Communication is organizational not because it happens with in organizations but rather because it coordinates the activities and interpretations of multiple people. Into an organized recognizable form and sustains or alters its form for subsequent collective action. To study organizational communication therefore is to study social processes that create the dominate structures of our society. I typed as I was listening so its a paraphrase...

As an introvert, I thought when people talked they just made sound with their mouth and I didnt know their reason for it. Like "people are going to say what they're going to say, because they love to do that and I am going to stay silent because I love it".But recently, I found out if they are transferring thought to each other and make synchronization to work together.

+1 Now that I have watched the entire thing it is ironic that I have no clue what you are trying to communicate. I feel like it probably IS a good message, but I don't know what it is. Or more specifically, I don't walk away from this video with any clue of how actually think differently about communication. If your main message is in there somewhere then may I suggest it was lost in the distraction of both the animation and repetition of ideas. There wasn't a single place in the video that visually indicated to me what the main point was, so it all seems to blur together into a bunch of buzz words and abstract concepts.
@spamalangadingdong
@spamalangadingdong 5 лет назад
@@seetheclay & Jason Rodriguez: This is not the type of TedTalk animation some of us are used to, which, I think, explains why some of the animation was a little distracting. With that being said, I believe the narrator was trying to impart his belief that perception shapes reality...of an organization. An individual within an organization should take a step back and analyze why does my organization communicate this way? What bias is inherent to this form of communication? What events, actions, external influences led to this form of communication? Am I simply presenting the organization with facts and expecting them to choose my course of action based on those facts, or am I tailoring my message to the organization in such a way that they will accept my facts and my desired course of action? Do my organizational members have a more positive response when I dictate a course of action, present multiple courses of action, or simply present them with the issue and ask them to formulate a course of action on their own, presenting my opinion only after they have formulated theirs? Basically...how you communicate a "thing" might just dictate how the organization accepts that communication, especially when you consider the inherent bias and assumptions built into the current methods of communication within an organization. An example. If I think my boss only calls me into his/her office when there is an issue, then I will assume that when my boss calls me into his/her office there is a problem. The boss may not do this intentionally, but it creates a bias or preconceived belief in you that this will be a negative encounter. Maybe the boss just wants to discuss the sales figures for the last quarter, as a neutral non-punitive discussion. You, the employee, might be defensive about the discussion and less receptive to ideas/feedback/neutral discussion, even thought the boss just wanted to "talk shop" as it were. How we present ideas is just as important as the ideas themselves.

The Clay, this presentation defeated one of the main functions of communication and that is the transmission of a clear and understandable message.

The point the video is making was quite clear: that viewing organizations AS communication leads to more favorable outcomes. The purpose of the video is not to explain what those outcomes will be or how to apply this new view. This video is intended as an introduction to the field of organizational communication. It seems, and the video description backs this conclusion, that this video was developed as part of a college course in which subsequent videos and lectures would actually explain how to implement this view of communication.

en contraire to the majority of comments: LOVED the animation. VERY clever to reflect the chaos, the perfect storm that is organisations, people, processes and communications. It all ensues within organisations. The animations supported the points you made brilliantly and spoke to my creative and strategic nouse. Very much mirrored the complexities that communications navigate. Absolute A*. Made so many notes before realising there's a video download! Going to watch it again. AMAZING. Thank you in 2020 :)

Great video! You make it very easy to follow. Communication is very important and it brings everyone forward. It's critical to get the right message to the right people. But it sounds easier than it really is. Communication is also more than what is being said. Pretty often it is also what is NOT being said.

