I'm pretty sure you just saved me from failing my literary honors course! Thank you! You explain psychological criticism in a quick and simple way for me to understand, and your enthusiasm helps me stay engaged with the content! You're amazing!
Thank you so much for this. I need to do a power point applying a type of criticism to a play and chose psychological criticism, this makes the way it's used clear and gives me a good starting place!
My essay is due in a few hours and... I still have to write it. I focused very much on the psychology of the story, but don’t feel confident enough to apply it but thank you for lightening my mood a little :)
Wow, your videos on Literary Criticism are really helpful! I am taking Ap Lang & Comp this year and I have an exam tomorrow on a bunch of the different criticisms and how they are used. The reading we were assigned didn't really provide much clarity, but your videos did. Thank you very much!
Keep up the good work!
Thank u so much ❤ u literally save me . U have a great potential in teaching and I do like your style , which helps me a lot in my study. Criticism is interesting and u make it way more fun 🥰 thanks again.
Crystal clear! Just as it needs to be!! Whoever can't explain something simply hasn't understood it completely either. That's a general comment for all these professors who make our lives harder...
These are good basic psychology questions that I think my Chinese students will understand. Great work, Mr Nance. Thank you for uploading your video :)
Thanks for the very informative lecture. I have a couple of questions about this approach. Why? in helping a reader understand these texts? Why? to help in your explication of texts? Why? I really benefited from your lecture and I hope you have good answers to those questions. I really appreciate your time.
Hello, I am a graduate student from Taiwan. This video is really helpful. Thank you! But I'm studying on Michel Foucault recently, and I can not find any videos relates to him on your channel. I'm really looking forward to the subsequent videos. (:
Thank you. I don’t currently have any videos on him specifically, but I’ve had a few requests, so I’ll keep it in mind. I want to get back to making literary criticism videos, but I’ve had trouble finding time.
Hello, Mr Nance, I want to conduct my undergraduate research paper about analyzing the maturity development of Huckleberry Finn using Robert Kegan's stages of Social Maturity. Is it possible for me to do that?
I am going to use psychoanatic criticism for my thesis project and your video is really helpful. I can easily make a general questions of the object I use. Could you suggest me which books I should read that has relation with Kohlberg? Thanks!
You might read Kohlberg's book of essays: Kohlberg, Lawrence (1981). Essays on Moral Development, Vol. I: The Philosophy of Moral Development. San Francisco, CA: Harper & Row. Also, you should look at his use of the Heinz Dilemma. Good luck on your thesis project!
Hi! Thank you so much for your awesome videos. I am taking a class right now on Theories and Teachings of Literature and we are reading about all of these different theories including Psychoanalysis. I am a bit confused though since you did comment on someone that psychoanalysis is different to psychological criticism...Because what I read in my book is similar to what you're saying in the video...But my main question is that I currently have to write a research paper on any literary/critical theory on any literary text and I have chosen to write about "Frankenstein" using psychoanalysis. Would you have any tips as to how I could approach this? I don't even know my thesis yet either, so therefore am quite lost, to be honest. Any help would be appreciated! Thank you!
I suppose psychoanalysis as you're seeing it means simply applying psychoanalysis to a character in a book, which I would consider a subcategory of psychological criticism, but could I guess be used somewhat interchangeably. Are you intending to psychoanalyze Frankenstein or the monster? Both are interesting because each has complex and even conflicting motives for their actions. You could focus on Victor's obsessive work habits, or the desire for love and the complexity of relationships. How about Oedipal complexes stemming from being rejected by a father? Or, of course, you could blend a little historical criticism in and psychoanalyze Mary Shelley. How much of the monster story is a reaction to her deteriorating relationship with her husband? There are many options. A good place to start would be to list all the possible psychological issues you see and then pick one that interests you and has interesting implications. Good luck!
Thank you so much for your reply! I have decided to analyze Victor but took the route of how the monster is his "dark double" and then will compare and contrast them both. I will be talking about Victor's obsessiveness and definitely the Oedipus complex about his childhood! Currently in the making since the draft is due next Monday.
Yes. I would say psychological criticism is generally using psychology to study literature, whereas psychoanalytical crit is specifically using psychoanalysis to study the subconscious of the characters. It's more specific and related to the balance of the Id, Ego and Superego, as discussed by Freud. This video only introduces the use of psychology generally.
Ah! True! And I just suggested him for archetypal study to a student. Oh, well! Yes, Melville is very interesting, psychologically. I'd say Moby Dick is much more psychologically driven than plot driven.
Melville was a sailor first Moby Dick and Billie Budd just reek of that POV. I am enjoying your classroom I never had any formal English Lit after HS. I studied Engineering at Cornell and almost all My arts electives were in the Classics. I guess that's formal literatary study come to think of it.
+Genevieve Cortes Psychoanalysis is a method of examining someone's mental state through questioning & associations, etc. Picture a person on a couch talking to a psychologist. This is more generally applying principles and methods of psychology to literature.
Plot twist--Lacan and friends who spill over into Deconstruction as well (and make it so that we only understand like 32% of what they say, fun times).
