When I opened a box of Dominaria it had a very distinct strong smell and my room smelled like it for months. I kinda liked it.

That interview with the smell researchers was great! You asked some dang smart questions. I guess the next step for MTG Arena is Smell-o-vision.

Hi, I'm here because of a recommendation from Spice8rack and I'm glad he did because this video was great! I started playing MTG around 2019 and have a much stronger association with the feel of some cards. Sometimes when opening pack I can tell that there is a distinct difference in cards from set to set. I've been told this may be due to different manufacturers using different techniques in making the cards. Is this true?

War of the Spark (I think?) had a totally different texture to any other set before or since and I miss it.

I've heard the same! I've heard that some cards are produced in different countries, which might bring in the additional complexity of differing regulations on the materials involved.

I was literally huffing some Yugioh cards 😂 and I was wondering why it’s smells so good. Since I was a kid. So about 22 years the first time I can remember this beautiful smell

WOW!!! This is a terrific video! thank you for making it! I started playing in January of 94. back then, wizards had the cards printed in Belgium at cartamundi. they smelled wonderful! I can't remember exactly when things changed but I sure wish we could go back to the olfactory bliss that was very early magic the gathering.

I love you analysis here!!! I collect and play with all kinds of cards! Playing cards, tarot cards, trading cards - ALL of them!!! I always had different smell associations with them but I left the details out of my reviews, since I felt kinda strange about including it when people usually only care about the visuals. I am so happy to hear that other people notice the scent too!

@@searchyourlibrary I once had a tarot deck that smelled like an awful plastic factory! The oily slick odor was so awful I did everything I could to remove it! I dabbed perfumes on the edge. I smoked them with herbs and incense. I left them to air outside! Everything that I could imagine that wouldn’t damage them terribly! It seemed like I was doing all of the ritual purification things that Spiritualists do, but I was just trying to get rid of the stink! I only managed to get the cards to smell like an old granny’s shoe closet though, lol 😆

Holy shit, this video is so well produced. Great job, this was VERY entertaining and informative. It was kinda fun to hear about the science behind the whole thing, since I'm _"that one weirdo who smells his cards when opening up packs"_ in my friend group xD We started playing with the release of Dominaria, but often bought older packs (Kaladesh, Innistrad, Ixalan, etc.). And I gotta say, the "new" card smell has always been very nice, since it's the primary one I know.

So, what ended up being the chemical in the old varnish that gives off the smell that we all crave? It would be interesting to know if it's carcinogenic or safe. Btw, I just opened up an old mtg pack and it smelled just like the 1st gen Pokémon cards that I opened as a kid. Its such a pleasant, pungent, clean, plastic-like smell.

Kaldheim is not the first time that Magic's smell has changed. I had very much the experience that you describe at some time around the release of 7th Edition, when the cards changed from a warm, bookish musk to what most current players know and, even years on, my brain still rewards me greatly for cracking open MtG poker cards. A more recent, novelty product that, for whatever reason, went back to that same, pre-7th production process.

This is extremely true. I have not smelled the 4th edition/Ice Age new pack smell since the 90s.

I bought a pack of Kaldheim the other day, just to check whast it was people were talking about. It is not the pre-7th smell. It is its own unique and weirdly more potent fragrance that I really don't like.
