Wow, that is awesome. His Seisan Dachi is how my shotokan sensei taught me to do Hangetsu (Seisan). Would it be possible to see more footage of the stance? From the list of katas the ones you mentioned we don't have the first one. In my Isshin Shorinji Ryu practice we have a version of Tokumine No Kun.

As someone who has little knowledge of karate history but find your channel extremely intriguing, is there a difference between Shorin Ryu and Shorinji Ryu? Did one evolve from another or come from the same founder?

Motivation: for me, I started martial arts late in life (at 48 years old) because I always wanted to train and decided to just do it before I got any older. I continue to train because I love it, I want to get better, I want to continue to move and get healthier as I get older. Training helps me build confidence, resilience, and awareness. Two of my daughters train with me, and my granddaughter, my grandson will join when he is old enough. The dojo is like a second home and we are all family there.

Kari that's really amazing to hear. I started Shotokan last year when I turned 33. I am actually the second oldest in my class, the honor goes to a grandmother in her 60s who also started last year. It is difficult at times because I have never been the most flexible and I also have to contend with two old knee injuries and a not so well healed ankle sprain from last year. Anyway I am having quite a lot of fun and I want to go as far as I can

I have been a practitioner of Isshinryu Karate for 35 years, started when I was 10 years old, and my motivation to continue my own study but also teaching to new students is the constant unraveling of the bunkai. I am constantly surprised at how much after 35 years I still don’t know. Once my students reach intermediate belt rank (rokku kyu) I start making them come up with bunkai they see in the katas they know, and it amazes me the stuff they come up with that never even occurred to me.

The longer I practice the more I reflect that perhaps I am trying to do the impossible; I am not preparing for the future but trying to prepare my past self to face to trauma of my past. I am trying to make myself match the persona of my master, who is my hero. We are supposed to look inward to perfect ourselves, but I find myself looking up and looking back.

I train because I love it, but also because it has become part of who I am. I couldn't imagine my life without martial arts now. Even before I started officially as a kid, martial arts was always on my mind, and was a part in how I played.

I practice northern Chinese styles, three of them: too many to be honest. But I find something to appreciate about each one. I started with western boxing when I was 12, and I'm now 70. It doesn't matter how well you know taolu/kata. If you have pursued knowledge of the practical apploication of the movements, there is always another revelation just around the corner. This is what makes study of your chosen martial art a life-long pursuit, and brings about the subtle changes within you, as a person, over time.

I started karate at 6 years old. I was learning what my Sensei called Shito Ryu, but what I believe more closely resembles Shotokan. I did that style under the same master for 12 years until I got my black belt. I then moved away for college, and at the time felt very uninspired in the current state of my martial arts journey. I was just opened up to the world of MMA, and thought BJJ was the coolest thing I had ever seen. I studied BJJ at an MMA gym in the area for about 6 months. I ended up dropping out of school after covid hit, and moved back home. I, like many others at this time, began to struggle with feeling isolated, and unsure of what life had in store for me. I needed something to fill my time, and the new void I was feeling in my life without the MMA gym around. I became very introspective, started getting way more into MMA than ever before, and became very hungry for the knowledge again, and for the first time, the true history behind the martial art that had been a part of my life for so long before, Karate. I began using many online resources to aid my study, along with getting myself a copy of the Patrick McCarthy translation of the Bubishi. I spent a good amount of time discovering that Okinawan karate was so different from Japanese karate, and seeking that out. I did also help my old karate Sensei open up a new school, after the pandemic began to slowly get better, but we were practicing in a local fire dept. with little to no equipment, and teaching for free. I think I took lots of pride in the students I taught, and in knowing I was doing my best to offer them true knowledge they could apply to defend themselves, and carve out a philisophical journey along the way, but once my old master had everything under control, I ended up switching to Isshin Ryu to look deeper into Okinawan karate. My new school is great. It has nicer facilities with lots of bags, mats, kabudo weapons and a great instructor. My new motivation is to constantly be pushing myself to be better physically, mentally, and in character; along with getting my black belt from him, and one day helping to spread this art to someone else. Hopefully that it may help them someday too, on their path through life. I started all the way back at white, and am currently a yellow belt in my new style. Wish me luck!

