Very well said and explained, Mike. Some of my favorites that come to mind are Card College Book #2, (theory section of course, but the whole series is great), by Roberto Giobbi and Five Points of Magic by Juan Tamariz. Five Points is more about communicating though, but if you apply that AND theory, you'll be unstoppable.
I think the main reason so many people think learning from watching the trailer is all you need is because they are used to learning from crappy RU-vid tutorials where the 'teacher' doesn't understand the performance subltities (normally because they just learned the trick the same day they shoot the 'tutorial') so they incorrectly assume that is what proper tutorials are all like too.
Darwin Ortiz is funny, his book Strong Magic he talks about being a dynamic and engaging performer. That is good advice. But when your watch Darwin Ortiz perform card magic he's BORING as a dead fish? Darwin Ortiz needs to read his own book, LOL!
