99% of the city is fine. Be careful walking alone at night in the TL and outskirts of. Buddy system helps and just taking a car service or pub transit to pass through the weird areas around civic center and TL will make for a pleasurable visit. It’s a shame there are sooo many excellent hotels, bars, restaurants in the dodgy parts. Zombieland (open air drug market ) at 6th near market st Friday and Saturday night is no joke. Looks like a nightmare. Just don’t go near it. Opportunists come into the city to do their crimes. Only like 8% of arrests are actually SF residents. Those areas are still fugly af to this day. Just stick the other 99% of the town and you will be just fine. You wouldn’t even know SF has some issues.
I am about to visit SF in the near future and it is really good to see that things seem to improve. I am from Europe and all you currently see see is "uuhhh SF is baaaaad". I will avoid Tenderloin and SoMa but Ih hope the rest is fine 😉
I have just visited from Europe and I'll be honest: There is a problem with homelessness, drug abuse and mental illness that is in your face, sooner or later, as you walk the streets and ride the public transportation of this city. Since I traveled solo I was aware of my surroundings at all times and never stayed out late since my hotel was on a street where homeless people hung around - no, it was not in Tenderloin. These problems are not isolated to just one area as some people will have you believe. I love Fisherman's Wharf, and it felt like a safe haven from the Union Square area. I also enjoyed Hayes St, Height Ashbury, walking by the beach to the Golden Gate Bridge and more. I won't discourage anyone to visit San Francisco, but be aware that if you stray from the touristy spots even ever so slightly, you will see people living in misery, human feces on the streets and things of that nature. To some it might not be a big deal, to me it was a bit of a downer. Not all those less fortunate people are bad though, I feel empathy for most of them. Overall I had a good time and I'm happy that I visited. Sorry about the novel😄
I am from Montreal Canada and visited every big us cities and also many european cities. The most dangerous city in Canada feels safer than the least dangerous city in the states. All american cities have this problem where you have to stay on edge. In Barcelona and Paris I also felt the need to stay on edge but not in Geneva, Munich and Madrid. Canada on the other hand is extremely safe. In the US the rich focus on isolation themselves from the homeless and the poor people instead of fixing the issue.
Used to travel there for business in the early 2000's. Loved SF! So glad to see that it's still a nice place, at least where you visited. Better tell the sea lions that they can come back too..
the news & social media always make it seem like it’s anarchy or something, same thing here in Denver where they paint it as hell on earth but it is actually lovely
Great video! I currently live in LA, but consider moving to SF because it has the perfect combination of urban atmosphere/walkability and natural beauty. I think if you're outside of the fog zone, you'll even get more sunshine than in coastal Southern California (at least according to statistics). Looking forward to the next part!
SF is absolutely beautiful and disgusting all at the same time. I spent some time there in March, would live there in a heart beat! But can’t let go of Santa Monica either! Yes, I have issues! lol! 😝
lol this is how i felt too! lots of nice places to see but the homeless problem is real and walking out my hotel seeing needles and poop on the sidewalk was the nasty part
@@SeaofThieves_7 is this hotel in the tenderloin because i haven't seen any needles or poop outside of any major hotels in SF. exactly what hotel is this
@@christhompson-s6l my email from when i visited it’s the courtyard by Marriot off of post st. my friends i visited that were there for vacay have fam there and were teasing me that my hotel was near tenderloin and i didn’t know what tenderloin was at that time lmao. when my friends got dropped off to the hotel, one of them almost stepped on a needle by the entrance. also, every morning when i went to stroll around there was poop by the entrance and around the whole block of the vicinity the hotel was in 😂
Santa Monica is ghetto nowadays. It's what happens when soft on crime DAs are elected. Ironically, the same DA that runs LA County nowadays is also the same one that ruined SF a few years ago.
I went to SF a couple months ago to visit my friend who lives there and it was way cleaner than I expected. Portland Oregon is far worse right now. I had a really good time in SF, I would definitely go back.
We went to Portland first last month, it was sad, like a ghost town but SF was horrible. Open drug use, needles, poop everywhere. Did you go anywhere there? We did tours like we do in every city we visit.
