I really like this style. The kicks and punches still hit solid like Kyokushin (since that is one of the forms used in the style) and there is no or little blood to worry about. In addition, good ground fighting techniques.

I'm definitely an MMA fan, but honestly, I think this is much more entertaining to watch. The gi makes judo throws more common, the fighters stand closer and trade much faster and more exciting volleys of strikes (possibly because the headgear makes knockouts harder so the fighters don't have to be so careful, possibly because the karate training emphasizes snappiness more than Muay Thai or boxing might), and the time limits for newaza make the groundfighting portions much more aggressive.

Couldn't agree more... besides this there's the fact that the great Lyoto Machida not only practices other martial arts, but excels it, for instance, he is a BJJ black belt also and a well known Sumo player .

Very Cool video! So much talk of style, when what we see here is men testing themselves, not their style. I am still amazed that folks continue to debate about what "style" is best. Every style is best and no style is best. There are no superior martail arts, only superior martial artists. True warriors use whatever is at hand. This video demonstrates that well. If the range allows a well placed kick, then kick, but if a grapple is needed then grapple. Thank you for the post! Awesome stuff

@3876samf Karate and British bare-knuckle boxing were almost identical, in moves, stance, guard, everything. Both emphasised low hand position, straight punches, both used kicks, but they were most commonly front kicks, both had throws, most common was a 'cross-buttocks' throw, similar to a O-goshi, Tsuri-goshi or Tsurikomi-Goshi. Both had clinch fighting, and used parries and 'Karate blocks' over covering up, both were complete systems.

Thanks for the advice, I do that already. I still enjoy watching MMA, and I don't mind a bit of ground fighting but when a whole 15 mins fight is on the ground I gotta be honest, I find that a bit boring to watch. I'm not saying it's not technical or too easy on the ground, far from that. But as a spectator I'd rather see a good standup fight :) and it's even more interesting when it's with MMA size gloves ;)

The helmets are used for protection.Not everybody wants to be a hyped gorila in a cage with a nose broken 123234234 times and no teeth.It gives a great realistic,practical and effective approach to fighting sports.It doesn't lack techniques and it combines the best martial arts there is.I'm 100% sure that if you take those ''MMA fighters'' off of steroids and put them on the ring with a Kudo Champ in one category,the cage dog won't stand a chance.

lol fella, half the guys in kudo and kyokushin are on steroids too. Dont be naive. Russians love testosterone and they dominate in Kudo. Kyokushin on the other hand, the steroid use in there has long been not well kept secret, just take a look at the stars from the 90s who went onto K1 kickboxing fame, try to tell me those physiques are just hard work, please, they look better than amateur bodybuilders. There probably hasnt been a single K1 HW GP winner since its inception who wasnt on the juice.

@3876samf A Karate chamber is called Hikite, or pulling hand, the hand is pulled to the hip to simulate grabbing the opponent and pulling them into the punch, not all Karate has a low chamber, many take high or mid chambers, and as a boxer, I can tell you the that the force generation between a high chamber Tsuki and a boxing cross is identical, because they are the same. A punch starts from wherever the hand happens to be. The hand on the hip is a grab.

Are they still doing these tourneys in Japan today? Pretty interesting and fun to watch. Just as good to watch as MMA in the ring. A different way of fighting for a belt or trophy. Use a lot of similar fighting format so to speak.
@Hankthejollyspoon
@Hankthejollyspoon 13 лет назад
@3876samf The meat of Karate is straight punches, Oi-tsuki, front hand straight, Gyaku-Tsuki, rear hand straight, and Kizami-Tsuki, the Jab. And actually, Karate IS quite rare in MMA, and many K-1 champions use Karate, Andy Hug was K-1 champ once, and runner up twice, Sem Schilt was champ 4 times, and a successful MMA fighter, Glaube Feitosa was a K-1 Grand-Prix winner, and KO'd Overeem, Fransisco Filho has had two K-1 titles. Bas Rutten, Kikuno and GSP all do Karate in MMA, as does Machida.

this a great video, and i am just now learning about kudo. what is the difference between this art and traditional jjj. traditional jjj has throws, ground fighting, and striking. kudo seems to have the same thing. a big difference between this and cage fighting is this seems more geared towards self defense and the street. i see everything being used from elbows to head butts. i think i even saw a foot stomp.

