Based on my previous video • Old laptop Screens on ... I had many questions about what is LVDS ( Low Voltage Differential Signalling), I hope to answer that in this video without getting too technical.
I am to give you enough info so you can select the right cables and controller for your LCD panel.
using this link will help me run the channel if you then purchase from Banggood. I will get a small commission but you pay no more.
use this link for other items from Banggood.

Time traveling from 2023 - Incredibly useful information. I repurpose old iMacs and am trying to learn how to build my own LVDS controller. This video was a great overview. The links are also very welcome. I'm going to watch your video on programming the controllers. Thanks much and continued success!

LVDS is also used for SCSI interfaces.

hi. I wonder if someone can help me with a dilemma. I have an old Lenovo G500 laptop that uses an LVDS 1 channel 6 bit screen with the resolution of 1366×768 - 40 pin connector. This is an horrible TN pannel and I would like to change it with an 1080p IPS pannel. I stumbled upon this model: LP156WF4 SLC1 which is 1080p, IPS. The problem is that this new screen is LVDS 2 channel 6bit. Would it work with my laptop if the old screen was only single channel? I don't know if the Lenovo G500 motherboard can provide a 2 channel LVDS signal. Both screens have 40 pin connectors (the location of the connectors is different but that's not a problem for me). thanks

Thank you helpful information , how i can get the lcd controller board offline coz my country block & ban all the online shipping stuff... i mean where these sellers get these board ?? it is from old screen or something coz i don't think this boards is manufactured for use like this .... also i'm programmer and i have experience in Raspberry PI so any idea where i get these can help here

Excellent videos, thank you! I am wondering in case of even/odd lanes for LVDS (dual channel concept?), are the even/odd lanes referring to the actual physical even/odd pixels? Say even: column 2, 4, 6, ... and odd: column 1, 3, 5, ...? (Means essentially half of the screen is driven by data coming up on one of the two sets of 4 twisted pairs). I imagine if I have a screen of 2400 x 900 @ 60 Hz, 8 bit color depth and 4 subpixels (RGBW), I would essentially have 2400 x 900 x 60 x 8 x 4 = 4.15 Gbits of data per second, requiring dual channel/port?

LVDS = an electrical standard, not a protocol en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Low-voltage_differential_signaling , what your asking about is the protocol. This is a good description of the display protocol as regarding implementation on an FPGA so it goes into detail www.element14.com/community/community/designcenter/zedboardcommunity/minized/blog/2019/03/04/driving-a-laptop-lcd-using-an-fpga

I had two old broken laptops that I disassemble to use their screens for a project. I was told that in order to make them work I have to look for the specific lcd controller board for each of them. But I was told that because the screens I have uses the 40pin connector, I can just buy any lcd control board that uses the 40pin connector and I should be fine. I'm confused.

From what I have seen (And i'm still investigating for my next video in this series) most of the boards are programmed with the target resolution so you need to get one that matches that (They are programmable with a special programmer, I dont have one), just include your resolution in the search criteria, the bit that seems to be configurable after that is the number of bits... 6, 8, 10 etc, this will determine the number of colors the board will send to the board 262K, 16Million and a huge amount :) etc, this color depth can be adjusted with a built in menu (From what I can see). If your display is using CCFL back-lighting then you probably will need a 30 pin cable if your display is under 1920x1080 60fps., if it has LED back-light then probably a 40 pin cable. You will also need to ensure you cable has the right number of twisted pairs, based on the data sheet for the panel, you will see it has 1 or two ports/lanes, and typically 6 or 8 bits so higher resolution with 16M colors will need at least 10 twisted pairs, the panels I had in the first video only needed 4 twisted pairs as it was only 1366 x 768 and 6 bit color. Hope that helps for now. I will be doing another video once I have figured a few more things out.

Hello, i have a Dell Precision 5520 that comes with a touch 4k Sharp IGZO screen, i have the same exact model panel but the matte non-touch revision, it passes and powers the Dell screen diagnostics test but wont show the bios or boot into an operating system. Im using a non-touch 40pin LVDS cable but i think there might be a misconfigured pinout since the 5520 was never offered with a matte non-touch screen. Do you know of a way to find the pinout for the Dell Precision 5520 motherboard?
@TheBreadboardca
@TheBreadboardca 3 месяца назад
What you need is the exact model of the led display, the details are typically printed on the back of the display panel. With this info you can Google the details. If the display is typical then the pin out should be standard. But a 4k display will probably have at minimum 2 channel but probably more. Post the display model and make if you can't find the details and I'll have a quick search and see what I can discover for you

@@TheBreadboardca Its the Sharp LQ156D1JW33 thats the exact model but they offer both matte and non-touch, in the Thinkpad world the pinout for touch/non-touch is slightly different and Dell never offered a non-touch version of the Sharp LQ156D1JW33 but whats strange is Dell themselves used the Sharp LQ156D1JW33 to make their own custom display assembly infused behind glass where they added the touch feature to this panel themselves somehow. So i was hoping to find the pinouts so i can make the matte version work since the glossy screen hurts my eyes. Bliss computers sells the matte/glossy non touch Sharp LQ156D1JW33 and advertises it as compatible but its seems i need an LVDS cable that doesnt exist.

@@jakkiryanov9859 As I suspected, this display has a different interface, it uses eDP not LVDS, The eDP interface allows higher transmission speeds as opposed to LVDS cables. eDP also uses less conductors on your cable design reducing space and possible cost depending on the design. Another benefit of eDP cabels is that they allow you to easily connect your source (such as a person computer) directly to an LCD. hwew is the details on panellook.com www.panelook.com/LQ156D1JW33_Sharp_15.6_LCM_overview_34287.html so an LVDS adapter will not help here, you will need one supporting eDP, so far I have not rtied any as I have not come across a display needing one. I hope it helps.

Hello i have a 40 pin 6 bit 2ch lcd screen, could i use a 40 pin 6 bit 1 ch lvds cable to connect it to the control board?
@TheBreadboardca
@TheBreadboardca 8 месяцев назад
You would loose some of the colors, I don't think the controller or screen tries to reconfigure to use a single Channel, you can buy just a 2 channel cable quite cheap, just make sure it has the right connector