Thank you for visiting San Francisco. You inspired me to visit it after about 25 years since my last visit. I'll be there in 2 weeks. I live in Santa Clarita near Vasquez Rocks.
The real issue with San Fran is that NIMBYs have blocked any reasonable type housing reform which when coupled with the tech boom has pushed the cost of living there to absurd amounts. Shame about the MACY's West iconic flagship closing but as you made reference to, we can't be too bummed about a business closing, maybe they can turn the building into some kinda mix use development
@@MichaelMartello Duboce rhymes with Gross (not that it is anything but nice, mind you) and Noe rhymes with Zoe. And the park may be "Mission Dolores Park", but no one ever says the Mission part out loud.; it's just Dolores Park.
I visited San Francisco in 2022 for my birthday and I really enjoyed the city the cable cars Fisherman's wharf Union Square. I was disappointed I didn't get to walk across the SF Bridge I was able to take a boat ride around Alcatraz and under SF Bridge. Over all I enjoy SF and wouldn't mind going back
I think most things go in cycles. Currently San Fran is going through a tough time in terms of deficits, politics and crime. However, San Fran is not going anywhere. I think they will manage to make this town thrive again, solve all the issues it currently has, and housing prices will come down. I don't think the city needs a lot done to it. If they can figure out how to get affordable housing/ apartments built, clean the streets and solve the homeless and drug issues, then SF will shine! Things are looking great for San Fran in the next decade or two i'd say. I've been there once and will definitely be going again. Wonderful vibes all round!
once I went to sf and then to watch the sunset at Marshalls Beach. as soon as I got there it was so foggy. I couldn't see two feet in front of me. my windshield was soaked. you'd think it was raining. I desire to go every weekend. Great city with great food, great culture, so much live local music. Some of the most beautiful parks ive been to. I think those who watch the news about SF are innately negative. Not to mention the public transit is good and you can get pretty much anywhere with it. I ditch my car every time
❤Nice video!! I grew up here and SF was a pretty violent gangster-run city in the 90s & before with 100s gun violence & murders a year just in the Geneva neighborhood. Back then You would get robbed if you moved towards the back of the buses 😂 You can even see the grittiness of downtown in the 2000s in movies like Sweet November.
LA. There's not a whole lot to see in San Diego (not even the zoo nowadays) and SF is a tiny city that only takes a couple of days to see. LA might be the homeless capitol of the world but there are many wonderful things to see here that will take at least a week.
hmm i was born in san diego and lived there for a while before moving to the bay and i’ve lived in the bay for many years now. i also have visited LA many many times. so i know all three cities pretty well and i would say go visit san diego for sure cause it is so beautiful over there and there are so many nice hotels and beaches as well as good food. san deigo also has the zoo which is pretty nice and the weather is really nice. san francisco is also really pretty and nice for a day trip. i would say if you are going to visit san francisco go drive around and see the other cities in the bay area. northern cali is so gorgeous and has a lot to offer just like socal.
@@diggingmystyle Ummmmmmm... Not much to see in SF? You're kidding, right? Yeah, you can do the most touristy spots in SF in maybe 3-4 days. But to actually experience SF you'll need a full month. Most tourist need several visits just to see all the popular spots in the city, let alone the entire Bay Area. Plus, SF is like a city-city. LA... LA is fun but different.
It is a beautiful place if you block out the boarded-up buildings, don't look at the sidewalk, and tell yourself that it is safe because you have not been robbed "yet".
Summer in San Francisco is actually foggy and cold LOL - if you want to enjoy actual Summer weather, come in Sept and Oct for the best weather. As a Bay Area local, I too have been caught several times and have some tourist sweatshirts to show for it.
SF has to find a way to get the middle class back in town. Lack of political leadership and police presence are damaging what makes SF a great place to live. They need to show taxpayers they actually care about safety, which should always be priority #1 for every city.
Yes! I remember visiting back in the early 2000's. Reasonable rent, lots of great street food and the clubbing scene was fantastic! It just way to expensive to enjoy yourself.
@@TohaBgood2 I'm am in the IT field, make a decent amount of coin, $900 - $1200 a mo is more than reasonable to live in SF. Great concerts, food, and a great vibe, all gone now.
