Swords and wizardry complete is a great system, I've been giving it another read lately and i think its quite a indepth system. Has rules for mass combat, Aerial combat and siege combat to help with running higher level stuff and the spells are really interesting
Savage Pathfinder is a great game based on Old School DnD. It doesn't play the same it's really a redo of the idea of OSR gaming. I would also like to recommend a game called King Arthur's Pendragon. It's an extremely well-balanced and interesting game where your motivations your reasons for being a night can actually become assets to you in combat and other types of heroic feats. I watch the session of it being played on the Dungeon Musings RU-vid channel. It was really fascinating and just felt visceral and real. The only video they have of it that I've seen as from about 3 months ago if you've never seen it I heard of it maybe people could check it out there.
OSE is an awesome product and is generating a lot of enthusiasm for the B/X version and that is a welcome thing for those of us who enjoy that version. The popular reception of OSE demonstrates how important organization and presentation are. Having said that, I will add that there are some advantages to having the original Moldvay/Cook/Marsh B/X books (at least the readily available digital product). OSE is essentially a reference and lacks the accessibility and explanatory text including the examples of play which are very helpful to anyone learning this system and the style of play that sets it apart from other versions of D&D.
Great video! Love OSE myself, and I agree with you that it is a GREAT primer for the OSR for those who are new. What a great way to introduce old school to a new generation of players! But for Vets of the game, here is a compilation of rules that are bullet pointed and easy to reference. Its a win-win!
I have been enjoying my OSE campaign, running Barrowmaze. I have found OSE to be an outstanding rule set for pure dungeon crawling so far. OSE (or B/X) is like playing D&D in Hardcore Mode! Good video. Thanks for your time and effort!
Other OSR games... Just a few suggestions for a variety of genres. Astonishing Swordsmen & Sorcerers of Hyperborea 2e (3e coming to KS this summer), Stars Without Number, Silent Legions, Worlds Without Number, Lion & Dragon, Night Shift: Veterans of the Supernatural Wars, ACKS, White Star: Galaxy Edition, Solar Blades & Cosmic Spells, and Against the Darkmaster. Against the Darkmaster is an OSR game of MERP/Rolemaster.
@@NoFunAllowed I figured listing one game that's OSR yet not based on D&D could provide a little more system variety to look at. I hope some of these peak your interest.
I am backing the current kickstarter for the OSE boxed sets, but would love to get my hands on the B/X Essentials PDFs to hold me over until I get the kickstarter books...any idea if the BX PDFs are available somewhere...i would gladly pay for them
enjoy ose for sure, i tend to blend as much as i can from ose, adnd and even 5e, trying to make things interesting even for parties that dont hire henchmen

I find this interesting but owning all the actual original stuff, it would just be repetitive. You seriously don't need retainers if you get a DM who understands balance.
@@NoFunAllowed Then it's just a hack. Balance in a DM was always stressed in the basic books. It's to bad the stories of crappy DM'S always over shadowed the good ones. Most of the bad DM's skipped the part called Forward. Especially the AD&D DM's. There was a reason we had 36 levels.
The one thing that really sucks about this game is the physical books are usually sold out and you have to get lucky to find a store that has them in stock. It really the one problem with companies that only do print runs with Kickstarters. They do do reprints on their own to meet demand.
@@NoFunAllowed Ascending AC alone is reason enough to reject Basic Fantasy. But where OSE really shines is with the Advanced options. Love those! This is one of our two current games of choice. The other is Castles & Crusades, when we want a bit more of the AD&D feel, but with streamlined mechanics.
