Very well explained. This is how we need to approach every topic where “WHY” should be answered before “HOW”.

yeah mate. its actually a bit of a bastard to teach. i did a whole course on digital communications it at university and phase-sync was completely omitted. not even mentioned in the material. taught QaM, but no phase locking. figure that one out. i honestly ran into the trouble of trying to make a demodulator and realized i was missing something. and found PLL on my own.

Thank you for answering an important question that is overlooked many other videos: why can't we just use the VCO or the reference oscillator itself without the feedback loop.

If two frequencies are different, then the phase difference will not be same and input voltage to VCO will not remain constant. How will this control the output frequency?
@zainabashai7546
@zainabashai7546 Год назад
What is the threshold frequency below which all frequencies are considered low in RF design and above which all frequencies are considered high in RF design?

So essentially it is a reference point and it forces it back into lock if it drifts off frequency?
@chiraag3972
@chiraag3972 4 года назад
Great explanation, thank you. One question - how are we increasing the frequency of the VCO if we are constantly trying to match the phase difference of VCO and the reference oscillator?
@Mangakan_desu
@Mangakan_desu 4 года назад
through the divider.
@VikramBamel
@VikramBamel 2 года назад
VCO is typically programmable and uses frequency multipliers to achieve higher frequency. At a given voltage, say V1, the multiplier would be set at a programmed value, say 10X.
@VikramBamel
@VikramBamel 2 года назад
Also, once we set the VCO to a desired frequency(by fixing the multiplier), there’s no need to keep increasing the frequency any further. We just need to maintain that high frequency as good as we can.
@zainabashai7546
@zainabashai7546 Год назад
Why do we have an Amplifier before the Loop Filter? Is it because without the amplifier, the average DC voltage produced by the Loop Filter will be lower than needed? Will VCO will receive lower DC control voltage than needed due to the nature of averaging?

Interesting. So a phase detector doesn’t only detect that two signals are in phase, but also that they have the same frequency. • Equal frequency and equal phase angle: constant zero phase difference. • Equal frequency but different angle: non-zero but constant phase difference. • Different frequency: time-varying phase difference.
@bonbonpony

Yeah, but how to build a frequency divider that could work with gigahertz frequencies? :q Usual CMOS counters don't quite work with such high frequencies :/
@zainabashai7546
@zainabashai7546 Год назад
Why don't we just use the reference oscillator to provide stable input signal? How is the reference oscillator not prone to temperature and noise effects?
@zainabashai7546

I realize that you answered my question in the video. Great!

what if Phase difference =0 --> DC voltage at VCO=0; then How o/p frequency is obtained? please answer to this question
@dimitrijbender7285
@dimitrijbender7285 4 года назад
As much as I understood, Phase difference doesn't matter, as long as the difference is stable.
