Black and white houses were one of the more distinct housing forms during Singapore's colonial era. The 19th century invention by British architect Alfred John Bidwell blended European-style houses with features for the local tropical climate, to create a unique housing design.
Its name affectionately refers to the look of the buildings that primarily used dark timber beams and whitewashed walls. Built mainly for the European elite up to the 1920s, black and white houses have since been conserved. Many now serve as homes or adapted into restaurants and shops that bear remnants of colonial living.
