Thanks for this nice presentation. Do you have any advanced explanation for PMD? My understanding is that the orthogonality may also lost due to birefringence. Any explanation?

It is specifically designed to mitigate polarization mode dispersion, a phenomenon caused by variations in the propagation speeds of orthogonal polarization states in optical fibers. The fiber is not perfectly round; it has an ovality that causes PMD. Look at what Corning does to correct it: it creates ovals in the fiber that are perpendicular to each other longitudinally.
