Have you ever wondered - What is open source?
We made this stop motion video in an attempt to explain it for anyone. This, simply to help scale the positive principles within the open source paradigm.
The video itself is open for everyone to use, modify and share. So feel free to do that!
We made this video to explain the idea of Open Source. We wanted it to be easy to understand - even for people with no prior knowledge of Open Source or Free Software. However, history is never simple. We can only urge people to do further research into the history and as such the development of open source.
Kræn Hansen wrote this blogpost to explain our thoughts behind the video: blog.bitblueprint.com/now-anyo...
Please visit socialsquare.dk/ for more information on how to apply the open source paradigm to your organization. Visit movingmonday.com/ if you want to learn more about this awesome video production!
Thanks to 黃雋 (github.com/NETivism/) for the translation of the captions into Chinese.

I like this explanation. LEGO the Movie also shows collaboration in simulated form, when protagonists beat micromanagement hell. It makes sense that you can describe many things as contribution.

The example with the skateboarders made sense, though I didn't care for it. Then again, I am not the examples target audience. However, the architecture example just seems bad. The architect should be compensated for their work, but they are just giving it away for free? I think of open source more like Sparkfun or Adafruit. They make all of their designs (?) available for free so you could modify or improve them. But they also sell the finished project which is how they profit. Maybe I am just over thinking the example.

I have a question about the example with building the house. When the couple hired company A to build there house and found out that company wasn't doing a good job and they hired company B, would they have to get John's permission as the architect to approve that because he presented them with the home options?

To qualify as Open Source, the licence MUST give the freedom to sell copies of the source code, and of the executables. However if I sell a copy of the executable, I must provide a copy of the source, via the SAME distribution channel, an no extra cost (beyond cost of distribution). See Open Source definition, and Free Software definition.

I struggle to work out what John's business model is? I understand what business models might work for an author in the context of software, but not in this example, which creates a gaping hole in the argument for those opposed to open source approaches to exploit
@natsirtt

I'd say that John is selling his services as an architect by offering houses plans (the sources) he created. By doing that, he also allows the couple to modify it as they want. Of course a real architect, following the project, would be an adviser on those modifications, telling to the couple if a modification is possible and if so, how much more it would cost to do it. Then when the project is completed, John would add the modifications to his collection of houses plans to possibly offer them to other clients. It actually is what happened to my parents four years ago when we moved by building a new house : the architect already had plans for the house on the terrain my parents bought, my father made a few modifications, he showed them to their architect who then validated them and recalculated the costs. Later the architect asked my parents if they were okay with him using this new plans as a basis for future project. I'm kind of telling a probably not so much interesting story from my life but the point is that it really is a business model some architects use, and I'm sure you see how it is profitable for everyone involved ! :)

It may be the client that pay a bit extra to Open Source the design. Or the architect Open Sources work he does in his free time, so he can use it when he changes job. Or … (This would have been a good question before Gnu and wikipedia, but now we have examples and it worked.)

The terminology used in this movie is incorrect. Open source and free software are separate terms and should not be used interchangeably: www.gnu.org/philosophy/open-source-misses-the-point.html
@LeoWattenberg
@LeoWattenberg 10 лет назад
This is true. However, explaining that to someone who still thinks that FOSS is unsafe may a bit too much for a quick video.
@SamuelWilliams
@SamuelWilliams 10 лет назад
They could have just used the terminology "Free Software" or "Open Source Software" - one or the other would have sufficed. Since they gave the example of R.S. and the printer, they should have used the terminology "Free Software". "Open Source Software" is a subset of "Free Software" as just having the source code is not enough to guarantee the user's freedom.
@MatthiasUrlichs
@MatthiasUrlichs 10 лет назад
Samuel Williams Yeah, they could have used that to explain the free-as-in-beer vs. free-as-in-speech mixup. On the other hand, even though they said "open source" they based the whole explaination on the four freedoms and they did explain that Open Source doesn't mean free-as-in-beer, which is good enough for me. Let's not split hairs when talking to people who first need to grok that being bald is not *that* desireable.
@SamuelWilliams
@SamuelWilliams 10 лет назад
Matthias Urlichs IMHO if you are going to invest a huge effort into making a video, using the correct terminology should be a priority.
@MatthiasUrlichs
@MatthiasUrlichs 10 лет назад
Samuel Williams "Free software" is co-opted by free-as-in-beer. Most people even consider adware to be "free". I agree that correct terms are important, but if the 100%-correct term does not get the message across without being misunderstood by too many people, using a 95%-correct term might be the better way for a "first contact with FLOSS" video like this. It's a judgment call and it's not my video, so I'm not going to take points from its creators because of that. Esp. as they conveyed the actual message very well IMHO.

No - but he can veto what gets into his original open source project. Their house is their business. He might not be able to support the couple with new extensions if they choose to alter their house to radically - but that is outside of the scope of this video :)

Quite a bit of incorrect information. That beginning sounded like the obligatory "homage" to the Free Software movement but it ultimately backfires. Stallman has nothing to do with the Open Source movement. Open Source has a focus on the business advantages while the Free Software focus on the ethical and moral advantages. The funniest is that the video could be used to promote how Free Software works in the business concept, but no, can't use Free, eh?

The skateboard design and modification discussion is barely analogous to " open source" as a concept...the design may be modified by the user for his or her use...but if the modification were to be mass-produced and marketed, you can be sure that the original manufacturer would examine it closely to determine if a lawsuit were required. Remember, the basis of the law is to protect intellectual property from being stolen, especially after a group of people have spent time, money, and effort in the creation of something new. The discussion of the intellectual property of the architect has absolutely no connection to the issues surrounding "open source". By definition, the design and plans an architect creates must and will be reviewed and modified by the client, the local city/town building department, and the builder. The way an architect does his or her job has no connection to how a manufacturer designs and builds their equipment, how and to what extent they utilize software controls and support, and how they govern the warranty and repair of the product purchased. By defintion, the home being built for client is not a "black box"...everything must be known and agreed to by the client. By definition, the tv, washing machine, furnace etc thst you buy has certain items that are "black box". Purposely, these items are not to be fixed, adjusted, or modified by the customer. If you do, you likely void your warranty...they are willing to fix their defects but not your handiwork gone awry. Moreover, don't you think they would have a case if you took the control board out of their equipment, copied it, and installed it in something else...all for your profit. Open source is great for some things but, in general, leads mayhem if taken to far.
