Dana... our little girl is perfect at 14 months. No long term complications at all. She is thriving! Just keep a close eye on yours and ask questions. Advocate for your baby and all, I pray, will go well!

@@sabantique7070 I do. They are having a hard time getting her bags to stay on. She’s going through at least 3 a day. Her stoma and fistula are really close to her umbilical and it’s making positioning very hard for the nurses.

Oh gosh, I am truly sorry for your loss. I absolutely hate NEC because a healthy baby may get sick and die within hours. It's so scary.

Oh no..so so sad. I'm so sorry to hear that. NEC is one of the scariest diseases in the NICU and my least favorite because it can happen so quickly and many times, there is nothing you did or can do the moment it happens.

@@thenicudoc yes it happened very fast. Our neonatologist said antibiotics will help but just a few hours later he said other organs were infected. I felt really helpless. My wife and I were devastated. I just tell myself that atleast my daughter was not hurting anymore. We love her so much.

@@thenicudoc is there a cure for NEC? I just learned that the day my baby died, two other babies died of NEC too, the first one was 6 hours after, and the other baby 12 hrs after. We ran into their parents as we were claiming our son’s death certificate.

Doctor ia a babie with nec needs to be on quarantine? Our can be with others babies ?
@thenicudoc
@thenicudoc 3 года назад
If there is a reason for low immune system, then i would say probably best to keep safe. But if your child is now 6 and doing well... then I see no reason. But please, ask your pediatrician since he/ she will know your child's history best.

@@thenicudoc I ask you doctor because my daughter when baby she was remove from her incubator with 34 weeks she born 29 weeks . And they put my daughter in a room was two baby’s with nec and in days my daughter get very sick with nec . And she was doing so week . I am in Europe
@thenicudoc
@thenicudoc 3 года назад
@@doityourself-diyartfun1562 It is less likely that NEC is contagious. It's most likely that what was given or the care that was received is similar between babies. Now, there are reports of bacterial overgrowth in NICUs, but this is much less common. So you so not need to quarantine or separate a baby who has NEC from others. Hope this helps. 😊

Is intestinal perforation the same my 23.6 day baby had it he had to have surgery due to a hole in bacteria 8 days later after being born
@thenicudoc
@thenicudoc 2 года назад
There is something called "spontaneously intestinal perforation" or SIP. It usually occurs within the first few days of life and it is a different entity than NEC. It is a focal/local perforation with limited body inflammation. Usually related to perfusion problems. Babies tend to do better than with NEC, but not always. Hope your little one did well 💗

Doctor Is there any studies that have been done for premature babies that were sick from formula and beat the odds until they were older age 18-20? My daughter has always had stomach issues being born with a small stomach and being tried on every formula known until the hospital settled on soy. But now that she is older she has been in and out of the hospital since she graduated last year and they just keep saying that they can’t figure out what’s causing her colitis and sepsis. Could she possibly have NEC as an adult?
@thenicudoc
@thenicudoc 2 года назад
I am sorry but I cannot give individual advice on social media. NEC in adults does not exist, but there is something similar called Tephlitis. But please speak to your pediatrician regarding your concerns and whether a consult with a GI specialist would be warranted.

My newborn premature (35 weeks pregnancy weeks) niece (was born healthy 2,2kg, no breathing problem) but suddenly just died because of NEC, just 4 days life. she started to have breathing problem at night of 2nd day.. then 3rd day, her stomach got really big and bluish.. then 4rth day she is gone.. her doctor gave her blood tranfussion and antibiotics.. I don't know if those treatment was right or not.. because my sister and her baby are living in small city in Asia and hospital is not so good for premature baby and also because corona pandemic, it's not easy to find better hospital.. The problem is I didn't know the blood tranfusion can make NEC more worse.. how come? and how to avoid NEC and to do the treatment? it was very quick happening to my niece.. in just 4 days.. very quick and doctors there don't know what to do.. unfortunately.

Was she fed with formula ?
@maryharvey6909
@maryharvey6909 2 года назад
It sounds to me like her small hospital did everything they could do. If a baby is really sick and their blood levels dropped low, it could be the two things occur together. Someone does a study showing that babies get a transfusion and have NEC at the same time, but there are no conclusions or theories as to why. Mom probably needs a doctor to talk to her and show her that everything was done right to save the baby, the same as a big hospital. (If that’s not true, she should know that as well I guess) The parents might resent each other or actually break up over this. So hopefully the antibiotic was the same one the fancy hospital would use.

Doctor does this mean of a baby who was not born premature but its mother needed a blood transfusion and decided to breast feed but only use Enfamil formula as a supplement until moms breast milk comes all the way in but mom does not use the Similac Enfamil brand and only Enfamil can this cause the illness NEC
@thenicudoc
@thenicudoc 2 года назад
Not really. NEC is a diagnosis of prematurity. There are other intestinal diseases that mimic NEC in the term infants but this is not the same entity. Also, FORMULA does NOT cause NEC..but some studies have shown that infant who receive only breastmilk are less likely to develop NEC. Again, if you are unable to give breastmilk and need formula, please do NOT be afraid as this is better than using IV fluids or TPN alone.

Hi Dr. I’ve seen similac being linked to NEC, my micro preemie is currently having similac fortified breastmilk and I’m concerned because his belly is huge now. What would you do?
@natpie231
@natpie231 2 года назад
His belly is soft but huge X-ray showed air they said. But they want to continue fortifying his breast milk with similac to help him gain weight and harden his bones. He was born 23+3. And is now 28+4 days
@thenicudoc
@thenicudoc 2 года назад
Thanks for your question. This has been in the news lately and of course scarying many. It is important to clarify that fortifying with formula is not the same as giving formula. I think it is GREAT that you are pumping and giving your breast milk. Way to go MOM! Also, fortifying is ABSOLUTELY needed because it helps with brain growth, bone, and organ growth. Now, the Similac thing on the news is only a few batches. Your hospital show have checked. It affected lots that begun with numbers 22 to 37. All hospitals have had to make sure their formula did not come from these lots, so I am sure they checked. But please, if there are other concerns, sometimes bad things like NEC can happen regardless of formula...so do talk to your team OK? Hope this helps a little 🙏. 🤗
