Yes! I feel your pain, being diagnosed at 39, now 61! I used to think God hated my guts. I've learned part of the problem is that we are missing white matter. Every day is taxing!

Same here. Research is lacking big time with NVLD and there's almost nothing that anybody can tell us about it. In 1995 it was said to be caused by damage to white matter in the right hemisphere of the brain. For 25 years after that, no further effort was made to dig into it. In 2022, a new study found that low hippocampal volume was another defining characteristic of the condition. Those causes closely resemble diseases such as Alzheimer's and MS, and would ordinarily meet the criteria of a brain injury. Targeted treatment approaches urgently need to be developed because there is no telling whether this becomes worse over time or is a static condition. At the moment the best treatment is memantine. My psychiatrist has prescribed it to me as an off label treatment for ADHD, which evidence is becoming stronger for and of which I also meet the criteria. It has improved my memory significantly and helped with cognitive processing speed. Fundamentally, I view NVLD as a memory problem first and foremost, and think we need to treat it as such.

I understand this is a frustrating disorder but I do hope you aren’t driving. Often time people with NVLD have poor visual spacial awareness. I’m not trying to be rude, I’m saying this because I care.

Testing is really the only way to know for sure. There are a lot of subtleties in diagnosing NVLD vs. ADHD vs. Aspergers, etc.

I don't think the school counselor in Alabama knew what NVLD was in 1984.

This is what I was diagnosed with when I was 40 years old. It would be great to find a cure for it.

@@GrayderFox He's talked about how and why he went for a neuropsych evaluation, because he often misses social cues and doesn't realize when he's not responding to people appropriately. If you Google videos about it, he discussed it around the time he disclosed (I think it was 2019).

ADHD is probably overdiagnosed whereas NVLD is underdiagnosed. I think that some of those ADHD-kids are in fact NVLD or something similar.

Teachers should not be diagnosing students. As far as I know, this is a uniquely American phenomenon.

@@blk986 It’s actually illegal for teachers in the US to diagnose children with medical illnesses, so no, it’s not any kind of “phenomenon” here.

Sounds like the teacher was trying to help you by sharing her suspicions so you could get it checked out.

Talk to the guidance counselor at her school. They can point you to a psychiatrist who can do the testing. That’s what we did and how we got answers. They don’t test for NVLD specifically, they test for all learning disabilities and use the results from that information to make a diagnosis. The testing is expensive and generally not covered by insurance but it’s ultimately worth it. There may be a way to find a test that isn’t as expensive. I’m not sure but the guidance counselor is a good place to start. Good luck.