I currently practice Shotokan Karate. I basically had an infatuation about this since my childhood, but when I started learning the art my respect for this style grew and grew. So why do I love Karate so much?? It is because with this art I get to learn about by physical abilities, I've learned a little bit about the Japanese culture, It is a realm where I can challenge myself again and again and never run out of challenges and finally for me Karate is fun

I started karate when I was 15 years old. It was very good for me and it still is. I was unable to practice in a dojo regularly but I did keep practicing on my own for the next 39 years - today. Martial Arts/Karate has been good to help me cope with mental illness, particularly depression and anxiety. The way things have been in recent years has really challenged me, but I try to keep practicing and studying to make it through each day. I hope I can afford to return to a dojo soon and resume proper practice. I am sure I need an instructor to really excel.

What is the difference between your style and this? Can you tell more about your style?
@KaiSensei16
@KaiSensei16 Месяц назад
@@Samperor A lot is different, our biomechanics are unique to our style (punch with a vertical fist and full hip rotation or kick in a thrust (kekomi) rather than snap the leg back into hiki ashi for example), because our style's founder had his own influences with Bajiquan, Judo/Tegumi, his Kudaka family traditions, some training with Chotoku Kyan + his WW2 experiences shaped our style into something really unique that totally stands apart from other styles. His emphasis was on working through kumite rather than do conditioning, so he created many prearranged yakusoku kumite to show basics. This also affected our kata, which are very mobile and don't put a lot of emphasis being anchored to the ground (our kata since founding were Naihanchin, Nijushiho, Happiken, Sanchin and Sankakutobi which they are all versions unique to our style. Other Kata like Chinto, Bassai, Wankan and Kushanku were added later on). We also have some Kudaka family Kobudo with one Sai kata, one Bo kata and a Bo vs Sai kumite.

I practice, because I like it. It's been part of my life since I was 6. With time and experience in other martial arts I've discovered that for me karate is a balanced art if you practice it accordingly. At the end it can all get mixed, but in essence you are still practicing the same art, but with mixed training methods.

This was amazing and so very interesting! I am a student in Shito-ryu karatedo, and I too practice because I respect my Sensei so so very much. Also, it is a way to connect and bond with my young sons. I started because of them, and I will continue as long as my body will allow. I'm 5th kyu now, which feels like an accomplishment but in my mind I'm still a white belt with only 2 years experience. My kids are not in my class, so I hope they catch up to me either in age or in rank! I am intrigued by what Sensei said about not wanting to change the katas for the trends. In my time practicing already some of my katas have changed small details. I'll have to ask my Sensei how he really feels about that, if it's not disrespectful! 😂🙇🏻‍♀

Yes, in a sister system Seidokan Shorin Ryu, we are also representative of Chotoku Kyan's lineage, we train Seisan first. Then Ananku, Wansu, Passai. The Kyan-ha kata syllabus is interrupted by Uchima Dojo Syllabus (Pinan Shodan - Godan, Naihanchi, and Passai Sho). Then it continues with the Kyan-Ha lineage of Gojushiho, Chinto, and Kusanku. In my knowledge in the Shorinji Ryu system, Seisain used to be trained first and then Ananku was learned. These two were switched because Ananku is easier for beginners. Some Seidokan Dojos have also made this change as well.

Nice video, and interesting. I have studied Shorinji Ryu under Sensei Richard Kim, and then Sensei Rod Sanford, but only for about 25 years. I have much to learn. What I find interesting is that our Dojo practices many more Katas than described in this video. Including Kobudo (weapon) katas, I have practiced about 30 Katas, mostly empty hand, and I am a relative beginner. My Sensei knows perhaps 100 Katas. We practice Akai jiu jitsu as well, which I believe is very important. I am not at all contending that more Katas is better, but I find it interesting that different Senseis utilize more or less Katas in their practice.