@3876samf Karate, like Judo and Japanese Jujutsu, rely a lot on sleeve/lapel/belt grips and many other things rendered impossible by MMA rules, Karate especially is designed for 'bang and scram' self defence, or one strike or combination and then withdrawal, They might not be designed for MMA, but like all other MA's they just require alteration to be effective, they aren't mechanically inferior, in substance.

@3876samf I can argue against it because you are wrong. A Chudan Kamae (mid level guard position) is nearly identical to a Bareknuckle Boxing guard. A Jodan Kamae (high level guard position) is very similar to a traditional MT guard, but with palms in, not out. Taisabaki is body positioning or movement, and is very similar to boxing footwork, though focused more on side-stepping and swaying than bobbing and weaving.

@g0han86 To be honest it depends a lot on your instructor. In my experience I studied Shotokan Karate primarily and attained a brown and two stripe belt, which is the last belt before black. I also had experience in boxing, juijitsu, kickboxing etc. Because of this I was able to jump from white belt to yellow belt which is quite a jump. The thing is Kudo really is a mixed martial art, and just doesn't have the popularity it deserves.

Hi, If you check few videos you'll surely notice that they get knocked out when hitted to the face with a bare knuckle punch. The helmet will protect you from facial damage BUT will not avoid a Knock out, so... why should they keep their guard down?
@Hankthejollyspoon
@Hankthejollyspoon 13 лет назад
@Woolfrey Actually, whilst I am grateful for your support, Kudo isn't to bad, whilst certainly less painful than true bare-knuckle, a good shot still has fight ending capacity. But yes, compare, if you have fought outside a dojo/gym, how long fights last compared to a match. I've boxed, for longer than I have done Karate actually, and there is no comparison, covering up is useless, bare-knuckle necessitates long distance, caution, and proper blocking. Or you get punched and fall over.

Kudo (Daido Juku) combines all elements of fighting style with the specific focus on Kyokushin Karate. So, this is MMA-style Kyokushin Karate. Near the end of the video, Azuma Takashi, the founder of this art, is shown, doing the tameshiwari.

A better technique is a more efficient technique is saving more energy/cardio/strength in the fight; a fight is a battle of attrition, whoever runs out of energy/cardio/strength/(heart)/etc loses. Thus, you need to have your techniques at optimum level because when you're matched up appropriately, all physical characteristics are equal. (hence weight classes).

@3876samf Not everyone is a Gracie, and Helio lost to Kimura, quite badly, Kimura did Judo (and Karate, but mostly Judo). The Gracies won the early UFC because they fought strikers and wrestlers, for the most part. Up until then no strikers had addressed the ground game, and most of the wrestlers were poor at subs. They took a sword to a knife fight without telling anyone.

It's not that I don't love BJJ (I train it) or that I can't appreciate the kind of skill and technique that can go into a long ground war that might look boring, aimless and inactive to a casual observer. But I think that as entertainment the sport profits immensely by making rules that encourage fighters to go for submissions quickly and aggressively.
@NewYorkSucks76
@NewYorkSucks76 11 лет назад
I do submission grappling and when i watch mma and people are just trying to hold the guy down it is boring to me as well. It's almost impossible to attack someone that is on top of you if all that they want to do is hold you down because they provide no openings to submit or sweep them. It's not really fighting if that is your objective. You could never finish someone by just holding them down.

In Kudo you get strikes in your face and you can be knocked down, is the same as the boxers that use gloves when they fight.
@gesshugh9976
@gesshugh9976 6 лет назад
Also, I thought it was more important to learn how to NOT get hit. Taking a hit is all well and good, but you can't be sure you won't get knocked out. Better to be able to hit, and not get hit back. That's most of boxing, isn't it, hit him, don't let him hit you?
@carlosfernandopradagarcia6415
@carlosfernandopradagarcia6415 6 лет назад
Yes you are right, for this reason Kudo approximates to a real fight because the opponent tries to strike you with all the power in order to learn how to avoid the hits effectively using a realistic approach, but at the same time avoiding unnecessary and dangerous accidents.

