What is the real color of saffron and how do you describe it to people who don't know? As you probably know, saffron is the "color of the kings of Ireland" and has always been a traditional color of Irish culture and Irish nationalism. Saffron kilts have been worn by the Irish military since the early 20th century and it is perhaps the most widely worn kilt in Ireland today.

Saffron ranges in color from bright yellow to golden to rust to a deep, earthy red. One of the oldest, most notable uses of saffron in dying clothing is among Buddhist monks. Monks of different Dharma paths wear "the saffron robe" in different colors. Thai Theravada monks wear a bright golden yellow robe. Sri Lankan Theravada monks wear an earthy red saffron robe. Chinese Mahayana monks wear a muted gold robe and Tibetan Vajrayana monks (like the Dalai Lama) wear a rich red robe with a golden over robe. They are all saffron but are very different in hues depending on the saffron used and the dying process used. The same goes for saffron fabric in kilts.

Saffron was (and remains) the most expensive spice on earth. There's a reason it was considered the color of kings- they were the only people that could afford it! It was so valuable in medieval trade that the penalty for cutting it with fillers was death!

the actual flower portion in say rice or potato is a much brighter orange then what is scene in fabric , when I have got it on white cotton it was an equally bright orange so I dont think that the fabric is dyed using the plant saffron or even attempting to match the color of the plant

I agree with you. The spice and coloring agent of saffron is the pistil of a particular crocus which was hybridized early in history but only grew well in the area around the Mediterranean where we today find Greece, Turkey, and Iran. While trade could certainly have gotten saffron to Ireland, they would not have had access to a great quantity of it and it would have been terribly expensive. Historians tell us that the fall of the Roman Empire disrupted trade so badly that there is no evidence that saffron was used for anything in Europe for the following 200 years or so. I suspect that the Irish used other plant based dyes, and that the color name 'saffron' came about at a much later time. Much like the color name 'flesh', which really is not the color of anyone's flesh, the color named 'saffron' is not like the color of actual saffron.

Saffron was expensive, and like other natural dyes, it would fade, get grubby, and all that.

There's no historical evidence to suggest that Irish used actual saffron to dye their leine, we mostly get this description from English accounts when they described it as the colour saffron. And these descriptions come from when the Tudors were implementing laws to BAN traditional Irish dress. But, because the saffron spice is so expensive and even moreso back then, and had to be imported it was very expensive. And because at this point in time wealth in Ireland was far different from that of the rest of Europe. In the rest of Europe it was measured in gold, wealth, jewels, land etc but in Ireland we still had a wealth system based on cattle and farming land. Moreover, the Irish chieftains power was more limited than European kings as was their wealth. So they would not have been able to afford and dye the large amounts of fabric required to make their leine or brat. It's likely things such as woods, or flowers, even onion peels and carrots can be used to give a mustardy-orange colour!