@@ebadd3468 Lol, dude. What is up with this blatant misinformation? First of all, if you were actually "in the IT field" in SF then you would know that we call it "tech" around here. The "IT field" here is literally tech support. As in, you're helping people set up their printer. Second of all, for $1200 a month you don't even rent a studio in SF! Look at the rents on craigslist. You can barely afford a room in a double for that money and no food or anything else! (BTW, what we call a "double" means two people living in the same bedroom.) And no one working in tech in SF makes $1200/month. That's literally 1/3 of minimum wage in San Francisco. It's literally illegal to pay people that little. People working an McDonalds make 3-4x more! Anyone working in tech makes north of $100k/year, but usually more than $150k total comp. So if you work in tech in SF you're making at least $8-9k per month, but usually $12-16k or more.
I don't think your comparisons are the best. Prepandemic Union Square had Neiman Marcus and Saks Fifth Avenue; so Rodeo Drive ND Wishire in LA is more similar than Pershing Square or another LA park. Santa Minica or Venice Beach are probably better comparisons to Fishermen's Wharf. Glad to hear SUSAN problems aren't citywide. I plan to travel later this year.
I'm not sure what else Macy's has left to cut other than their flagship store in NYC (Ours is now a high school). But I think the organizers of the Thanksgiving parade might want to look into recruiting a new title sponsor sooner rather than later.
I just come back an " Fake victim video" on SF, im glad to seen not everybody crying like baby but some peoples really appreciate good thing because if you dont like SF , hmm i dont know in what city you can live !!!! And yeah love to SF, appreciate what you got for us you aint in this grimmey France
You remind me of the violin player in titanic! People are now pooping right in front of the public. Fisherman’s warf is completely dead, and no one wants to visit the city anymore. Wake-up and smell the coffee!
My first two visits was in 2018 and 2019, 2018 was super short. 2019 I enjoyed it but didn't get to explore enough, but went as far as San Jose up to Apple Park. I am thinking of making it my destination this summer because I am have not been impressed by any of the videos of Santa Monica and West Hollywood so far. When I visited in 2019 I couldn't find the Painted Ladies, I was thinking it would be close to Dolores Park but I was way off. The feelings are getting stronger for SF, will make a final decision soon.
Then why is crime that you can't report also down? Why are murders down too? Why did the prices for replacement automotive glass go down below pre-pandemic? Why are the streets clean? Why are the homeless people gone from the streets? You all keep trying to pretend like the crazy NIMBYs in SF who report literally everything and anything stopped reporting crime. Anyone who has met the typical whiny San Franciscan knows that this is complete bullshyt. If anything, they complain too much and report a ton of non-crime.
Hayes Valley is the hub for the smaller AI startups and Mission Bay is where the people from the larger ones hang out (OpenAI, Anthropic, Inflection AI, etc.)
Wow. Going to be there this coming Friday to start my PCH1 trip down to San Diego. I was aware of some areas gone. Not necessarily Fisherman’s Wharf even though it’s a tourist trap. Getting there Friday night. Leaving Monday morning. Can anyone suggest “Must Do’s” while I’m there with my wife & kids ? We are doing Alcatraz, Muir Woods, Chinatown, Marin Headlands etc. I know to stay away from The Tenderloin Area but with so much now closed, where is a good place to spend some time ? My daughter wants an Authentic NFL 49ers Bosa jersey and the one place that came recommended is closed I think. Any help is much appreciated. Thanks.
SF has its not so great side, like the rest of the country, but overall, it still has its positives. People believe everything they see on social media. Disaster and scare tactics sell. If it was anarchy and everyone was leaving the Bay Area, the house prices would come down. That's definitely not happening. Yours is the most realistic showing I've seen in a while.
Despite the pandemic era media hoopla about SF being "unsafe", even at the worst point in 2020-2021 SF was still substantially safer than for example any major city in Florida. So yes, SF did see a brief increase in non-violent crime (and virtually no increase in violent crime) during the pandemic. But it has A. since reversed, and B. never actually got as bad as most other cities around the country that people consider "safe". SF is overall a very safe place that has a ton of very whiny people that start screeching bloody murder as soon as there's even a tiny increase in crime or homelessness.
