So I think that an intensive outpatient program is really beneficial for anybody that's struggling with everyday life, and maybe they've been seeing a therapist for a little while and don't feel like they're able to really see the benefit, there may be still really struggling. And part of what I really love about an i o p is the group aspect.
I think that group does something that individuals can't, you are with a group of kindred spirits who are experiencing similar things to you.
It is about genuine connection, it is about having that face to face contact with not just a therapist, but other people that really understand what you are going through some of whom have been where you are and can give you feedback, which is really fulfilling to them to feel like they're helping you out.
And then others who are struggling can feel like there's hope that there is a sense of being part of something and seeing somebody else achieve and graduate out of that group.
Group is really this microcosm of things that we can work on, that are happening externally, but we can work on that in group. And so it is this really genuine connection of people that get to be vulnerable with each other and can help each other. And that sense of closeness in group is something that is really important and very different from doing individual therapy.
So another benefit of IO P is the comprehensive treatment, not only are you in a group with other people that might be experiencing very similar issues that you're going through.
You also get time with somebody who can help with academic vocational skills, everything from budgeting to time management, helping fill out paperwork, if you need a grant, or you're trying to get loans for college, maybe even an application for college helping write resumes.
The other really important piece is the multifamily group. So you get to work with the other individuals in your group and their families so that the family is able to learn what you're working on in the group and how that impacts the family lives.
Because I think that often we take one person and we have them change their behaviors change the way they're thinking about things. And then we put them back in this exact same situation and expect the entire situation to change.
And I always think of it kind of like a baby mobile, when you pull on one piece, all the other pieces have to redistribute it and change. And that's part of what happens in an IEP group with family change is that everybody changes the dynamics that are going on in the family to create a more healthy, family dynamic as well as individual dynamic.
And the other piece is the provider piece. So meds can be really, really important in recovery. And so having a provider that really spends some time with you and talks to you about your meds gives you a place to talk about concerns you might have about meds about what's going on with your medications can be a vital point of contact in treatment and recovery.
So in Iop programming, one of the important pieces can be meeting with the provider. We have providers who meet with our clients initially to talk about meds to see if that is a fit to see if the meds they are on are working or not. And the therapist can help be part of that conversation.
Because a lot of times I think there's a lot of stigma around meds and people may not feel comfortable. I also know that a lot of people feel like they have to acquiesce to whatever a medical provider says.
And they don't always feel like they have time or the right words to articulate what their meds side effects are. So in our program, the therapist talks to the provider as well as the client to help bridge that to talk with the client about how to specifically ask for what they need and want from the medical provider to give them the tools not only with our provider but when they get set up with an outside person.
How to talk about their med needs, and what's working or hasn't worked in the past so that they don't feel like they don't have a space to be able to express that. So they'll get to see our provider multiple times throughout treatment to ensure that the meds are working or at therapeutic dosage, that there are no adverse side effects.
