Hiii! I love your videos and I just have a few questions. Is there a chance you can talk about the schooling you went through and the process starting from the beginning from applying to your school? 2nd question, is there any schools that you would highly recommend? 3rd, I’m a music major planning on transferring to a university for music therapy, but there’s only three schools here in California that offer that program, is there another path I can take for a back up that can still lead me into becoming a music therapist? I’d leave my email but… you know

Yes, I'll have to make a video about that! Do you have other questions regarding schooling and the application process you'd like to see me answer in the future video? Schools I recommend will really depend on what type of music therapy you'd like to practice. Some are more neurologic MT based, some are more improvisation based (Nordoff-Robbins), and others practice from a more humanistic approach. If you have a music degree you can apply to Master's level Equivalency programs. I believe the University of the Pacific in San Francisco has an excellent program.

My girlfriend is currently doing a masters in clinical counseling. It is said that after graduation, to learn at least one counseling modality from a certified institution. These can typically be completed within 3-5 months to a year or two max while working full time. When she was 17, she got her level 10 in flute which is university to semi-professional level but didn't go on to study music at university. Would Music Therapy be a beneficial modality for her to have in her repertoire? If so, does it require a complete re-education even after a Masters in CC or are there bridge programs that can get her a certification in MT in a reasonable amount of time, given her current career trajectory? We are in Canada.

I don't know a lot about Canadian requirements, but assuming they're similar to the US, music therapy is a completely different degree program. You won't be able to get a legitimate certification in music therapy unless you do the full degree program (and anyone who says they offer a "music therapy certification" in 3-5 months is most likely a scam).

Hi, I have a question for you.I am a music therapy student. Why do we need to explore musical instruments in music therapy?

Are there any paths to music therapy that take less than a traditional 4 years? ALso I'm curious, are there music "doulas", like is there an end-of-life music therapist "niche" in your field?

You will a degree to practice music therapy, but if you have a Bachelor's degree you can certainly apply to Master's Equivalency programs, which will take 2-3 years. No shortcuts unfortunately! And yes, definitely something like that! Many MT's do hospice work.

to be a music therapist, do you have to play the guitar or can it be a different instrument?

Usually guitar is recommended because it’s far more portable especially if you’re doing a lot of traveling. But piano is another common instrument too, just have to keep in mind that it’s harder to carry around and set up!
