across all free channels and tools! Sorry for the long response, which I use voice to text with, which I did not proofread so hopefully Google didn't screw up the grammar too bad, it likes to do that, haha. 😊 🤘🏻🤙🏼 have a great one!!
Rick, I hope throughout the music community you are appreciated. Honestly, your knowledge of music is top shelf. Thank you for putting out product like this video in general. I’ve been playing guitar for almost 40 years and have stumbled on a lot of these principles through trial and error and having an above average ear but you explaining them really glued it all together for me. I was driving in my car with my 16 year old son when "Carry On Wayward Son" by Kansas came on the radio. Needless to say, the two of us rocked out for 5 minutes. I was reminded of something that Jack Black once said about the band Rush: "Rush is just one of those bands that has a deep reservoir of rocket sauce. A lot of bands - they've only got so much in the bottle. They use it up sometimes in one song." Unlike Rush, I think Kansas used all their rocket sauce on that song. Carry On Wayward Son is an amazing song and such an opus for a band that was never able to obtain that level of precision and excellence. Would love it if you could put it on your list for future "What Makes This Song Great?" series.
I feel like we need to see more practice videos on the piano. It would be nice to see you doing exercises like those you come up with for the guitar on the piano, maybe with an overhead camera view. Great video and composition!

What a great tool to use, and keep in mind when composing. The piece you made really demonstrates the two scales' propensity for expressive statements when used together. I think it was also beautiful.

To me, it’s amazing that you’re able to compose a piece in these modes, because to me they sound so dissonant. I guess mainly because of the chromaticism. Very creative on your part.

Great vid, again! I'm intrigued why you compose these tunes on piano given that (it seems to me at any rate) your primary instrument is the guitar. How refreshing though that you actually play the piano rather than just translate guitar playing onto a keyboard.

I got a song out of one your earlier vids about the Hungarian Monor scale. I really enjoy these esp as you list the scale like I-II-BIII etc so it's easy to figure out in different keys. Thanks!
Great stuff, you'd be amazed how many corridors you unlock in my brain which lead to further self discovery, unbelievable! I just experimented with C Romanian major starting with the opening chord F#, B flat and E right hand over a left hand chord C, D flat, G, A (I got them spooky eyes!), modulating to C Hungarian minor, B harmonic major, B melodic minor to B flat double harmonic major to B flat Eastern Transylvania minor, so spooky it consists of just ghost notes! I was reluctant to use the Vlad the Impaler Dorian Double-Sharp Spike scale as rumour has it it's lethal!! :-)

After listening to a bunch of your compositions using these alternate scales, the music has a very haunting sound. It is representative of extinction anxiety or entropy of existence. Very dark! Very current in our collective experience of life these days.

The idea that someone can apply these complicated scales to make something that actually sounds melodic is really interesting. It would be cool if we could see these sort of scales in metal too! I think generally most of the more popular metal today is deathcore and metalcore, but I like the progressive death metal bands because they can take this type of interesting music theory and apply it to a new context. Great video!
Just the other day i heard The Mystery of Bulgarian Voices thought i could hear double harmonic major played beautifully. I looked up the scale Hungarian minor and played using intervals blew my mind how it is constructed, Thanks Rick rich material for amazing sounds.
Rick, I've been wanting to ask something for a while. Now I have two ideas. You do a lot of what makes this rock song great. My first question is would you be able to and interested in doing "Twist and crawl" by English Beat. Second, I remember a solo artist from the 80's who was a really good guitarist, but he only had one song that was good to listen to i.e. catchy. The rest of the songs were really hard to listen to. His name was Aldo Nova. The name of the song was Fantasy. It's not that I want to hear what made this song great as much as a compare and contrast to why his other songs were not good at all.
Rick: I’ve been really digging (and digging into) your harmonic minor/major/superlocrian/etc stuff lately, going back to check many of your older videos on the subject. I find it to be really fascinating stuff - please keep ‘em coming! One question about the recordings of these compositions: are you really that good of a pianist (I’m thinking of the fast scalar passages in particular), or do you program them in a DAW or some other means? I’d be curious to see a video on your compositional and recording process for these pieces, if you’re up for it. Thanks again!
Rick, as anyone who has undertaken the task could attest, really internalizing all these scales and the chords they make available is a lot of work. Just out of curiosity, how old were you when you undertook this task, and did you do a lot of it all at once or have you studied different scales in depth at different times in your life? I'm doing a lot of it as a senior citizen - maybe it will help to keep dementia at bay! 😊
Not until my late 20’s but really not again until the past two years. I spent 25 years without studying anything related to this. It’s great for your mind!
Yes, please! Thanks for more of your music, Rick. Lovely, and refreshing. I'd say for the "please translate into English" type comment (which I suspect are made in good heart, in the spirit of self-effacing humour, rather than as sadde compleintes - as Chaucer would have it), click the Refresh thing, and then just focus on that piano. When Rick reacts to it, if you didn't, then write down the time of the incident, so you can go back and listen again. And then listen to the piano and the pictures afterwards. Do it again if it didn't all resonate as you feel it perhaps should have. (And here ends Ye Plunckerres Guide to Understandynge Musicke). (It's a bit like listening in ignorance to anything. You just take your human ears to it, listen, like what you like, don't be hasty to hate what you just don't-like (there's a lot of choices other than dislike if the like-light doesn't switch on), and then go away all confused, but a bit happy from all the bits you did like. Some time later, do it again. And again. And again.... and then after a while your ears figure out their own translation of what the composer was trying to tell you. In this strange language that's all about itself, but seems to say something meaningful to us with our human ears.) Nice thing about having the explanation beforehand, is you can either take that as a starting point to the theoretical stuff you'd need to fully comprehend, or you can take the little bits you do know, and try make an educated guess. Your human ears get a bit of help with directions of what to look for. ... Just pick out the bits you like, again?
