Periodontitis, also referred to as gum disease or periodontal disease, begins with bacterial growth in your mouth and may end -- if not properly treated -- with tooth loss due to destruction of the surrounding tissue and bone. Gum disease is mostly caused by improper oral hygiene which allows bacteria in plaque and calculus to remain on the teeth and infect the gums. But there are other factors that increase the risk of developing gum disease. Some examples are the following:
Use of tobacco products which prevent the gum tissue from being able to heal.
Crooked, rotated, or overlapped teeth which make teeth and gums harder to clean.
Hormonal changes may cause the blood vessels in the gums to be more sensitive to bacteria.
Stress can weaken the body's immune response to bacterial invasion.
Diets high in sugars/carbohydrates and low in water can increase plaque formation.
Health conditions, such as Diabetes, may impair circulation and affect gum healing.
