What is Rhetoric? It's one of the oldest areas of study in history (about 400 BC). Rhetoric is all about the study of persuasive communication and is grounded in the teachers of philosophers like Plato, Aristotle, and Cicero and sophists like Protagoras, Gorgias, and Isocrates. We'll define and explain and show how we teach it in communication and English classes in school but it also has numerous applications to life today in public life, politics, professional settings, and the media.

I always find myself captivating people just by speaking. Once I had an exit interview leaving a job as an Executive Assistant, and I asked this CEO what I should work with next. His answer was: “Whatever you would sell, I would buy it.” Interestingly enough I’ve always been uncomfortable speaking in front of people. It contradicts my life in general as I get attention as soon as I open my mouth.

Have you ever considered doing a video on the lines of "How to Be a an Ethical Communicator and Listener"? Intellectual honesty should be chief among them. Perhaps you touched on these topics before(as you did briefly here) and just need to consolidate them. Being persuasive is a skill not a virtue. The difference should be pointed out from time to time.

Rhetoric was my 1st class on my 1st day of College. Recently, it appears missing in Mainstream News and Media, in even Concept. *Teach this in English in High School.*
@cCstLadyMeows
@cCstLadyMeows Год назад
IT IS MISSING in media - esp MSM on TV - b/c it is not their interest or job (unfortunately) to educate us and to be honest. They are there to lie, sell ads, propagate, and regurgitate the same old worn out talking points. This is by design intentionally b/c of how the globalists run the networks and run the show in all areas of our establishment. Most ppl are still naive about that although we are still waking up right now - esp post covid. They are paid instead to dumb us down and entertain us w/ tons of distractions. "Bread & circuses" as they say. My friend is teaching this in her new English class as she is becoming a home-schooler w/ an emphasis on language. She runs her own magazine and is a wonderful writer/ editor and journalist. She will be teaching ppl about how to properly research - where to look for sources, how to be more resourceful, how to use hunches and theories and how to prove them to be true. She will also be teaching ppl about dialectics/ how to become a balanced thinker/ 'centrist', how to be curious and use Aristotle line of questioning in journalism/ interviews, etc. She knows a lot about the false dichotomy, duality in language and in logic, etc....She is a high-level rhetorician.

I teach composition. I like the video but I disagree with your definition - I think visual texts and audio texts etc can use rhetoric as well. I tend to use a much more expansive definition.

Rhetoric in communication, You learn and teach to fool others. That's persuasive context (frame). But, can you learn and teach not to be fooled by others? Defense is more important to survive than attack to destroy the defence of enemy, though it seems that attack is the best defence. What's the point of attack, if you cannot defend to exist? One need not destroy one's enemy. One need only destroy his willingness to engage. Sun Tzu, the art of war That's about strong defence. You need an army to destroy your enemy. But, you can be destroyed by a pin. Why don't you teach Rhetoric to not to be persuaded and think open? There's a big market of demand to learn how to defend, than how to attack. Take advantage.

As a field of study, the area of Rhetoric is the origin and foundation of communication (as an academic area). Most sub-areas that came after it were strongly influenced by rhetorical concepts, theories, etc.

There are lots of books to learn about rhetoric but fewer books that teach you how to apply the techniques in a speech. I'd recommend Aristotle's book titled, Rhetoric. Sometimes, the titled it "On Rhetoric" but it's available on Amazon. It has a mixture of theory and practical advice. It's a classic!

@alexanderlyon
@alexanderlyon 9 месяцев назад
Unfortunately, that's how people use the word in everyday conversation. But it is a legitimate field of study that today spans both English and Communication. As mentioned, some of the most well-known Greek philosophers and sophists discussed it and wrote about it.
@ravenillusion2596

@@alexanderlyon the play on words and Double speak to hide intent. What's the definition of sophists ?
@alexanderlyon
@alexanderlyon 9 месяцев назад
It sounds to me like you are thinking of the word the way it's talked about in the news rather than how Rhetoric is actually studied and taught. For example, have you studied the Sophists for yourself? I have. I recommend you read Cicero's book, _On the Ideal Orator_ ? Have you read Aristotle's _The Rhetoric_ ? I have. I recommend it. You won't find any advice about how to use double-speak. In fact, ethics is always a main theme in the field. Quintilian, a neo-sophist, said that the ideal orator was "the good man speaking well," with an emphasis on the speaker's character. More recently (1970s), Tom Nilseon emphasized the ethical responsibilities of speakers with the concept of significant choice that says "choice making that is voluntary, free from physical or mental coercion . . . based on all the information available when the decision must be made." As mentioned, Rhetoric is a serious area of study. People in the news use the word differently. Without the field of Rhetoric (going back thousands of years), we wouldn't have modern-day democracies or concepts like the freedom of speech. Great speeches and debates throughout history have shaped the world. In fact, the study of Rhetoric equips us to be more critical consumers of manipulative messages by identifying things like logical fallacies and other misuses of evidence. There are lots of slimy communicators out there. We likely agree on that. The field of rhetoric is wholeheartedly against double-speak and manipulation. The field of Rhetoric is no more responsible for those people's bad decisions than is the study of Composition (the written word) for the manipulative decisions we see in print marketing and advertisement. Some kids use magnifying glasses to study nature up close and other kids, sadly, use them to burn ants. It's not the magnifying glass that's the problem. It's about the character of the person that motivates their decisions.
@ravenillusion2596

@@alexanderlyon semantic jargon (yes i did read all of your response please reciprocate). Oxford states basically that sophist/sophistry premise is deceitful, or"influenced", or often morally skeptical in intent. Also states rhetoric as deceitful or play on words. Double speak is also play on words hidden meaning to hide truth often used by lawyers, contracts, media to manipulate. Any manor of speaking that has any hidden agenda regardless has a manipulative, negative ethical narratives. It's the why that's important no one asks why anymore. Been looking at the problem with recent war on clear truthful factual communication and the war on the 1st amendment. Hence how i came across your vid.
