What exactly is node.js? Is it a command-line tool, a language, the same thing as Ruby on Rails, a cure for cancer?
If you're new to web development, it can be a bit confusing as to what exactly node.js is and to what you should do with it, and there's a lot of information out there...most of which seems to be tailored towards genius-level developers.
So, here's a node.js introduction for those who have no idea what it is.
We're going to cover the difference between javascript in a browser vs javascript in node.js and the common uses for node.js.
To wrap it up, we're going to spin up a quick web server in node.js just to show you how easy it is.
Now, learn how to build an Express.js App!

It is not always like that. The best start to becoming a good programmer is using a Book. Read it all. Complete all exercises then move onto another one. I started with Herbert Schildt's C++ Reference book. After 3 years now I code in JavaScript NodeJS. I can easily switch modern languages because I know what happens inside above it is all abstraction. Every language is written by a human and many humen started out with C or C ++ hence, they all have many things in common :)
@Indrius
@Indrius 8 лет назад
Once you've learned one high-level programming language, switching to another is quite easy. They're all basically the same. If you really want to challenge your brain in new ways, try to learn something low-level, like assembly language which is basically machine code. You'll view abstract languages like C, JAVA, or JavaScript as easy peasy afterwards.

Node.js ships with workhorse connectors and libraries, for example, those identifying with HTTP, SSL, pressure, filesystem access, and crude TCP and UDP. JavaScript, as of now tuned for a Web program’s occasion loop condition for GUI and network events, is an extraordinary language for wiring up these connectors. You can snap connectors onto the occasion loop nearly as effectively as you can snap Lego parts together. Doing as such gives you a chance to make a straightforward, dynamic Web server in only a couple of lines of JavaScript. Anyways, read the below. This might help. www.namasteui.com/things-you-should-definitely-know-about-node-js/ -- Regards, Sourav Basak Namaste UI

clear as mud ... the word 'beginner' is false advertising - beginner means - begin at the START, install how to access it THEN start typing code! This also assumes a lot of programming knowledge - NOT a beginner's guide in any way. I appreciate you trying to help, but like most 'techies' you assume a ton of existing knowledge, hence - this is NOT a beginner's course, sorry, but I'm just fed up false hits miss-selling their content

No! Not for me. I find it redundant on existing technologies and harder to code, more messy and lengthy syntax as opposed to PHP/jQuery to do the same things. I don't know why companies want to put out their own code trying to get it adopted by the general coding community when they're clearly missing the mark of simplicity; I feel they want to create barriers for new coders to be confused where there is no need, no need at all!

1) Speed - Google is investing a lot in the Javascript v8 Engine and it is much faster compared to Ruby, PHP and Python. 2) Since you will be writing both the back end and front end in Javascript, your app can be developed much faster. There are other points as well but these are the key selling points of node.js. :)
