Donated platelets for the first time today. I donated blood last year for the first time and nearly fainted in the chair as soon as the needle came out. Found out I was A+ and it's more beneficial for me to donate platelets, so I made an appointment. They did stick me in both arms, but I allowed them to because the process is faster if you have blood drawn from one and the other receiving back. Long story short, I felt fine afterwards. I didn't feel even slightly dizzy so it's a win-win for me and the donor center :)

One handy tip for blood platelet donors - drink a pint or more of full-fat milk a couple of hours before you donate. The anti-coagulant binds to free calcium in your system and causes side effects (sharp tingling sensations, particularly in the mouth) if there's not enough calcium spare. With the milk in your system, you have plenty of spare calcium and the discomfort is minimized. I always knock back plenty of milk before I donate platelets. You can feel the difference.

+Meranda take a calcium tablets. and i can't stress the importance of laying in an absolute comfortable position, otherwise, your hand will go numb in a matter of minutes and you'll be stuck there for an hour.

Thank you very much for these nice and interesting videoclip. I was inspired by this clip and started myself giving platelets for the first time although I had a long experience with giving plasma on the AUTOPHERESIS-C machine. Now we are 7 weeks later and in that period I did 3 platelet donations on the TRIMA ACCEL machine and I can tell you it works pretty good! The only thing I advise is to take good care of your calcium input: drink plenty low-fat milk, eat plenty of yoghourth and take the Ca ++ drink of your donor centrum, especially if you are 90' on the machine.

Second donation today nervous at first but will be continuing to donate till told otherwise take a laptop watch a film or use the Wifi after your first donation they will feed and water you the second time while you are donating platelets, Don't hesitate the benefits for the recipient are worthwhile and they drop you a text notifying you of the receiving hospital once your donation has been distributed :-) 71 minutes 1st donation - 68 minutes 2nd donation !!!!! (I am based in the UK)

I currently have donated 16 gallons of platelets with Vitalant in Merced, CA. There is never a "dull" moment in the process. Been going regularly since 2016.

I have O+, yet they said I had such good platelet levels that they'd like me to donate platelets from now on, so I'm looking up videos like this to prepare. The needle is small eh? That's a plus!

I can donate whole blood, no problem, but the thought of my blood going through a machine and coming back in, doesn't sit well with me. I think of all those dialysis patients who contracted HIV with an infected machine (yeah, yeah, I know it's not the same, but I still think about it.) Take it all and don't put it back in :)
@vincentlarochelle6521
@vincentlarochelle6521 6 лет назад
There are very stringent requirements and procedures for these machines to ensure that doesn't happen. There are also stringent requirements on donors to ensure they do not have HIV. Even if someone had HIV and didn't know it, when they would give either their whole blood or platelet donation it would be tested for HIV. All blood products go through stringent testing procedures and they would definitely notify the person with HIV.

Drink full-fat milk (at least 1 pint) before you donate platelets. The anti-coagulant binds itself to free calcium in your system so, the more calcium you have to spare, the less discomfort you get.

On this machine it takes me about 50 minutes ^^ It's not hard to donate platelets, but you need good veins. Otherwise you'll be disqualified (but still able to donate full blood)
@xXrockyiszhereXx
@xXrockyiszhereXx 9 лет назад
Haha yeah my good veins is in the right arm but its annoying holding the arm in the same position Dx. It took me an hour and 30 minutes but they lowered the number to 6.8 x 10 because my arm couldn't stay in the same position for too long.

@ljeonjko
@ljeonjko 7 лет назад
+Teri Weidt i was wandering about that, too. i get the the tubes and bags are all brand new and sealed, but i didn't know how the centrifuge part works. however, your blood never comes in contact with the centrifuge, instead, it's flown into a jar that rotates, and the jar is disposable. reference: /watch?v=gOUcq8l5yHg

The complete plastic apheresis set (separation belt, lines, pump, sensor and valve cassette) is disposable and is only used one time for you.

You can still donate whole blood. Your whole blood will be used as it is needed - sometimes they use it as whole blood and sometimes they separate it out and use the individual parts. Possibly depends on your red/plasma/platelet numbers.

I feel pretty wonky after giving blood. Is this going to be anything like that?
@Mocita
@Mocita 4 года назад
Eddie Vasquez No. You’ll get a good portion of your blood back while your platelets are taken. There’s a chance you might feel lightheaded, but not as much as if you were donating blood. You will have an anticoagulant flowing through your body, but that will clear out through the day. The return process will feel weird, getting cool liquid mixed with your blood, but then it will return to drawing.
@eeeddddddiiieee
@eeeddddddiiieee 4 года назад
I felt pretty weird after the experience. My body got extremely tingly afterwards and I felt extremely tired but it went away quickly. Probably after an hour I felt back to normal.

Vincent2wice the people reading these comments are considering donating platelets and terrified about the size of the needle. His spelling will effect no one whose anus is stick-free.

on the TRIMA it is a 17G needle. this is smaller then a 16G needle used for donating plasma on the AUTOPHERESIS-C

Well, I have been told that I have more than average of platelets and they have asked me to donate. BUT after watching this video, I wonder how they sterilize this machine?? Because the blood is cycling in it and goes back to the donator !!!

They use single use sterile tubing to move your blood, and then replace the tubing after every donation.

Doesn't hurt any more than a regular donation. It's the typical "pinch" they warn you about. Less than 5-10 seconds later it's like nothing happened.

Not any more than getting a vaccine or donating whole blood. It’ll probably pinch when it goes in and gets pulled out, but it’s over in a second.
