New sub here. 61. One visit to Thailand under my belt. Kind of wrote it off as my home base but you have greatly revived my interest. Congrats on creating a new reality for yourself. It looks like you navigated into an incredibly healthy and old school situation there re: traditional values. Best of wishes fir your health to continue to improve. Thank you for airing all your thoughts and experiences...it helps many to sort out their escape from the West I'm sure...

Very important to watch out for dogs on rural roads at night. They will run out in the middle of the road and chase scooters/motorcycles. For a car I would recommend a 4 door diesel truck. Very easy to maintain and very easy on fuel. Also if you get a Ford, Toyota or Isuzu they have 80cm wading ability if you get caught in a flood

The property and entrance with gate, fencing and brick looks nice. I would not worry about the gossip in the village as they all gossip about everybody. Find a good handyman in the village. Are you going to drill for water or do you have city water in your village. I purchased some big water plastic tanks as a backup and had water delivered when needed. I purchased AC units for our bedroom and kitchen as I could not live with a fan blowing hot air. If electrical went down in the village during the day time I would go to the mall or an air conditioned coffee shop downtown. I also put up mouse traps and fly traps everywhere inside and outside the house. Having a couple of cats help keep critters coming into the house.

Great video Rob. I Like how the wall is coming along. I put a retention wall on back and side of a property (200 rai), to hold back over 1 m of dirt that was dumped a year ago. First storm was heavy and dumped tons of rain and it bowed slightly in a couple of places even though it looked sturdy, rebar etc. I thought it was done well. And it looked great. Now they have to dig out the whole length and support it with cinderblock its like building another wall to reinforce the wall.The structure was made of panels of steel reinforced concrete (approximately 5' x 15"), and pillars with grooves for those slabs to slide into 0.5 m down from soil line 3 panels 3 high, but it was just too much.. Had to have a backhoe come in and do the digging. Did an amazing amount of work in three hours. ฿200,000 so far only retaining wall still in progress. Never ending. The rainy season can put a lot of complications on progress. Doing a good job and honest work I appreciate that but things happen. I had an engineering company supervise the dirt placement,not, not, but that's another story. Oh my gosh. A lot of this is stemming from that. I hope your wall is sturdy and secure requires little further attention. Blessings to you and your family and I hope you're back gets in the best shape that It can and you feel better.

If you are going to drive/ride (car, motorcycle, or bicycle) at night, I recommend upgrading your headlight(s). What was designed to work in the cities, suburbs & streets/highways of the US is woefully inadequate in unlighted rural areas, esp. in places like Thailand, where you never know what is going to be in the road or unexpectedly jump out at you. Get/build something that increases both the throw distance and the flood angle - preferably something that also makes you visible from as far ahead as possible. When I was living abroad, I DIY-mounted a rechargeable floodlight on my bicycle, which was more powerful than most car headlights, and it saved my a** on several occasions - it is hard to believe what hazards come out after it gets pitch-black dark. Good to get an update on your personal condition, as well as your usual insight into rural Thai culture. I hope that you can soon resolve your back issue, to your complete satisfaction.

Brigitte L Jones. Great videos Rob. Concerning the eyes: Besides the obvious glasses update being likely, he could have cataracts in earlier stages, possibly developing evenly in both eyes aren't - which aren't as visible to other people, while affecting the vision problem as you described. Make sure he is having a fuller eye screening done with the optometrist looking out for any likely issues. Even here in Australia doing an extra tests or two is only $50Aud ($33 Usd) to $100 Aud if your under 65 or 70 yrs for medicare to cover such.Only annoying thing is may take an extra visit for enough time.

If its found to be cataracts by a professional the surgery is quick and life changing, can get prescription in new lens, with a very low percentage of complications.

Not relevant to this video, but one of your older videos. You were trying to describe a GIK relationship and another Thai women has a video and she described it as a "Friends With Benefits Relationship" typically with a single mother and it is tolerated by the man's wife because the wife doesn't want a divorce for society reasons. The man typically pays the GIK a regular amount or provides payments on occasion for various bills. The Thai vlogger mentioned this relationship is quite common and acceptable by Thai society especially if the wife has a financially desirable Thai husband.
@resetwithrobb
@resetwithrobb 3 месяца назад
I think this is mostly true. Obviously, as you say it ovaries a ton by the individuals involved. A Gik relationship- IMO is best thought of as lovers or as a man’s mistress. These mistresses commonly start between coworkers or neighbors, and between people in some kind daily contact. Depending on the desirability there may be a lot of money or support paid by the man or none at all. No money needs to change hands in these relationships. A Mia-Noi is maybe is more closely related to what you’re dating. That lady will get a salary nearly all the time. Varying wildly depending on the marketability and apparent wealth of the man. Generally a foreigner will pay more- not always, if he’s handsome and knows and respects the culture, etc. then he’s on “Thai prices” so to say. No disrespect to anyone intended here in my answer. Life is what it is.
@anthonyh5840
@anthonyh5840 3 месяца назад
@@resetwithrobb Yep, mia noi's are a part of Thai culture. But, sometimes the main wife may get sick of his actions and will "เลี้ยงเป็ด" - "feed the ducks". Think John Wayne Bobbit!! I always suggest that foreign husbands NEVER entertain the idea 🙂

Love your new wall, that Gate is great, now I see why you are causing a stir in the Village. I did a Thai Mortgage (pay as you go) on my Girlfriend's house in Lao. Her house is on a lot that is deep but not wide. When I went to the village for the sister's wedding I say the connecting lot was the same size with no build on it. I asked for a price but the guy was not interested in selling. The next project is to level the land on the lot. Next put in a kitchen and walk-in shower. I am going to hold out for the land on the left and right, I would like a circular driveway (LOL, never seen one in SE Asia) with a wall and fence like you have.

My wife would literally be running into things years ago. She needed glasses so we got her some but just wouldn’t wear them. When I took her to the States I got her LASIK and that took care of it. Had it myself years ago. Anyway don’t think too much Robb. Life is too short . People are people. Most are good. Some are bad. And there are far too many data points in any relationship to generalize or figure them out. You only hear the bad stuff on the internet. It really can skew your point of view. I take it all with a grain of salt. In Bangkok right now celebrating our 13th wedding anniversary. If you want a nice restaurant to try with Fawn in BKK take her to Char at the Hotel Indigo on Wireless Rd. Great retro rooftop place! I’ll never buy a car here. I think medical insurance in Thailand is expensive. If you do not have medical insurance it can be expensive at an international hospital. I would never go to a government hospital in Thailand. At least in the USA 80% paid for if you have Medicare part A & B. Car insurance is expensive and rental car is expensive. That is why most people drive a motorcycle which can be dangerous on roads and traffic. Thailand is not cheap living on retirement money. If you have a lot of money than you can Live comfortably. If not, it is like living as the poor Thais do without much. Not easy living in Thailand because of language, culture, not having American foods, hot weather, scammers thinking Americans are wealthy, dangerous roads, laws and dealing with retirement visas with Thai immigration. Than you have Thai women wanting everything thinking you have big money. In my opinion America is a lot better for living compared to Thailand. Thailand is a great place to visit but not for living as a foreigner.in my opinion. Been there done that a couple of times. The West is much better for retirement in my opinion.