I have to disagree with billysue, on the comment he made about head defence. Yes the helmet does offer some sort of protection, but from my experience I believe it makes you more vulnerable to head attacks as it gives more area to hit. Also one clean shot to the head is a point scored or a knockout so it would be in someones best interest to keep there hands up. I don't mean to disrespect anyones opinion I am just sharing my own.

Everybody says that Kudo is shit because of these helmets, and haters say that mma is better because of this. And I may say that it is not. Because the helmet leaves your chin open, so it is avaivable to K.O. your opponent, but the helmet protects you from bruises or cut, it also protects your eyes and your whole head. So if you want to learn to fight, Kudo is the best desicion because it's like mma with safety, but techniques are the same :)

I tried both. When I took Wing Chung, another student was teaching me. It was hard to learn, hard to an ackward as hell. Those shin kicks are dangerous. I went to work limping for two day. Muay Thai was secondary in that school. It was a lot of kicking the bag. I'm sure it's dangerous. But If I started younger in the Wing Chung vs Hapkido, Karate, & TKD, my confidence would be big, not quite as your ego, chosen one, opps my bad chasen 14 lol. take care,, past bed time.

@3876samf And for your information, standing submissions are motor control, not pain compliance, which is notoriously dodgy. Positions are useful, as a part of sparring against other BJJ fighters, if you ARE taken down, get back up asap. TKD is just as good as any other art, WTF Olympic TKD isn't the same as proper TKD, for example, the only difference syllabus wise between MT and TKD is the clinch and the round kick, and TKD has a couple of extra kicks and some grappling.

Because it looks pretty much the same. I just said that at 2:25, he get knees a few shot to the head. He didn't put his forearms to block the knees, like they always do in UFC when in a clinch. @Hankthejollyspoon Hey, I never said Kudo was a bad thing. I think engaging in some full contact fighting, even with padding on, is crucial to developing good fighting skills. But as you can see from the comments here, too many guys fight with gloves on and are going to get a rude shock when someone's knuckles cut up their face. Too much contact/heavy bag work creates sloppy technique. Non contact/air strikes are good for technique but bad for developing power.

In Kudo you get strikes in your face and you can be knocked down, is the same as the boxers that use gloves when they fight, they use gloves in order to avoid fractures in the bones of their face, nevertheless they can be knocked down too. So, the best self defense skill that you can learn is developing the proper reflexes to avoid the strikes in a fight as much as possible: is very difficult for any person to resist many strikes with a lot of force in the face, you can not harden your nose or the bones of your face.
@gesshugh9976
@gesshugh9976 6 лет назад
Firstly, A tournament isn't a fight. It's a sporting event that allows you to practice fighting technique in a, relatively, safe environment. Secondly, Lol, do you even know how knockouts work? You can break someones skull and not knock them out. You can also knock them out if you could swing them around fast enough. Also, kudo has one of the highest knock percentages for combat sports. Which leads me to my third point... Thirdly, People drop like flies at Kudo tournaments. You get knocked out, the helmet just keep you from breaking your face, or any part therof, so you don't look like a delinquent at work tomorrow. Here, there should be some knockouts in there, I think: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-M5AvCcLwaJQ.html

Yes you are right, for those reasons a kudo combat is one the most similar to a real fight (among the martial arts) because you can be knocked down but without breaking the bones of your face, therefore Big Bad Bert is wrong when they say that "if you fight with face protection you are NOT fighting, the possibility of getting ko via strike to the head is what makes fighting fighting"

Well, it's similar to some type of fight. Removing the helmets would make it more similar, but would also make it less safe, and harder to train/compete in. Also, a lot of Kudoka train Kudo because of health reasons. Some have bad noses that will bleed way too easily, others have old eye/nose/mouth/jaw(face) injuries. Some like to wear contacts. None of these would be a big deal in a fight, you would just live with it, but it would cause constant issues in repetitive training. So a lot of people have something that would hold them back in other full contact arts(boxing,kickboxing,MMA,etc..), but don't want to train without punching the head(Kyokushin,BJJ,TKD,etc...). So Kudo is a good alternative.

@3876samf BJJ isn't totally useless, but just about any other grappling art would serve you better. How much of BJJ is throws? Smaller amount than Judo.