You know, having the 10th dan only attainable at Seventy years old, that's something to look forward to, at an advanced age. In my society, Seventy year olds just hang around, reminiscing about the Past, watching time pass, but Okinawa gives something to affirm your worth at an advanced age. Many people like to focus on nutrition as the secret of longevity in Okinawa, but it may be something more than that.

Whenever he kata its so great its sooo cool and i was like i wanna be like that but when i got older my relationship between him is not really good as much back then so i stop (some point i lost my respect to him as a father and a master too) and that time i though martial arts is not for me cuz seeing how he act like that i dont want to become like that, lot of discrimination hit me and pressure from both my parents having different interests it's really hard but now I'm opening myself again and starting to learn martial arts, now my motivation is just to empress (and a little pressure from the society too) myself how much my body and mind capable is. 😁

For me, the most interesting thing in Karate is the Art part - the expression of oneself in the forms of combat. I think this is not stressed enough in Europe as europeans see all martial arts as styles of combat, but not as styles of living and self-expression. Therefore, Katas gives me the most fun. However, it is a paradox as I'm practicing Kyokushin style, but I choose it due to a paradox in my country (Lithuania) where Kyokushin is the most popular style and Shotokan is closer to the margins of market. But Kyokushin has a strong emphasis on pain, struggle and how to overcome it so it is also a space for expression :)))

More from my shukokai/shito ryu lineage but in Koryu Uchinadi we have seisan, The same bo kata, Passai. However they reflect more of their Chinese origins.

His dojo may not practice Naihanchi, but other Shorinji-ryu dojo DO practice Naihanchi. I have video of one of Nakazato Joen's students performing Naihanchi in Nakazato Sensei's dojo.

It's interesting that their Seisan Dachi and our Sanchin Dachi are very similar. My motivation is always to be better than I was the year before. There is always something new to learn, even with only having 8 katas. I strive to get to the level that Harrill Sensei and my current Sensei are at. I started in '87 and I'm still learning.

Its because Seisan and Sanchin are two of the Core Katas you find in many Styles. Uechi Ryu originally consisted of three Kata with Sanchin and Seisan being two of them. Later 5 more Kata were added to make the transitition between the original three easier.

in my style we have Seisan, Chinto, and Kusanku...Seisan and Kusanku are learned to advance from brown to black belt and Chinto is learned at black.

Also, the teaching he was giving about the "Seisan" stance, is the same way we teach the "horse" stance, used widely across many of our Kata...the knees in/hips under to protect pressure points

Can you do a video on Ryuei-Ryu Karate as well? They are an Okinawan Karate style that was only opened to the public in 1970. Before that they were a family style and their signature Kata is called 'Anan'.

Joen Nakazato and Zenryo Shimabukuro were the only surviving students of Chotoku Kyan. The Kata order is almost the same as Shimabukuro's Shorin Ryu Seibukan. There are important differences in the kata from what I see.

Not entirely true. Taira Kazuo lived at least as late as the 1990s. He trained with Kyan Chotoku 1941-1943, I believe. There was another gentleman named Sunabe Shozen who moved from Okinawa to Hawaii in about 1936 or so. Charles Goodin wrote a 3-part article about him a decade ago in Classical Fighting Arts magazine.

I started Isshin Ryu in my 20s and trained for years before a spinal injury at work when I was a San Dan. Tatsuo Shimabuku founded the style after learning from Choki Motobu, Chotku Kyan, and Chojun Miyagi. He combined Shorin Ryu and Goju Ryu to get his methods but Isshin Ryu uses a vertical fist and blocks with muscle instead of bone. Can you please tell me what other styles of karate do that?
