The teacher in the network security class I just took is a pentester with the OSCP. The way he talks about it it's like the gold standard for pentesting, and if you have it a company knows you're ready to hit the ground running from day one in that job. One day I plan to take it, and if I ever pass it I'm going to feel pretty smug about it for awhile afterwards.
@Itcareerquestions

Yeah the people whom I consulted with about this cert all said very similar things as your teacher. It's definitely a great certification.

That is not true. The OSCP is not the end all be all. GIAC GPEN, GWAPT GXPN and LPT are equal and better than OSCP

@@Kevin-ot9oz I agree that the OSCP is not the end all be all. But the certs you mention I would definitely not rate above the OSCP, but to each their own. I would likely rate the CRTE above OSCP when it comes to Windows environments and for general pentesting I would rate the Rastalabs and Offshore labs on HTB to require other skillsets than what the OSCP gives, although they don't unlock a certification.

First off I want to start by saying I just found you and your videos are wonderful. I know this is off subject but do you have any study guide recommendations for N10-007? I'm currently watching all the Mike Meyers videos on LinkedIn learning and am going to watch the Professor Messer videos. Also I'm thinking about getting the exam cram book and professor messer's notes. Anything else you'd recommend. Once again thank you for the great videos you put out and all the hard work you put into them. I really really appreciate it.
@Itcareerquestions

Thank you! Best advice would be to try to simulate everything you're learning. Pick up a used switch or two, use GNS3, any way that you can actually put into practice what you're learning will greatly help. Good luck!!!
@mr.demiurge5700
@mr.demiurge5700 5 лет назад
I really liked testout.com in studying for my CompTIA certs, including N10-007, particularly for the gigantic practice exams they have at the end of each course. That can be pricey, though; a regular month costs $80, though they seem to have regular sales where it can drop to as low as $5. They offer a week long free trial, so you can decide for yourself. Also, bump up the video speeds in their courses to 1.5 or you'll go insane.
@Itcareerquestions
@Itcareerquestions 5 лет назад
Haha great comment at the end. So very true. Test out is definitely becoming one of my favorite learning platforms with their simulations and their quick exams after each course. Very good material over there.

could someone get a pen tester job only by having the certifications or must have and university degree?
@jocamp5
@jocamp5 5 лет назад
Yes and not. Experience is key. But having certs without experience, will open more doors. Same for college degrees. You’ll get more IT security foundations but it’s not a mandatory requirement. Many PenTesters have no college degree at all
@joaq1999

I haven't done this... but I will. A word, CEH v10 costs about 900 only the exam, the course is much more expensive and honestly, it is multiple choice exam. I believe (I say I believe because I haven't done any cert yet) OSCP is by far better. Funny, I will take ECH first because it is easier and more commonly known on the market, but my guts tell me that trainning with Offesinve Security is the real thing, when I see the syllabus and the exam time it is both, intimidating and attractive. If my plan goes well I will go for Offensive Security full trainning plan, because it looks real, by real I mean, as you said, real skills for real life

Hey man I’m going to be starting a 2 year cyber defense program and get my associates while hopefully working part time help desk( gonna go for my A+ before school starts ) but I was wondering what is a good path for someone looking into defensive security ? I see a lot of offensive but I don’t know what would be the most useful certs or anything. My plan is to get my A+ get some years of experience while then studying for the security + and then CISSP. Just looking for some help bro
@BearBaylor69
@BearBaylor69 5 лет назад
These are usually set up as Blue Team (Defense) and Red Team (Offense). They go hand in hand, both can usually step into the role of the other with no problems. Red Team passes along info to Blue Team or Blue Team actively tries to stop Red Team, etc. Offensive security is more popular because the average business usually leaves the defense or patches up to the Server and Network Admins, using intel from the Red Teamer (usually contracted). Big businesses can afford to hire both. Any certs in Server, Azure, Cloud, or Network Security will cover most of the defensive perspective. Don't worry about certs so much right now, OSCP and CISSP will help in either role you choose. As the old saying goes: "The best defense is a damn good offense."

Some honest words about the OSCP: OSCP will just cover basic to mid Pentest skills. If you have no idea about Pentesting or InfoSec dont do OSCP. Even tho it might tell you the more or less baics you will get stuck in the Lab on almost every Maschine since they will not even close cover every possivle attack vector that you might encounter. Do OSCP when you have maybe around 1 year EXP in InfoSec and have some good knowledge already about Linux,Web,Windows and basic's about Buffer Overflows and Privilage escalation. But chances are then that you are kinda bored about the Lab because yeee...its really old. Much maschines are Win XP and old Linux. On the other hand I had to face most recent Windows and Linux releases....good Job Offensiv Security....this makes no sense at all but whatever. Before ppl start flaming. Yes I passed the Exam 3 weeks ago on the first try with root on all maschines in less thanthe 24 hours. If someone wants some Infos about OSCP in generall PM me.
