1 is a dial telephone mechanism. 2 is used with an Ether capsule to start a diesel engine by inserting the capsule and closing the lid to puncture it allowing it to go into the intake manifold.

Sounds reasonable to me.. I have never see an ether capsule in my 71 years, but there was a lot of stuff I missed that was in use in the first half of the 20th century. ‘Shotgun’ starters I am familiar with.. but not these.

1 is a rotary dial from the old telephones 2 is an ether injector pot , it uses a jelly capsule that is filled with liquid ether to help start the engine. It is placed after the air filter on the intake pipe to the engine.

Everyone probably already knows this, but the governor on the rotary dialer is needed to space out the pulses created by the switch. It is automated telegraphy.

Both of those are very interesting items! I am reasonably sure the first item is a pulse dialing mechanism from an old rotary dial telephone. The Gits cup looks like something I have seen before on a very old marine generator engine. Someone had told me it was for spraying starting fluid into the engine, which I had not quite understood. In seeing other comments, now I understand that it is for ether capsules. Thank you for keeping up these videos! They are always very enjoyable to watch!

We used an item like #2 on Diesel engines. We had a can with gel cells filled with starter fluid and before starting the engine we would put a gel egg into the cup and close the lid, and the egg would be punched and the starting fluid would be released and then we would hit the starter and off you would go.

#1... indeed, all of us olders that ever took a phone apart, or even listened as you dialed, would know it. The mechanisms were wonderful gadgets, #2 ... I’m stumped. I have seen every oiler, zerk and alemite grease fittings in common use, but that piercing insert in the oiler cup has me.
@davidrush4908
@davidrush4908 2 месяца назад
The dial mechanism was pretty obvious from the sound, but did you also notice the interruptor contacts. The way the phone sent the dial pulses was by breaking the circuit in fairly evenly spaced pulses. You could even dial a number manually by tapping the number out on the cradle hook switch if you wanted to. The central office switching machinery that mechanically interpreted the pulses was also impressive. I saw one shortly before it was decommissioned and replaced with an electronic system. It consisted of rack after rack of linear and rotary solenoid activated switches. The constant noise was horrendous. The whole system was powered by a room of 48 volt lead acid batteries.

Number 1 Very similar to the ones in UK. It’s the back of a ‘dial and select mechanism’. For a telephone. The ratchet wheel allows quick selection of the dial number (or letter) then engages the gears to return relatively slowly allowing the contacts to be made and broken by the cam; the centrifugal governor limits the speed. With old systems, multiple relays at the automatic exchange had to have the pulses along the telephone lines limited in their frequency. Number 2 I’ve seen one similar on an old oil engine (similar principle to a Diesel engine - induction; compression; ignition; exhaust cycle). In the oil engine I saw, for a cold start, cotton wool soaked in highly volatile hydrocarbons was placed under cap, the item being located via an isolation valve, in the inlet manifold. Useless piece of information: Both in the USA and the UK, early telephone systems had two bare wires strung between insulation terminals on wooden poles. In a wind, the bare wires would touch each other and a pulse sent to the exchange. This might be inconvenient, but operators in the exchange - or even those with telephones at home, could easily recognise single random pulses. It was decided in the UK that for emergency services, a clear pulse signal had to discriminate between the deliberate dialling and accidental, wind induced pulses. The largest number on the dial was chosen - 9 - since no wind could send nine pulses equally spaced. We went all the way in the UK with 999, while you in the USA had the same idea, but only chose the first number that could not be mistaken - 911. 👍🇬🇧👍🇺🇸👍
@rc300xs
@rc300xs 2 месяца назад
I’m curious if the system in the UK worked differently than over here? Over here it wouldn’t matter it the lines touched each other in the wind as it would just send a brief off-hook loop to the exchange. Over here the pulse dialer breaks the loop instead of making a loop. Misdials to 911 happen over here when the pair is shorted due to a problem on the line, water corrosion etc. That short is mostly there, but comes and goes rapidly due to water in the cable etc. If there are 9 breaks…a short…1 break…short…then one more break…then a short, now the call is made to 911. We have something called Plant Lockout to help prevent this. If a line is shorted (off-hook) and no dial attempt is made the exchange will send an off hook warning tone and then go into plant lockout. The lockout will clear once the loop has been broken (trouble fixed) for a set amount of time.

@@rc300xs I’m not an expert about the telephone exchange systems, but I do know that here (mainly railways) existing telegraph systems could be used and there would be a need to make communication between the signal boxes ‘fail safe’. We used the Wheatstone telegraph system and initial long distance communication could be via existing wires (hence ‘sending a wire’). Just as shown on nearly every American western, similarly it was here that the railway station had important telegraph offices that the public could use. The main (Victorian) railway station in my home town of Bolton (north of Manchester UK), that is a later addition to the original 1838 ‘Bolton to Manchester Railway’, still has a building with etched glass windows with ‘telegraph office’ on. Bolton used to be a massive cotton manufacturing and engineering town (some 220 cotton mills*, heavy engineering and supplementary industries), so initially mill offices became the first to have their own equipment followed by wealthy mill owners’ houses. * Look up ‘Swan Lane Mill, Bolton’ on the internet. It’s a ‘listed building’ and cannot be demolished. I admit I’m boasting a bit here, it was the world’s largest cotton spinning mill in its day. 👍🇬🇧👍🇺🇸👍

Thanks Mr Pete. 1. Is a rotary phone dial and I'm guessing that 2. Is a for putting additives in the fuel system. The sharp part would puncture the little foil seal on the end of the skinny necked bottle. Update; after reading the comments, the ether pot sounds more likely.

#1 is a pulse dialer from an old rotary phone. It would momentarily break the circuit loop, the phone switch would see that and count the number of breaks. (0=10). This was all before DTMF tones came along with switches like the Nortel DMS etc. Some older pay phones could be fooled into making free calls by simply flapping the hook switch and counting the breaks, leaving a pause between each number. This was eventually remedied.

1 is the mechanism from a telephone for pulse dialing. 2 is to add starting gas for some engines in the form of ether (Diethyl ether). We used them for some old reserve power generators when I did my military service -those had a screw cap lid though if I remember correctly. Which for me is amusing since this makes both parts relevant to that time since I worked with signals for the Swedish air force (phone, radio and more)

When I was a fill in field installer for the local telephone company I used to tune the speed by massaging the fly weight springs. There was a test number we called which returned beep tones to tell us it was slow or fast. The ring signal return USED to be the third ground wire too. One time I had two of the wires hooked up and then my eyes lit up from the incoming 90v 20hz ring. But the bell didn't sound since the ground wasn't hooked up yet. I handed the lady the receiver and said "it's for you". She looked VERY skeptical as she hesitently said "Hello?...." and I watched her eyes go wide with wonderment and perhaps just a little fear as she looked back at me....

I am old but if I have ever used #1, I don't remember it. Whatever it is, the on/off cycle was quick. The quick install mounting bracket is what throws me. I wonder what liquid was being dispensed into the Gits oiler. Must have been either an aluminum or plastic container that would fit inside and drop its contents into the puncturing tube and cup, not much larger than the cup itself. It is a wonder the cup did not break off from Bubba using it.
