As Singapore's population grew during the colonial era, so did housing types. While most stayed in shophouses and kampongs, the wealthy and influential built grand houses that reflected their lifestyles. The Istana Kampong Gelam was built in the 1840s for the Sultan of Singapore and in the early 20th century, prominent philanthropist Tan Soo Guan built a Victorian-style bungalow at East Coast.
