What Is Tattoo Machine 'Bog' & Why is it useful?

"Machine bog is when your tattoo machine slows down or bogs when the needles enter the skin. On coil machines the bog actually reduces penetration in to the skin. This bog is a good thing, it is important for a machine to respond to the resistance of the skin." - Bowers Supply
This Vid is from my perspective as a tattooist (and limited understanding of machine building). It's mostly about how it feels better and helps us create solid, long lasting work with less trauma. If you'd like to read a more detailed explanation of why separately tuning the down and up stroke is also a far better idea from an engineering perspective when it comes to delivering ink into the skin with little trauma. Read this great explanation by a machine builder over at Bowers Supply :

fantastic feed Paul. I only started with the flux this year. Id been using coils for 33years but had tried the early swosh drive and inkjecta Nannos. Both didn't work for me. I didn't realise it was the bog. I thought I was just useless. Now im working full time with the flux and find them great apart from black n grey soft shading. Im still struggling there. I have a apprentice. Im teaching her the old way with the coils. hand stencils and history of how we were hand doing everything including making our own needles. I want her to understand and respect the industry before she starts her new career in Tattooing. We never stop learning!

Really cool video! Started with coils, and changed to rotaries because mentor couldn’t teach me anything about coils and it was too much for me to wrap my head around whilst also still learning about everything else. After years of using rotaries I’m transitioning back to coils. Much better for solid packing of black in my personal opinion, better for the skin, pigment heals darker, and clients have a better time, and I feel that the bog/give is the reason why, as it makes me (personally) have better feedback from the skin and everything else that is happening. I also thought I was getting too old to get tattooed, until I realised I simply just hate getting tattooer with rotaries (especially with cartridges, yuk) 😂 recently got some “gnarly” Blackwork over my boobs and nipples and was absolutely chilling. I do love rotaries for fine lining and soft shading or stippling. But at the end of the day how you tattoo dictates what machines you vibe with the most.

The bog and the hit are the two things that would have me switching back for sure. Great comment, thanks for sharing- p

Try the swingliner from Dan Kubin, it’s made to take cartridges, engineered like a coil, with an armature bar

You should get a set of heavy resistance bands and do consistent rehabilitative training for your wrists and hands to strengthen them up... The body is amazing at healing with the right renab!

I still struggle getting single pass lines with a rotary. I've even tried the bishop liner wand and I've always ended up going back to my trusty coil for my linework. I know it's me and not the machine though, there's just something about the way I line that doesn't work very well with a rotary lol.

might be worth trying different carts mate I found this with the first set I got and it put me off till I tired others and seen it wasn't the machine but the carts

I had the same issues at first. Try different carts---bend your needles in the carts to ride more flush and don't be afraid to crank the voltage UP a bit. I ran lines at 10v for a long time until I settled in. I'm a fan of Helios for liners (especially small groupings).

If you know how to build traditional machines and completely understand the anatomy of metals and electricity, you can use try the eagle claw tattoo tube I broke my spine many years ago so I went to rotary 18yrs ago when I had my accident but I love traditional especially the sound and mechanics of it and speed I'm able to work but the lower the amps on them makes them give you more battery life they make them in both needle bar or cartridge and they last around 4 to 6 hrs if your still using rotary I use I phantom by bishop and I'm only using .03 amps on 10volts and it's giving me around 7 :45 just thought I'd let you know seeing you have problems with wrists

what about Dan Kubins machines and systems? they do have a form of rotary mechanical give. have you tried them? also there's Q Luna machines which use magnets to allow a similar feel to coils give system?

I use coil machines with cartridge grips and push bars and it works amazing for me. You just have to tune the machines to compensate for the little bit of extra resistance

I probably need to adjust the lighting a bit to be honest. The booth is a bit a dark for some other content I’m filming that’s why I’m facing away from the madness behind the camera. 👍😂

So I was wrong all my life😅.. I thought BOG is this perfect point in skin. Allowed you line in single pass without ink bleeding out ect.. “give” helps with it and I think is almost unreachable by rotary tattoo machines. Closes one I think was RotaryWorks springer Or dragonfly..

Paul can I ask how did you get your fingers to hold that black ink ?? I’ve done mine twice and they’re still not as black as yours !! I use intenze ….and damn that’s a tiny coil who made it ??

I made ‘gloves’ out of Dermalise and wore them for about a week each time I got my hands tattooed Charlie. It’s a pain but, once they’ve healed, they stay put! From memory, I think the machine in the shot is by a US builder called Dart Vaughn. Shorty coils and a bulldog style frame. Nice little machine tbh 👍

We have been and are working on ink reviews. Although in the current climate it’s going to be a tough one to consider. The unknown of what brand will have the new formula etc. Raw pigment are one to look at.

@@ThatTattooShow that's a fair one pointless doing a show about inks that could very well be banned in the near future (hopefully not with everyone's evidence🤷‍♂️🤞), cheers il have a look into them 👌🙏
@ThatTattooShow
@ThatTattooShow 2 года назад
We will still be testing and reviewing the inks as they come in. But I’m doing a bit more research into them before hand. Like finding out if these company’s are going to be reach compliant etc. It’s kinda counter productive to make a load of videos when the inks may not be here in a years time lol. I do know that 2 company’s are going to have a range of reach compliant colours coming out. So I wouldn’t worry to much. Just fingers crossed the UK doesn’t go the same way as the EU.

The reason why the coil machine can’t push a cartridge is because the membrane has too much tension. With a rotary the plunger bar has no bog or very little resistence because there is no go give. So the membrane in the carts makes a sterile seal, but when you push the needle to the edge of the tube with the carts, the membrane has a good amount of tension, so to push it a little further with a coil machine, the resistence is too much. If the membrane has the cart needle already at the edge of the tube, I feel that the coil will work great. My name is Sam @1850irons #loyaltothecoil
