I will cite this video in my assignment. It is the clearest explanation of inquiry for me so far. Thanks Scott!!

This was very helpful since I am a student who is new to this topic and so I was assigned to report this in class. Your video was very much easily understood. :)

Insightful summary about IBL which connected to CLIL and communicative language teaching, provides a methodological approach I have tried to implement in my classes.

Would you add English subtitles so that people speaking other languages can get the accurate message from this sharing!!

Hi Scott Crombie, i am Physics teacher. now i teach with IBL but it is difficult to me. how can i overcome this? problem is consuming time, lack of resource, especially i am not clear about IBL.

Hi Hen, IBL is a teaching methodology used mainly by Medical faculties/Applied health sciences/Education faculties. This method is also used in legal training (Arts) some courses in Business and Police Academy, criminology (Arts). If you go to court, for example, you get interviewed, you go to the hospital/clinic you get interviewed- etc just to simplify for you to understand what I said earlier. This is the method used in STEM. If you are not from these specialty areas, then you do not need to use IBL. Regards.

A very misleading description of IBL. For one, there are a number of definitions of IBL. Non directed IBL has consistently shown to be an inferior method of learning in almost every scenario. Perhaps apart from learners who already have a vast knowledge based, its definitely not good for novices. Teacher directed, highly scaffolded IBL has shown to have equal or slightly lower than equal test scores but does have other benefits. It can be argued that highly scaffolded IBL is not really IBL at all. Highly effective teachers use the right teaching technique for the right class at the correct time and don't rely on just one.

This video is part of a series of videos. The other videos play their part in explaining IBL, why it is needed and ways of overcoming the barriers. As with everything you need to take your information from a variety of sources to build your own knowledge around a particular topic. This video plays its part in introducing the concept of IBL in a very simple way rather being misleading. To learn how to teach using IBL takes days/months and years not just watching a 6 minute video. Certainly scaffolding is required, particularly when pupils and teachers are new to IBL. The amount of scaffolding should be adjusted for each particular class. There are always going to be barriers to using IBL and as a teacher becomes more adept at using IBL so these barriers become less of an obstacle. I completely agree that effective teachers should be able to use a variety of methodologies but the fact remains that many teachers do not. That is why this series of videos was developed, to help teachers to think about other methodologies and perhaps start to implement them in their teaching. Inspiring Science is trying to help teachers of STEM subjects in the EU begin to use IBL in their classrooms and these videos form part of a training programme. It is good to have these discussions to help teachers think about what methodology they think will work best for them, but teachers must be open to change.

IBL is the best way of learning for lifelong learners. I am a school principal for over 15 years and the result I have seen through the IBL system is just fascinating. How kids will develop many skills but not limited to just the topic they get from the teacher is just wonderful.

IBL is just another teaching methodology. There are others that you can choose from like Project Based learning (PBL1) Problem Based Learning (PBL2). PBL1 methodology can be used by Engineering faculties as well as structural engineering such as Architecture and Building while Humanities, Arts, Mathematics and some aspects of Architecture and Buildings can use Problems based. As Scott Crombie said earlier, if you are a trained (TQ), then you have the liberty to learn how to adept, adopt, adapt and improvise to be Innovative teacher at what ever level you find yourself in. Teaching methods did not grow over night. Each method has been well researched. You should learn to read the gestures of your students which teaching method they enjoy using to learn better. You as a teacher/lecturer are the carver/artist of your classroom/blackboard.