@@ebadd3468 No. Stealing below $1000 is not longer classified as a felony. But it's still a misdemeanor. You're still getting arrested and you're still going to jail, but slightly less time. Oh, and property crimes dropped more than in half in SF in the last year. How do you explain the drop if you're saying that the penalties got lower? You've completely overdosed on propaganda, bud.
@@TohaBgood2 What does your average police officer think about a misdemeanor offense? We don't have time to prosecute so they let it slide. Not worth all that paperwork. And since your city had one of the largest defund the police marches, what type of police recruit will you have to pick from. Most likely bottom of the barrel recruit. Cope harder pal, whatever makes you sleep at night. Better start packing, because it will get worse before it gets better.
@@ebadd3468 No defunding happened in SF whatsoever. In fact, the SFPD budget increased since the pandemic. There are all kinds of crazies marching for all kinds of stuff. Doesn't mean that anyone acts on their crazy beliefs. In your city you have neonazis marching to declare Trump king and emperor. Have they declared the orange mor0n emperor yet? No? Because marches don't mean automatic implementation in public policy, right? This is complete nonsense. The cops still arrest people in SF for shoplifting just like they always did. The same as they do in the states that have an even higher misdemeanor/felony limit than California, like for example Texas. You people have no idea what you're talking about. All you know is the crappy propaganda you heard on Fox "News".
So you pretend the bad things aren't there? Pretty much Homeless and drug addicts all over, closed down stores and high crime. I won't be watching misleading videos again.
Now show the reality, buddy. You literally avoided the bad areas. Market street has only two blocks where its not taken by zombies. You must be a journalist...
@@Kimster182 Car breakins in SF dropped below the national average after a crackdown by the city. You're now more likely to have your car broken into in whatever city you live in than in SF.
@@Kimster182 I go to San Francisco multiple times a year, and never once has my car been broken into. The media machine is nothing but propaganda and scare tactics, and they, for whatever reason, have a deranged vendetta against San Francisco (and pretty much all of California for that matter)
I hate when people think that SF is so terrible from 1 small visit, although it may be a little weird that doesn’t make everything horrible and if someone would not say these things about such a big beautiful place 😕it just makes me sad to think about what people think
With a massive 34 trillion debt everything in the u s is collapsing. Holding on to the dollar and bond is a death trap. The business of war made it worse
Lol, California is just about to pass Japan for 5th largest economy in the world, buddy. Wake up! Your propaganda has been saying this same crap for decades. When is America supposed to crash finally? Any decade now?
I left San Francisco last year after living there 10 years--people are angry, streets, dirty, retail closing, crime rampant (I was subjected to a burglary which police never showed up too), homelessness increasing, people hallucinating on drugs in streets, expensive, restaurants and retail closing, stores boarded up, and I am just getting started....so glad to be among lucky people who was able to leave...
There is a distinct difference in vibe between L.A. and San Fran and I think you're either built for one or the other. Me, personally, am energized by L.A., whereas I feel like the life is being sucked out of me in San Fran. It could be the fog and the constant dampness of the air in San Fran, bc I have S.A.D., but it's not a place I've ever enjoyed.
@@MichaelMartello It really is. May Gray and June Gloom this year in L.A. were exceptionally rough. There were weeks on end of no sun until 2 or 3 pm. If it isn't cloudy again until December, I may actually recover.
Cultural, economic & physical differences between the two major parts of CA have been noted for generations. Same thing with the differences between NYC & LA, the East Coast & West Coast. Or Europe & the US. They'll never change. Today's SF, however, is a forewarning to any city, particularly LA, how things can fall apart way too easily in spite of a city having built-in advantages of weather, culture, terrain, economics, demographics.
@@gridley Lol, dude what are you even talking about? Have you seen SF these days? Seriously! Have you actually visited it recently? It's kind of great.
@@TohaBgood2 I guess the owners of properties like the Westfield SF Centre, or around Union Sq or Fisherman's Wharf must be gaslighting everyone. It's also possible that, for example, Macy's just wants a sweetheart deal from the city, etc.