The Irony that this is from a Professor of Communication - Learn how to communicate in a more concise and quick manner. You looped in circles and didn't get to the point. Really bad explanation and leaves the audiences you're 'communicating' to confused and wondering what you are actually trying to say. Awful.. Truly awful.
@christophertelford4995
@christophertelford4995 6 лет назад
Smashnbash, you think this video from 6 years ago is truly awful? That's really harsh. Awful? On a scale from Awful to Amazing you put this video at full-awful? Not somewhere in the needs-improvement realm? Also, the fact that he's a professor of communication doesn't make him automatically an amazing video maker. That's not how education works. Professors of economics aren't all rich. Professors of art aren't all successful artists. He repeated some key points at the end to recap a nearly 20 minute long video - I think that's ok. The line "I want to dig deeper" was said three times and it felt lacking in creativity. I guess the reason I'm commenting on your use of awful, is that you post videos yourself. Your most popular video has just under 870 views. You know how hard it is to create content. It doesn't feel good for someone to come along and call your content awful after you spent hours making it, and in this case by hand. Anyway, I hope you have a great day and possibly consider using slightly less harsh descriptions of content that you don't feel are perfect. This video is not awful.
@joshuashaw2257
@joshuashaw2257 5 лет назад
@@christophertelford4995, I would not call this video awful but I do agree that the format is looping and does not get straight to the point. I watched this video for a discussion board post for my Organizational Communications class. I had to watch the video 3 times to piece everything together into a cohesive idea that could be easily understood. The video contains great material and a solid theory of the complexities of organizational communication but could have been structured to convey the point in a concise manner. There was no need for this video to be 17 minutes long just to convey this theory. Ultimately, the goal of organizational communication is to be brief, clear, and concise. Time is money. Thank you

Great comments Tottos. And the point is that all the examples of communication you mentioned literally constitute an organization as such, make it what it is, and thus the organizations exists in and through this communication, AS communication...and not that the organization merely "exists" independently and all this communication then happens IN the organization. That's the key distinction we're trying to convey in this video.

What a fantastic summary of the complexity of organizational communication. Can I get it as a poster? and how about similar videos on the holistic marketing management approach and corporate communication not to mention social scientific methods? I think the visualization does a excellent job adding a deeper layer of understanding. it is, after all, a highly professional view on communication.

1. I think we all need to "rise above" the org's expectations whenever we face difficult tasks. 2. The reason why orgcom is still in the lower league is because: (1) the field is still new, and (2) it's a jack-of-all-trades field, at least for now. Here, we borrow alot of management, psych and marketing concepts. 3. I already talked to my chums. It's because they don't have an idea what orgcom is in the first place! I think we need have to push boundaries in advocating this glorious field!

Awesome video! Thank you so much for posting this. A lot of people missed the point of the video completely. It's clear, at least to those who have taken college courses (not knocking on those who haven't), that this is an introductory video to the field and that subsequent instruction would explore the application of the view presented here. It's simply an intro video likely shown to students. Thrown up here on RU-vid outside of that setting, it's understandable that people are confused by the "lack of a point" and repetition of ideas.

Thanks! I recommend Fairhurst's book The Power of Framing and Kahan's book Getting Change Right as a start. Both deal with important organizational concepts (leadership and change, respectively) and they incorporate more of a constitutive approach to communication (though they don't come out and say that explicitly because these books are written for a broader audience and don't deal as much with the "academics" of communicative constitution). Stay in touch and let me know what you think...

6:22 - 6:37, I hear this description sometimes, a sociological condition and element of the human is outside the concept of "nature" (trees, animals, streams of water untouched or not yet tampered by human work). Humans aren't outside the parameters of "nature". Its like we forget that creatures and the environment are inevitably impacted by our very existence everyday, not the mere efforts of "Going green", as we fight for the promotion of one species, our littering which we derived from this planet, or even our presence itself will wipe out an entirely different species. Efforts are irrelevant - we cannot control the existence or extinction of creatures or our impact wholly in the planet but only within the confines of our focuses and the natural limitations of the human species/condition. Thus our biological nature has it's earthbound and fixated influence (Edit: In terms of communication I like the way you tied this concept in however after this part. As humans it's a pretty distinct and from what we know unique to Earthbound creatures how we use languages, communication, it's devices, and formats, etc.)

Matthew, your presentation is brilliant. In seventeen minutes you summarized much of what I have been evangelizing during my business career as the gospel of data mining for divining meaning from Big Data analytics, unstructured data, macro-economics, contract analysis, and financial statements. "A communications approach to our understanding of organizations" will make them all more coherent, if we just put it into practice. Please present more lessons like this. P.S. I wish that someday I could draw like your illustrator. :)

Thank you so much for your time and effort. It really is a complex subject and you have really explained it in a clear and engaging way. Congratulations to the cartoonist too!

Close to the capability framework from the Milky Way enterprise architecture model. I did my thesis on internal org. communication and now work in IT, and a pure communication is limited in relation to capability maps (aligned through value flows).

Koschman in "organizational Communication" suggests that "communication 'as' organization" is much different than communication "within" an organization. true or false?

Can we just appreciate the drawing skills of the author? *-* On the other hand, I firstly played the video for its content (to get some info about organizational communication) which I did not. Haha. Never mind
